Ronald Reagan Speaks Out Against Socialized Medicine

2009 July 20

This recording made by Reagan was distributed by the AMA across the country in 1961 to their Woman’s Auxiliary in the Operation Coffee Cup campaign.   It has been making the rounds of the internet, and I found it at Hot Air this past Saturday.  Wikipedia has a link to TexasBestGrok who posted photos and information he found in the album that was sent to his grandmother.  He’s also put the record into mp3 format at his blog.

Reagan closed by saying this:

And if you don’t do this and if I don’t do it, one of these days you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children, what it once was like in America when men were free.

Through his words, President Reagan still speaks out for us and for the country he loved.

During the Vice-Presidential debate last fall, as she quoted Reagan, Sarah Palin paraphrased his closing statement from this recording.

Paul Krugman noticed Palin’s quote and scoffed at her while not missing the chance to take a shot at Reagan in the New York Times last fall.

Doctors’ wives were supposed to organize coffee klatches for patients, where they would play the Reagan recording, which declared that Medicare would lead us to totalitarianism.

You couldn’t make this stuff up.

There’s no need to make anything up. It happens to be true.

yesterday the A/P snuck a line their supposed “news” story about ObamaCare that said:
“The United States is the only developed country without a National Healthplan”.

    They don’t count:
    - Medicare
    - MedicAid
    - national laws making it ILLEGAL to deny service to anyone
    - etc…..

But Reagan’s words ARE coming to pass!!!

thx for reminding us, INC! :)

Latest Rasmussen Poll shows a steady -7 Presidential Approval Index for Obama.

Another statistic, more interesting than holding any validity, is a trial balloon for the 2012 presidential elections pitting Obama against Romney (a tie at 45%), and Palin (Obama 48% and Palin 42%).

    You’re welcome.

Ed Morrissey has this up today:

    Faster Please!!!

At first, other pollsters didn’t catch the trend, but now almost all surveys show Americans losing confidence in the administration’s efforts on fiscal matters. Now the bleeding also has begun on health care, as the new Washington Post poll shows:

Heading into a critical period in the debate over health-care reform, public approval of President Obama’s stewardship on the issue has dropped below the 50 percent threshold for the first time, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

    Ed also points out:

Bear in mind that this poll has a rather odd partisan split. Unlike the CBS poll, which got deliberately tweaked to emphasize Democrats, this poll appears to have a natural sample that overemphasizes independents. According to the raw data, the poll only has 22% Republicans, 33% Democrats, and 41% independents. In that case, Republicans are significantly undersampled, and Democrats slightly undersampled.

Good thread INC, including your Washington Post Poll post.

Obama seems to be parting the wrong waters these days, and it may be catching up with him.

When you look at the wrongheaded fiscal policies he continues to push, followed by his forays into international waters (Iran, Honduras, and now Israel over what they may or may not build in Jerusalem)it’s like he can’t seem to get anything right.

It almost seems like a personality problem with him — not knowing when to step back or step down from an unpopular, inappropriate stance.

He’s an out and out Leftist and the U.S. is not. He’s trying to strong arm us into what he wants. I also think he’s a real narcissist. His way is the only way because his agenda is tightly wound into his sense of self. He has to keep pushing things because to do otherwise would be to admit his entire self is flawed. That’s my armchair analysis!

This is why Obama was pushing to get his health care plan through before the summer recess.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The White House is being forced to acknowledge the wide gap between its once-upbeat predictions about the economy and today’s bleak landscape.

The administration’s annual midsummer budget update is sure to show higher deficits and unemployment and slower growth than projected in President Barack Obama’s budget in February and update in May, and that could complicate his efforts to get his signature health care and global-warming proposals through Congress.

The release of the update – usually scheduled for mid-July – has been put off until the middle of next month, giving rise to speculation the White House is delaying the bad news at least until Congress leaves town on its August 7 summer recess.

White House putting off release of budget update

If the news of the real state of the economy had broken sooner it would have negatively impacted Obamacare even more. What a conniving president we have at the helm of power.

It will be interesting to see the dance of the marxist adminstration and the state-run media as sober reality continues to set in and the window closes.

It will be like watching two porcupines trying to mate.

PG — I saw those headlines on Drudge, first thing this morning. And, as usual, find myself in disbelief at how the govt. abuses and misuses other people’s money!

Another good article looking at Obama’s shortcomings:

Behind Obama’s failure is a blind spot when it comes to understanding that people respond to incentives and disincentives. Funneling money through the federal government has no multiplier effect and does not give businesses incentives to expand and hire more people. Nor does sweet talking dictators give them any incentive to change their behavior.

    Obama’s policies are failing

I like the use of “blind spot” when referring to Obama’s vision.

Jan, conniving is too mild a word.

Erick Erickson at RedState has a post up:

Let’s use this week to gather opposition to healthcare

It’s time to get our members of Congress on the record. There are four key questions we need to ask this week. We’ll take the data, compile it, and next week have a more accurate list of targets to build our opposition to healthcare.

