RINO Alert: Crist to Announce for Senate

2009 May 12
by bc3b

Apparently Florida Gov. Charlie Crist will be announcing plans to run for the Senate today (probably from his buddy Right Wing Yahoo’s front porch).

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist addresses legislators at the end ...

Would you vote for a man with orange skin?

I’ll have to admit, on paper, Christ is a Consevative’s dream candidate.

    From Ballotpedia. com :

Abortion: Is “pro-life and pro-family,” however, he has no plans to change abortion law in the state of Florida, stating in the August 21, 2006 issue of The Tampa Tribune that “I’d rather change people’s hearts than change the law.” However, Crist also said months earlier that he would, if elected governor, sign a ban on abortion similar to the one in South Dakota.
Adoption: Provide a $3000 subsidy to adoptive families. Crist has not yet decided if he would repeal the ban on adoption by same-sex couples.
Death Penalty: Defends the current law allowing non-unanimous juries to recommend the death penalty. He will be reviewing how the penalty is carried out after it took 34 minutes for Ángel Nieves Díaz to die from lethal injection December 13, 2006. “You wonder about the dosage and if there may have been some better medical diagnosis done prior to that” Crist said.
Education: Continue to be an advocate for parent choice in education, including stringent testing and vouchers. Crist encourages standardized testing “to guarantee that each student receives a year’s worth of learning in a year’s worth of time.”
Eminent Domain: Strengthen current legal protections. Crist has stated that he believes the Kelo decision could have negative ramifications for Floridians.
Environment: Supports ban on oil drilling near Florida’s coastline. Continue the net “ban” (limits on allowable size) aimed at protecting aquatic wildlife.
Foster Care: Provide a $5000 subsidy to those providing foster care to families who adopt foster children.
Gay Rights: Crist’s website says Crist strongly supports Florida’s Defense of Marriage Act which is generally opposed by gays and lesbians. Crist’s primary opponent Tom Gallagher claimed Crist supports gay civil unions and Crist was a signatory to the gay marriage amendment petition in Florida.[//citation needed//]
Gun Rights: Balance gun owner rights with private property rights of employers. Crist has been endorsed by the NRA as an “A+” candidate on gun rights. A+ is the highest endorsement given out by the NRA.
Hate Crimes: Stop the “clear pattern of growth” in crimes motivated by sexual orientation.
Health Care: Require prescription drugs to be tracked from the manufacturer to the pharmacy to ensure drug safety. Endorsed by the Florida Medical Association and the Florida Nurses Association.
Homeowners Insurance: Provide affordable reinsurance. Report Card for Insurance Companies. Stop the Cherry Picking by Insurance Companies for the type of coverage they will provide. Abolition of Citizens insurance
Immigration: Support closing borders for illegals and policies that promote legal immigration. Supports Senator Mel Martinez’s immigration bill giving amnesty to illegals.
Legalized Gambling: Oppose any expansion of gambling, but not support the repeal of the Broward County slot machine amendment.
Lawsuit Reform: Support elimination of joint and several liability.
Property Tax: Allow homeowners to move within the same county and between different counties while maintaining their previous property tax level.
Right to Die: Promote the availability of end of life choices, including living wills and coordination with hospice care.

Data from Wiki inidcates (on paper at least) that he’s moved even more to the right.

A RedState diary from last week:

    Crist vs any Conservative

There is probably no greater example of trying to have it both ways than the Governor’s actions during a Special Session held in January of this year to address the State’s budget shortfall. Revenues were not coming in at a rate necessary to meet the budgeted expenditures of this fiscal year so a special session was called. The Governor did not have a clear agenda going into this session – only that the Legislature needed to cut oh – a few billion – from the state budget. It was a gruesome task and the legislature made some gut-wrenching recommendations. There were those who believed the Governor was on board and would sign that budget amendment. Instead, the Governor restored popular spending measures earning praise from various consituencies from around the state and leaving the legislature with mud on their faces.

She links to this NRO article from April 2008 that contains some info on how Charlie likes to play the issues to his political advantage. He is an opportunist.

She also links to this Orlando Sentinel op ed from April of this year:

    Crist, Obama share scary similarities

It gives a take on how Charlie does this. He certainly is like Obama:

Supporters of commuter rail are wondering the same thing about Crist. He supports them in news conferences and in sound bites but jumps off track when it comes to flexing any political muscle to get it done.

School officials know the feeling. Time and again he has promised to protect education funding, and the result always is more budget cuts. His insurance reforms have been a disaster, and his climate-change initiative is technically impossible.

But that scarcely matters. In a world overdosing on information, it’s the first impression that matters.

    Crist lives week to week.

He promises openness, transparency and populism but then hushes up his travels on corporate jets and looks the other way when his lieutenant governor flies around in a state plane for personal use…

Both are paying for today with tomorrow’s money, Crist by raiding trust funds and Obama by printing it up en masse.

Crist will escape the consequences of his actions by running for the U.S. Senate.

Charlie goes with whatever will work for Charlie. He welcomed Obama to Florida re: the stimulus. More political opportunism.

Charlie does not have the best interests of Florida at heart. This is in stark comparison to other governors like Palin and Jindal who actually care about their state.

