Breaking News: Cap and Trade Bill Delayed in Senate Until September!

2009 July 9
by INC

As I was working on several posts regarding “Cap and Tax”, I went to Hot Air and saw this from the Washington Post:

President Barack Obama’s push for quick action by Congress on climate change legislation suffered a setback on Thursday when the U.S. Senate committee leading the drive delayed work on the bill until September…

Senate Democratic leaders’ quick timetable for writing a bill has run into two complications: the competing priority of passing healthcare legislation and dissension in Democratic ranks over the climate bill.

I will be putting up more posts on this with Committee members names.

UPDATE: Ed Morrissey also links to two article outlining Senator Byrd’s opposition to the Cap and Trade, here and here.  He hasn’t forgotten he’s from the coal state of West Virginia!

The first article has this reminder:

…Senator Byrd’s was one of the two sponsors of the Byrd-Hagel Resolution, which the senate unanimously passed, 95–0, in 1997. Byrd-Hagel stated the sense of the Senate that the United States should not be a signatory to any protocol that did not include binding targets and timetables for developing nations as well as industrialized nations or “would result in serious harm to the economy of the United States.”

That’s good news. Sarah will be out of office for over a month and in good form by September, not that she would say anything.

Perry leads Hutchison by 12 points. Kay was ahead several months ago.

Perry is making a big deal of Palin’s endorsement and announced yesterday that she will be in Texas campaigning for him. It’s VERY personal between Sarah and Kay Barely Republican.

Timely two threads you posted, INC, back to back.

While I am happy about the delay, the nagging side of my mind is concerned that this will just give the dims more time to put their global-warming ducks in a row. Hopefully, we do the same.

Regarding health care passage….I do think this is the push, as peoples’ concerns over Obamacare are escalating, and I think he feels it is a now-or-never moment.

Just heard a news spot quoting Pelosi as saying she would try to have a Health Care Bill ready in the House for passage before the August summer break. Yikes! Another hurry-up-and-vote scenario!

I think it is vital to contact state representatives on this Health care bill, voicing a rejection of it and the public option they are pushing. There are also various petitions on line where people can sign-on. I never know how effective these petitions are. But, everything and anything is worth a try.

Jan, Teague from NM got an earful for his vote in the House on Cap and Tax. There was a meeting back home at which people were really steamed.

I’ve got to run and don’t have time to find the link. But if that’s typical, I think this spells doom for the bill.

You’re right about Pelosi trying to push health care through. It is something else to call and write to your Rep about.

Count me in the prayer chain asking that Sen Byrd’s health holds out- he’s looking pretty rough.

Well the good thing is we have a recess between now and when Boxers committee gets back to ‘bizness’. If enough people get those on the committee the ‘Cornyn Treatment’ like he got in Austin then a lot of the members will be having second thoughts when they get back.

The country can breathe easier as long as Byrd keeps breathing. Governor Manchin, assuming he appoints in the case of an untimely event, was raised in a coal mining community, and his wife is from Beckley, another coal mining area.

Coal = clean coal energy through technology = good for America = bad for Waxman.

Here’s AMA’s stance on the Health Care bill (tongue in cheek) –

THE AMA WEIGHS IN ON THE “proposed” HEALTH CARE REFORM MEASURE

The Allergists voted to scratch it, but the Dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves. The Gastrologists (sp) had sort of a gut feeling about it, but the Neurologists thought the Administration had a lot of nerve. The Obstetricians felt they were all laboring under a misconception. Ophthalmologists considered the idea shortsighted.

Pathologists yelled, “Over my dead body!² while the Pediatricians said, ‘Oh, Grow up!’ The Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, while the Radiologists could see right through it. Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing.
The Internists thought it was a bitter pill to swallow, and the Plastic Surgeons said, “This puts a whole new face on the matter.”

The Podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but the Urologists were pissed off at the whole idea. The Anesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas, and the Cardiologists didn’t have the heart to say no.

In the end, the Proctologists won out, leaving the entire decision up to the assholes in Washington, D.C.

Clearly they don’t have the votes

I’ve been emailing Mary Landrieu every day, basically saying that whatever the science is, China and India clearly are not going to cooperate, thus we are essentially just exporting jobs to these countries

Seems like a good argument to make with a Democommie…

Hmmm, no C&T until September, but the Senate doesn’t seem to be doing anything else at the moment. Why, I thought they were eleceted to get something done.

Seems like we’ve go a do nothing congress. Time for a pay raise, I guess.

I can’t see Zero winning back any voters that he loses either. Once scales drop from your eyes they don’t grow back.

Down to near 50/50 six months into your term, even with the fullthroated media lovefest and control of congress?

    This guy is going down.

2012 could be a gimme. We should nominate the most conservative possible Republican. get some stuff done.

If the blinders come off the media love machine, I will agree on 2012- that is still worth 15 to 20 points at the very least for the 0.

I will support Mitt or Palin, perhaps Fred if wants to make another go… Haley Barbour is also good people.

Not too many of the others I am giving much consideration to. Newt buys into the Global warming BS, and Huckabee is all about government “Helping the little guy”, like a Euro Christian Socialist. I am sick of that crap- Government needs to get out of the way so we can help ourselves.

First thing is not to push somebody into running who doesn’t want it. I don’t think Fred really wanted it, so I will wait and see what he does.

Regarding Mitt, I will have to wait and see how much the msm is willing to push him. If they do, they must have a reason.

I truly believe a sizeable portion of the newsmedia world will start to turn before it is all said and done. Sure, the majority will be lefty apologists to the end, but at some point a substantial part of the media will HAVE to start calling this train wreck, a,well, train wreck. It is about dollars and cents- people gravitate to the news sources that lie to them the least.

This actually sucks in a way.. the back to back health care\cap&tax would have helped public perception in our favor and in combo could really help solidify those unfavorable numbers.

    “should I laugh or cry?”

    Both.

    Good news, for the moment…

The following must be defeated if America is to remain a free, constitutional republic:

    1 Socialist health care
    2 Amnesty
    3 Cap and trade.

If all those are defeated, we move to the second round:

    4 Card check
    5 Fairness Doctrine
    6 Gun control

In addition to the ongoing struggle for personal property rights.

Any one of these is a fatal wound to our liberty, so we have a long way to go. To say nothing of the fact that some in the R party want these same things.

    INC,

Same thing being reported over at HotAir too.

I would pop some champagne if both the energy and health care bills died. Obammy can’t get his legislative agenda thru. If the Congress Critters don’t have the guts to pass it now, they will have even less visceral fortitude once the electorate get hold of them at recess. Their last gasp is the Aug-Sept period. After that they are toast. Nor will the Congress take it back up in January. Elections coming up, don’t want those anchors around their necks.

Has there ever been a President whose last 3 years in office were lame duck?

TigerHawk comments on the delay in cap and trade and the stalling of health care:

There seems to be a noticeable loss of legislative momentum today.

A lot of things coming together: Teague has gotten an earful from NM on his cap and tax vote, Nye’s hypocrisy was shown up, Byrd is rebelling, Obama’s numbers are tanking.

Some of these guys are getting nervous.
