Obama: Wrong on Honduras

2009 July 5
by bc3b

It took the Obama administration less than eight hours to side with Cuba’s Fidel Castro, Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and Nicaragua’s Daniel Ortega over the ouster of Manuel Zelaya in Honduras.

As we have come to expect, Mr. Obama got it wrong again, but this time, nobody noticed. The U.S. news media, preoccupied with the sudden demise of Michael Jackson, ignored the event in Central America.

Here’s the analysis.

The government has said it will not permit Zelaya’s plane to land and the Catholic Archbishop has asked him to stay away to avoid bloodshed.

Mike gamecock DeVine had a terrific diary at RedState about Obama and Honduras.

He asked: Is this the lowest day in the history of the United States’ presidency?

I have to say, yes. Never thought I’d see an American President side with three thugs against freedom and against the rule of law.

Mike also has some interesting compare and contrast about the principle of rule of law. He uses this definition of coup d’etat:

    Merriam-Webster defines a coup d’etat as:

a sudden decisive exercise of force in politics ; especially : the violent overthrow or alteration of an existing government by a small group

He then has bullet points to logically build his case that it was not a coup.

    Constitution limits Presidential terms

President plays no role in enactment of Constitutional Amendments

President acts outside his Constitutional Authority

Supreme Court declares President’s actions unconstitutional

    President defies Court Order

Military detains President as he leads an illegal mob intent on its own coup d’etat

President arrested for criminal acts but is mercifully allowed exile rather than prosecution

    Not a coup

He then goes on to say a few things about Obama’s subversion of rule of law here.

Shall we return to the definition of coup d’etats as we analyze how Obama became CEO of Chrysler, General Motors and large segments if the banking industry?

…In effect, a small group (Obama/Geithner/Bernanke) overthrew and/or altered existing corporate governance under the Rule of Law via the sudden and decisive force of the Executive Branch of the Government of the United States.

Would that President Obama would eschew constructive coups in the America; denounce them among the Axis of Evil; and quit imagining them where they haven’t occurred in Central America.

I forgot to mention that he expands on each bullet point. I just wanted to list them so you get the gist of what he said.

One of the commenters there said:

Clear, to the point and powerful. The Obamassiah is not comfortable with Americans watching a President, who has overstepped his constitutional authority, removed forcefully from power. Who might get ideas? Who might be next? Thanks for the great work!

That comment reflected some of my own thoughts when i first heard of Obama’s reaction to Honduras.

Nice rundown of events and correct definition of terms, as usual, INC!

When I read the various news clips on Honduras it seems as if the powers that be are trying to fabricate reality, making this constitutional transition into power as something that is violent and abnormal.

Just the OAS convening for an emergency meeting and ousting Honduras as a member is absolutely mind-boggling! The more that Obama and others interfere the more that they are turning Zelaya from being the want-to-be dictator that he is, into some kind of sainted martyr!

Pinch me! What is happening in this world of ours?

Good rundown on the situation. I have a friend who is leaving for his annual Honduran sabbatical July 8th. He is apolitical in many respects but he is thrilled that they have removed this guy and cannot believe our Chairman is siding with Chavez. He thinks the country is at least 80% behind the new government.

Obama just confirms what we all think of him with his siding with the banana republic leaders. No surprise there. What a pig he is.

Related to this, because it’s on Iran–a situation in which Obama has also revealed himself. (BTW, how providential for those two contrasting situation to come up. It’s more revealing of Obama than if they had been similar! Obama reacted against freedom both times, and the fact they were contrasting only serves to highlight Obama’s attitude toward liberty and government by the people.).

On Iran, Pamela Geller has a photo up of Neda Soltani wearing a cross necklace.

In the media’s ongoing campaign to institute the agenda of the Organization of the Islamic Conference and advance Islam, it has been previously withheld from the public that Neda Soltani was a Christian.

In the oft-reproduced picture run across world media, her cross is cropped out. What deceit.

That Neda was a Christian is ample proof that everyone in Iran who took to the streets was marching for liberty and one man one vote. How vile to imply that millions marched for the inside politicking of Islamic cleric rule. Her religion flies in the face of every cold blooded pundit who has attempted to dismiss this historic movement as simply more sharia in shades of green.

A Dictator is still a dictator, even if he gets himself popularly elected. Zemalaya is trying to follow the same route Chavez did, subverting the constitution, etc. It is also troubling that he allegedly has ties to the Drug lords.

To support Zemalaya is to take the view that democracy really IS two wolves and a chicken voting on what’s for dinner, and that the rule of law is subject to the whims of the mob.

Is anyone ever shocked anymore at the decisions this Administration makes? This is a disgrace, a disaster, and a travesty. We are 6 months into this debacle- where will we be in 2010? Or for a more frightening thought- where will we be in 2012?

I expected the worst, but this is behind belief. The mess Obama is creating will destroy the country faster than I dreamed possible. And, we have been helpless, with no oposition. My hope is that Sarah Palin realized that she is one of the few people the opposition will unite behind and that was part of her reasoning.

I have a new blog for you. A commenter at HA linked to this:

Honduras Abandoned, done by Hunter Smith.

William A. Jacobson of Le·gal In·sur·rec·tion says that

Hunter recently completed his service in the Marines, and decided to hop a flight to Honduras to see first hand what was going on. His blog is Honduras Abandoned.

Right now, Hunter is in the crowd approaching the airport for the possible return of Manuel Zelaya. [Minutes ago it hit the wires that Zelaya's plane was not allowed to land.]