You think Charlie’s going to start caring for Florida if he manages to get to D.C.? No. He’ll move left as Gore and Clinton did, only he’ll have an R after his name. He’d probably switch to a D, if he thought it would help him.

Someone said (I don’t know if it was RWY or someone else) that Crist uses each office solely as a jumping pad for his next campaign.

I have yet to see any commenter from Florida at the boards I read who supports Crist. Maybe they’ll start now, but from what I’ve seen he’s always been roundly criticized.

Erick Erickson has this up today:

Tax Hiker Runs for Senate in Florida: Charlie Crist Delenda Est

The irony of Charlie Crist’s run is that he is announcing his run today as a Republican and has already committed to raising taxes on working families in Florida. With the GOP’s image already tarnished over its handling of fiscal matters in the past few years, you would think the GOP would be swift to reject someone like Crist. Crist is, after all, the man Barack Obama called his favorite Republican.

    You would be wrong.

In Florida, Crist has spent the past few years inserting moderates into positions of power, including appointing judges who are soft on crime and decidedly left. He has weakened a once invulnerable Republican Party in the name of being liked across party lines.

He and his compatriots are already pushing the idea that Charlie Crist is the only man who can keep Florida’s Senate seat Republican. That is total and utter nonsense. Florida has consistently elected men to the right of Crist and, in fact, when Crist ran for Governor he campaigned much to the right of where he has governed. He has betrayed his base and worked hard to shut the base out of decision making.

    Erick closes by saying this:

We have in Florida, playing out for the United States Senate, the same fight playing out nationally — should the GOP become more like the Democrats or should the GOP be a party dedicated to the right of each person to make himself in the world.

I think Erick’s made an astute observation.

Since I keyed in all of those comments, RedState has yet another post up on Crist.

Charlie Crist Picks A Fight Republicans Don’t Need

Dan McLaughlin picks up where Erick stopped.

    Commence firing! Fire at will!

He has a nice photo up of Obama & Crist. All Marco Rubio needs to do is keep putting that photo out.

    Dan’s main points:

    (1) Crist Is Abandoning His Post.

This is the underreported aspect of what Crist is doing, on the national level – but it’s not going unnoticed in Florida…

[he includes a link to the Miami Herald about the possibility of the R's losing the governorship and problems down-ticket]

The only party leaders who would encourage Republicans to take this course are Barack Obama and Howard Dean.

    (2) Crist Is Throwing His Weight Against A Rising Star

…Rubio is everything older Republicans like Crist should be encouarging: he’s young but already experienced as a leader, he’s telegenic and a good speaker, he’s conservative, and yes, he’s Latino, a demographic that a more inclusive Republican party would be reaching out to, not spurning….

    (3) Crist Is Picking An Ideological Battle

…in this race, it’s the moderate picking a fight to muscle out a conservative in a state where there is no serious question that conservatives have won and can continue to win races statewide…

    (4) Crist Is Leading The Wrong Way

Finally, to be blunt, Crist is wrong on the biggest issue of the day: whether Republicans should oppose President Obama’s plans to massively increase government spending and government control of health care, banking, energy, the auto industry, and indeed virtually every aspect of the U.S. economy. His embrace of the wasteful $787 billion stimulus package is the first step in a political Jim Jones act, by which Republicans abandon the clear distinctions that give voters any reason to choose Republicans over Democrats. It’s one thing for Crist to be a moderate back home in Florida, where he has to work in a coalition with other Republicans, but it’s entirely another to send him to Washington on a platform of joining the Democratic coalition on one issue after another. The party simply can’t survive if it’s identified with Obama’s agenda, and why would such an opposition party appeal to anybody?…

O/T for a minute; I saw this insightful comment at Conservatives4Palin the other day:

Bennett’s comments reflect the dilemma John McCain and the entire Beltway GOP establishment has created for itself. In an attempt to mollify the conservative base out here in flyover country, McCain picked Gov. Palin for the VP slot and the connection was instant. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it.

Now, they’ve got a full-fledged grassroots rebellion on their hands and they don’t have a clue how to deal with it. So they keep dissing Sarah, hoping to separate her from her support.

He was interviewed on FoxNews earlier today and spoke with much conviction about small government, simplified tax codes etc.

Don’t know very much about him yet (perhaps RWY and Inky can fill us in with more detail later), but Floridian Conservatives groups seem to be backing MARCO strongly and these groups are also against Crist’s advocacy of Odumbo’s wasteful trillions that  were lost in faux bail-out programs.

Chekote’s hatred of Sarah Palin is actually therapeutic.

If Chekote is ragging on Sarah (which she hardly ever does/sarc.), it means she’s not b!tching at her husband, cursing at the kids next door, handing out Planned Parenthood business cards to pregnant women at shopping centers, picketing Catholic churches and schools or trying to knock the 85 year old lady down the street off her Hover-round.

Sarah is a loving person with a big heart. As a devout Christian, I’m sure she would be happy to accept the 24/7 hatred knowing that it is serving a greater good. She refers to this as having “a servant’s heart.”

Just reporting what I found. Don’t shoot the messenger.

Ok, we’ll let you live. :D Honestly, there are worse governors than Crist, but his is not as conservative as the tape makes him. He is always taking whatever is the most popular side, and splitting the difference.

Better than a liberal, but like McCain and Specter, you are always waiting for the other shoe to drop.