Go here now. Call your member of Congress and two Senators. Ask them these questions:

    1. Barack Obama said Friday that his healthcare plan will not increase the deficit. If the plan does increase the deficit, will you oppose it?
    2. Will you oppose a plan that includes a public option?
    3. Will you oppose a plan that includes a trigger for a public option?
    4. Will you oppose provisions paying for taxpayer funded abortions?

Use the form and email me back the answers. I’ll get the answers compiled and we’ll have a better list of targets to go after next week based on how they stand on these issues.

We can defeat Obamacare. But we need to do some work.

    I’d add some others:

    5. Will you read the bill before voting on it?

    6. The House Ways and Means Committee voted down the Heller amendment to prevent illegal aliens from receiving government-subsidized health care. Do you support illegal aliens receiving government-subsidized health care?

    7. Will you vote against the bill without an amendment clearly preventing illegal aliens from receiving government-subsidized health care?

    8. Will you wait until the administration’s annual midsummer budget update is released before voting on healthcare?

Jan, I’ve mentioned before that a year ago I did some reading about narcissism in order to try to understand someone with whom I thankfully no longer have to interact.

The application to Obama is easy to make. I’ve also seen it done by a couple of psychologists on the web. I think Dr. Sanity is one of them.

“Dr Sanity,”…I just love your sources, INC.

But, yes, I agree with you on the diagnosis of narcissism and how it befits out leader. Although, a touch of narcissism is a common trait among people in the limelight. In Obama’s case, though, he seems to be ruled by it, as he shuts out a commoner called, “common sense.”

Another thought —> Just like the MSM made him, I think it will also be the cause of his demise.

All I am hearing and reading is “negative” Obama news — how his humbers are slipping, with a listing of all the areas of disagreement between him and John Q Public.

People, aka sheeple, form their ideas/impressions by what the MSM says. So, ideas will take root from these MSM seeds of discontent, and voila, you will soon have an Obama Stink Plant!

Please note–all members of Congress and White House staff, and their families, are completely exempt from socialized medicine. That is specifically written into the hellcare bill.

This is precisely the same as state-run education, where the self-anointed liberal elites can opt out. And we will get precisely the same results–only this time it will be much worse since it is your health and your life.

There is so much irony here–the exact people who voted for the marxist (the elderly, the poor and disabled, middle-class soccer moms) are going to be the ones getting screwed.

Let’s state it plainly–the marxist and his merry men will determine if elderly or disabled individuals will be able to receive the health care they need. If you know anything about abortion, you know how that is going to turn out.

I hope people are waking up right now, before it is too late.

Note that Rush said today that all this talk about Blue Dog Dems blocking the bill and saving the day is so much bull, and it probably planted propaganda. Rahm’s thumbbreakers will get all the Dems in line; only those not needed will be allowed to symbolically vote against to ‘maintain political viability’ as Bubba used to say.

The Senate may be another story, but it is primarily we as the American people that have to do this by applying unbearable pressure on Congress. Otherwise it really is all over.

    Indeed, PG…indeed!

My crystal ball is in the shop (again!), but this is an EASY prediction:

If we DO manage to forestall (i.e. kill) the ObamaCare plan until after the August recess, look for the Dems to trot out how the EVIL Republicans don’t WANT you to be healthy!!

the Dems will turn their defeat into a slap at all of us.

    Guaranteed!

Section 1233 of H.R. 3200 “Advanced Care Planning Consultation” -
requires senior citizens to meet at least every 5 years with a doctor or nurse practitioner to discuss dying with dignity.

I just read the whole section…it is mind numbing in its legalese…but that is EXACTLY what it requires!

    Scared yet?? If not…why not?

    Justrand,

A diary at RedState “Number 9, Number 9” mentions that Rahm’s brother, Dr. Ezekiel Emmanuel, had input on this bill.

The good doctor believes in cutting medical research, rationing healthcare, and euthanasia. I think you can guess why congress doesn’t want their families’ under this plan.

How can those who are Jewish be so pro-death?

The main point of that diary is this reminder:

Obama is using rule number 9 to insight fear, and quickly pass the healthcare bill before the American people catch on.

That’s right kids it’s the “Rules for Radicals” rule number 9 “The threat is more terrifying than the thing itself”. Obama is following this rule to a tee stating if we don’t pass this bill our healthcare costs will be out of control. He’s also stated the bill will offer an affordable healthcare option to the American people. Both points from the “Pharaoh of Fraud” are lies.

The Dems aka Scaremongers have been doing this for years.

Somewhere I have also seen a Dem/Obama operative suggest ways to exaggerate the situation to get health care to pass. I can’t remember where. If anyone has seen this, please post it. Thanks.

Found it–only it was about cap and tax. It was in RedState Redhot in which an interview Conor Clarke did with Thomas Schelling had this gem:

Find Ways To Exaggerate?! How About Admitting The Truth?

It’s a tough sell. And probably you have to find ways to exaggerate the threat. And you can in fact find ways to make the threat serious.

This is the talk of gangsters and dictators.
