The Cost of Freedom

This week the Obama regime, not satisfied with simply reducing OUR ability to defend ourselves, began pressuring Israel to abandon its nuclear weapons.

Assistant Secretary of State Rose Gottemoeller, speaking Tuesday at a U.N. meeting on the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), said Israel should join the treaty, which would require Israel to declare and relinquish its nuclear arsenal.

That innocuous sounding statement represents just the latest ratcheting up of the pressure that has been applied to Israel since day one of The Age of Obama.  Gottemoeller went on to assure Israel that if THEY abandoned their nuclear weapons, then the United States would ensure that Iran also signed the NPT.  Thus the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, with Iran’s signature upon it, would become Israel’s “shield”…and they would no longer need weapons of deterrence (or ultimately of defense of any kind, one supposes).

Gottemoeller was reportedly perplexed at the lack of enthusiasm on Israel’s part to her statement.  The Israelis (correctly) saw this as the biblical equivalent of convincing David to put down HIS rock…

DavidGoliath…on the assurance that Goliath wouldn’t throw rocks either!

Israel developed nuclear weapons back at the start of the 1970s.  Thus for nearly 40 years they have had the ability to destroy their Arab neighbors…but have not done so.  Is there ANY doubt that their “Arab neighbors” would have shown such restraint were the situations reversed?  Absolutely not.  Indeed rarely does a week go by that Goliath Iran doesn’t promise to wipe out David Israel as soon as they have the capability.

And now…

…the Obama regime seeks to replace Israel’s last line of defense, and ultimate deterrence, with a piece of paper!  This is either STAGGERING naiveté or something much darker.

The Cost of Freedom is going up everywhere, and many nations (England, for example) are balking at the price (and so seeking to negotiate a lower ”price” based on less freedom ).  For Israel, the Cost of Freedom and the cost of SURVIVAL are one and the same.

(Mark Steyn, arguably the world’s finest essayist, also wrote on Israel this week.  HatTip: CommentaryMagazine) Israel Today, the West Tomorrow

I vote for something much darker.

This is an incredible development–although not surprising for a WH whose occupant sat under Wright for 20 years. Earlier this week I saw this related article by Melanie Phillips: Obama prepares to throw Israel under the bus

You are right to point out that the cost of freedom is going up everywhere and much of Europe is giving up freedom inch by inch. Steyn’s closing is especially ominous: It may be some consolation to an ever-lonelier Israel that, in one of history’s bleaker jests, in the coming Europe the Europeans will be the new Jews.

I make no apology. I am a Zionist. I have been pro-Israel and a Zionist for as long as I can remember. I don’t even know when it began or why. Maybe it was the Israeli folk song included in our music book in the 3rd grade. Maybe I was left with childhood imprint from newscasts on the Six Day War. Now my support for Israel is entangled in my Christian faith.

To be sure, my support for Judeo-Christian values is reflected in my feminist ideology. I could never support any nation or ideology that treats the female gender as second class citizens at best and sub-human in most instances.

Arab women free yourselves from the oppression of Islam!

Ah yes, welcome back Carter indeed. I can almost see Netanyahu patting this silly woman on the head in reaction to her tragic naivete.

Maybe Netanyahu needs to give Obama a copy of Das Kapital or something…worked for Chavez.

Seriously, how screwed up is this? We treat our enemies better than our allies!

So far, Obama has thumbed his nose at the special relationship with the Brits, pulled the rug out from under our Eastern European allies, and now is sticking it to the Israelis.

He has done NOTHING to aid Pakistan- an increasingly bad situation with potential nuclear reprecussions, his Afganistan policy is more bluster than action, and I afraid he will successfully snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in Iraq.

Obama’s “new” Diplomacy seems to be built around becoming pen pals with Achmedinejad, and starting a book club with Chavez.

It is a sad state of affairs when the French even think our president is a wussie.

From Pamela Geller at Atlas Shrugs, Geert Wilders’ remarks at the Free Speech Summit:

Ladies and Gentlemen, still Islam is not our No. 1 problem, our No. 1 problem is called ‘Cultural Relativism’, the Elites that rule our countries have converted us to this sick philosophy a long time ago. Government leaders, Judges, even Churches, Trade Unions, Universities, the Media, all of them are blinded by political correctness and have chosen the side of Islam. They feel sorry for Muslims and pity them. ‘Cultural Relativism’ is weakening the West day by day. As a result of this ‘Cultural Relativism’ a little bit of the Free West dies everyday. Many Politicians, seem to believe, unfortunately, that their job is not to defend democracy but to help to make the transition to Sharia as smooth as possible.

While I was at Atlas Shrugs, I also saw this, which is slightly O/T, but relevant:

Man Detained for Displaying “Don’t Tread on Me” Bumper Sticker

She picked it up from another blog. This happened in a small Louisiana town. A guy was detained at the roadside while police did a background check to make sure he wasn’t an “extremist”. Does this mean anyone with a Gadsden flag will be investigated?

MFG, have you heard about this on the news?

    From Gateway Pundit:

Queen’s Medal of Honor Scrapped… It’s Too Offensive to Muslims & Hindus

A medal established by the Queen is being withdrawn after it was declared unlawful and offensive to Muslims and Hindus…

Now other honours are being reviewed over their references to Christian Saints or symbols.

England balks at the cost of freedom for symbols of its religious and historical heritage. Will it ever draw a line in the sand?

INC, another “WOW!” story out of the British Isles.

Dammit…they’re not even TRYING to fight back!

Once upon a time the “sun never set” upon the British Empire. Now the sun is about to set on Britain herself. A once proud people…now they surrender BEFORE the battle!

Yes, I checked in with GP and there it was. Their leaders are giving into and celebrating multi-culti and it is destroying them from within.

“… Gottemoeller went on to assure Israel that if THEY abandoned their nuclear weapons, then the United States would ensure that Iran also signed the NPT. …”

Israel ought to take up the challenge, with a wink and a nod with the opening line — “By all means, AFTER you!”. Referring of course to Iran. But it would of course put Obammy on the hot seat. He would not be able to deliver Iran on that promise and they would be off the hook. Then an Obammy would look like a fool yet again.

Besides Israel has always denied having nukes. They still could even if Obammy delivered. (he won’t).
