Buck Up: The 30th Anniversary of Malaise!

2009 July 15

Today in History! July 15, 2009: Buck Up!

30 years ago in History! July 15, 1979: Crisis of Confidence!

At Hot Air,  Ed Morrissey had Obama’s speech via Greg Hengler at TownHall.  The Carter speech was via Hot Air from the Politico article, Jimmy Carter’s ‘Malaise’ speech wears well.  When I saw that title at Politico I thought, now that is historical revisionism on a mind-boggling scale!  What goes on here? Does this have anything to do with Obama pushing health care with his “Buck Up” speech today!?!  I noticed this buried on page two of the Politico article on Carter:

Julian Zelizer, a professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University, notes that these same tendencies are at the heart of many of our problems today — “not just energy, but if you look at something like the mortgage crisis, as well, at the heart of it is our consumer patterns, our thirst for consumer goods, our inability to think through what we purchase, and our tendency to judge our value by what we own,” he says.

He’s practically quoting Jimmy Carter as he lectures the U.S. citizen! Yes, I’d definitely say they’re rehabilitating Carter to try to prop up Obama.  They’re trying to use him to make Obama look good!  That’s how bad things are! But, I’d say, it’s definitely not Smart Power to give that kind of speech on this anniversary!!

Remember this, however, trying to push Carter’s “Malaise” speech as a good thing is a definite sign that roadblocks are being hit in the Obama agenda steamroll!
__________

H/T: Hot Air, Town Hall, Politico

P.S. In case you don’t already know this interesting bit of political history, the Malaise speech was written by Chris Matthews.

I would caution commenters to refrain from making the obvious comments/euphemisms/acronyms regarding the outdated and hackneyed phrase used by Obama in his speech!

Using that phrase was definitely not a sign of Smart Power from the White House speech writer!

This article is from George Mason University’s History News Network. I’m putting it in the comments so the post won’t be too long. I wanted to include it, because there really is no rehabilitating Jimmy Carter!

    It was posted last year:

The outlines of Carter’s speech took shape during a bizarre domestic summit at Camp David, where Carter received hundreds of visitors…During those ten days, numerous dissenting voices emerged within Carter’s own cabinet. The vice president, Walter Mondale, nearly resigned in protest against Carter’s apparent belief that Americans were primarily to blame for their own predicament; Mondale and others insisted that the country faced objective, structural problems that public officials could and should address pragmatically…

…Carter, a horrific public speaker to begin with, delivered a monotonous and halting half-hour sermon that included nearly five full minutes of criticism, encouragement and commentary from ordinary Americans with whom he had conversed during the previous week.

What followed was an unprecedented presidential jeremiad against affluence….

Inasmuch as these observations might have been true, Carter’s speech was loaded down with a the sort of self-righteous moralizing that had often irked many Americans who might have been inclined to agree with him. Moreover, the national scolding did nothing to address — or even extend legitimacy to — the immediate and quite real economic perils…

Let me see if I understand what’s going on. Obama ——- up, now we gotta buck up?

Also, Obama is in his seventh month as POTUS. I don’t think there has been a single day when he hasn’t been on television. I’m talking front and center, making some kind of statement.

Well, Tony, that’s what narcissists do, you know. I don’t think he realizes it’s wearing thin. He probably still thinks if he talks long enough or often enough, he can overcome all obstacles.

One can only hope that the malaise obomba is referring to is ultimately his own; i.e projection – hopefully because his two pet projects are floundering: cap, tax & trade and hell(th) care.

Obama’s malaise this is early means good news for the country.

    at least I hope so…

I picked this up at HHR, but it fits nicely here. Link

“The first Congressional Democrat (to my knowledge) is now on the record declaring Barack Obama a political liability.”

durman, I wasn’t clear in the post. Carter’s speech in which he lectured Americans became famously known as the Malaise speech. IMO, it came to symbolize everything that was wrong with the Carter years. I meant to say that pushing the Malaise speech as something that was good and wore well is really an indication that Obama & the Dems know many, many people don’t like their agenda. I think they’re hoping that by saying Carter was right 30 years ago, that people will think that Obama is doing the right thing now.

I added a few words to make it clearer.

Tony, it says Boren is from OK. His words are good and he’s trying to keep his constituents happy, but I did notice it says he voted for Obama bills 81% of the time. He should be nervous that they might notice the discrepancy!

    Obama’s right…

he IS gonna “**** UP our Healthcare”!

p.s. I “loved” the assertion that “the American people are behind it”. Um, no…they’re not! Rasmussen today showed a plurality OPPOSED to it!

Thanks for the reminder on the Rasmussen poll, Justrand.

Forty-nine percent (49%) of U.S. voters now at least somewhat oppose the health care reform plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats, while 46% at least somewhat favor it, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

Just two weeks ago, 50% were for the reform plan, and 45% were opposed.

The “nays” also continue to have the edge in terms of intensity. While 22% strongly favor the Democrats’ health care reform plan, 38% strongly oppose it, up four points from the previous survey.

Tony, I thought it was interesting that Hot Air noticed a WaPo editorial on this:

I had no idea the Malaise Speech was written by Chris “Tingle” Matthews. Thanks for the “trivia” piece, INC.

I didn’t hear Obama’s speech, but am reading comments like yours about it. I find hearing Obama’s voice, the staccato-like cadence of his speech patterns, makes the scraping of fingernails on a blackboard sound good.

He is beyond the pale so early in the term of his presidency. I have not a clue how to get through the next 3+ years sometimes!

I also think as Rasmussen is showing, the support for obamacare is continuously slipping south for the dims.

This trend, plus the anticipation of newer reports coming out about the state of the economy in August have the dims on high speed to get health care through.

When the people begin to peel away their blinders and see how badly damaged the economy really is, they will feel far less inclined to put even more of a financial burden on this country through the passage of an enormously expensive health care plan and cap and trade bill.

We may get it shoved down our throat Tiananmen square style, but the pot is boiling and I think there will be blood in the streets if Hector Obama gets his way on this, global warming caca, and amnesty. Some of us still link to freedom.

I made the mistake of watching BOR tonight. I think he has me by 5 inches or so and a bigger reach and a few years younger, still I would like to fight him to the death when he does his global warming shtick. Al Gore at least knows he is a lying elitist, O’reilly is just stupid!!

RWY, thanks. The Carter rehab push was incomprehensibly weird to see. When the media does something that strange it always makes me wonder why. Obama was my best guess (not too big a leap!). That quote by the Princeton prof lecturing Americans was just surrealistic and lined up with my thoughts.

I do think people are waking up. The polls show it. As Justrand said, it’s going be a race to see if enough outrage breaks through and stops the Dems.

Bruce, BOR has got to start reading a few things. I found some new links I put up in the comments in the Palin Cap and Trade thread below about more problems with “global warming”.

I always wonder who does research? Anyone? I will be glad to do it!

INC – The politicians may be ahead of the curve on this one. Politicians always worry about the next election and how they are perceived. The Democrats know it is going south on them or will be soon given the trends. The question they should be asking (if they already are not) how is the people back home seeing this?

If these politicians think or believe the people are turning, they will want to get off of this train before it wrecks. Thus they will be able to say that they disagreed with this President. Yes, they were for hope and change but not this kind of hope and change. How many Americans, like in 1976 wanted change/reform but got this piece of crap. Thus a smart politician (those in the swing districts) will br looking at getting ahead of this before it even jumps the tracks.