    New update from Honduras Abandoned:

Just got off phone from Hunter. He was in a building at the airport with other Press types. They heard Mel was arriving. Commotion started outside and they were told to get to other end of airport. They went running outside and saw people running towards an area. He went there just as an ambulance was pulling out. Saw very large pool of blood. Told 2 to 3 dead.

Person there told him that rocks had been thrown at soldiers and one (soldier/police)walked up to the fence and started shooting. People were showing Hunter the brass and it appeared to be 5.56. He did not see any on the ground and does not know if this was from the shooter. Said everyone was scrambling around trying to find some.

Protest organizers are trying to send people home. They do not want any more blood shed. Crowd has calmed down but it was very tense when Hunter first arrived. police/army had pulled back from fence. Few people are leaving and he said the crowd is a lot better now. He got pictures of the blood. He did not hear the shots personally.

He did see an older man in a white shirt reach down into the blood pool and cover his hands. He then wiped them on his shirt to make it look like his blood or that he had been involved. Hunter saw what he thought was an AP photographer take the man’s picture. Hunter said if you see it on the web, don’t believe it. It was faked.

He is heading back into the crowd and will update if anything warrants further coverage. Plans on posting pics and his write up when he gets back to hotel. It will be better than mine. Doing this from hastily scratched notes while confirming his safety.

As far as I can tell at the moment there’s some confusion as to when Zelaya’ plane actually left. Jacobson’s link in his quote above is to the WSJ that says,

Honduras’ civil aviation director said Mr. Zelaya’s plane was being redirected to El Salvador.

The chronology of events is hard to follow. We’ll see what gets sorted out.

A commenter at HA who speaks Spanish has translating (I think from Chavez’ Telesur live video). The commenter said that the plane was buzzing the airport and the runway was blocked with trucks and choppers. This is from several comments.

Zelaya says that he can’t land because of the blocked runways across the country. He is looking for other alternatives maybe coming in to land on other occasion or looking for another way to come into Hoduras. He is asking the international community to overturn this illegal coup. Asking Obama for help. Asking Obama to intervene on his behalf.

Zelaya still speaking from the plane…to telesur.

Zelaya says he is going to leave and consult on “further steps” with his brother “Central American Presidents”

talks about injustice of what’a happening. He says Tegucigalpa tower told him to leave Honduran airspace or risk getting shot down.

    he got cut off.

    Chavez talking now..

Venezulan plane is of the Bolivarian Allaince “ALBA” calls the threat to shoot down plane a “provocation”

Says Fidel, Ortega, Zelaya, and him are in real time contact on what to do next.

Says Venezuelan Air Force fooled Honduran military.

Zelaya snuck in from southern approach.

Says Chavez and He agree that entire “security” of Central America is in jeopardy due to these acts.

Says the “people’s reforms are in danger…talks about the right and the fascists.

Says that Obama is on his side and he will soon face problems with the “right in his country like in Honduras…

Calls the “right” reactionary and the enemy says they often find comfort from the military and humanity must rise up against the “right”

    calls for new social order

    new economic order.

says that what has happened to him in Honduras can happen to “any Nation”

No doubt that “zero” admires and wants to be a thug and has no idea what he is doing.

Though Zelaya can not run, this does not mean that he wants to come back and take charge. The best way to prevent this is to stop his breathing. As long as he is a live, he poses a risk. Much like Ortega in Nicaruaga (who should have had a terminal case of lead poisoning).

  39. 2009 July 5 5:34 pm
    [39]

    “who succeeds him?”

Basically there speaker of the house… it already happened and was voted on by the full congress hours after he was removed. This issue was settled properly with-in hours of it going down, all according to their constitution and in full consultation of there congress and courts. Yes the current acting president is filling out the rest of the term (5-6 months), he has expressed potential interest in speeding up the next election to have it a couple months earlier such as in the fall. (personally I don’t really see the need – I think it’s just an offering to the ‘international community’ to have them back off)

  40. 2009 July 5 5:36 pm

If he returns he must and will be prosecuted, while they did need him gone for a day or two to complete transitions in my view they were actually doing him favor in re-locating him – giving him the option to avoid prosecution. When you warned from your congress that your violating your constitution, then warned again from your AG, and from your military leaders, then dismiss your military heads which are re-appointed by your scoh who then warns you again not to move forward with the sham unauthorized vote, and then are forcibly removed from office by your military under orders from scoh for all these violatioins… you really shouldn’t be out there in the world talking about how your a victim of a coup. Boggles the mind. Was hilarious to hear Hillary the other day pressed about if it was a coup… she was like “well legally speaking we’ve not made that determination at this point”… cut to obama and hour later “coup, coup, coup”

Hunter Smith has another update. It looks like excellent coverage of the event.

Here’s a mention of Code Pink again:

There were rumors floating around that Mel Zelaya was soon to be landing at the airport, so I raced inside with the rest of the press, hoping to get to a position where I could get some good coverage. Amongst the press in the airport was a representative from Code Pink who was there to protest the “military coup” in Honduras. Not wanting to be around her, I decided to leave the inside of the airport and cover what was happening in the streets.

It looks as if things were tense, but not violent until the crowd started throwing rocks. Then some of the military fired in the air and some at the crowd according to a guy that Hunter talked with. Hunter does not vouch for the witness and Hunter was not at that end of the crowd.

this is staged outrage…with a willing Press. I LOVED the “bandaid” photo!!

ANY other U.S. President, even Carter and Clinton, would have at least tried to support Democracy.

Obama wants his stooge in there…then when the stooge is reinstated Obama will say “we can’t meddle”
