Yeah, Bernake said the recession is probably over…but unemployment will remain high. Makes sense, companies fire more workers – thus have more capital. Recession over!

I think Dr. D explained that it is not quite that simple.

PG: “Didn’t you hear? The recession is over!

I DID hear that wonderful news!

Thank God we’ve abandoned that pesky metric of “2 consecutive quarters of positive growth” as a means of determining when a Recession is over!

Especially since we haven’t had ONE quarter of positive growth yet!

Kind of like, in reverse, of when the media declared in 2005 that we were IN a Recession…when we hadn’t had even ONE quarter of negative growth…let alone TWO at that point!

Texas is a new state added to this list. Michigan, Ohio and Georgia have long been among the states with the highest unemployment. In fact, Texas had more layoffs than Michigan in August. But then, Michigan companies are running out of people to lay off. In fact, some Michigan firms would have to hire employees just so they could have people to lay off.

Most of these horrific numbers have book ends that say, “the newly unemployed numbers are less than expected.”

The fact that the glut of layoffs have slowed is reason for enthusiasm???????????

Liberal logic, jan. A decrease in the rate of growth of entitlement spending is a ‘cut’ so a decrease in the rate of job losses is a ‘drop’.

I loved bc3b’s comment: “In fact, some Michigan firms would have to hire employees just so they could have people to lay off”

it’s kinda like saying the: “the death rate from the airplane crash slowed after 3 or 4 seconds” of course, that’s because everyone was dead by then…but the rate DID slow!

all that said…we are essentially in a plateau right now relative to unemployment. It will NOT improve dramatically no matter what. It might improve slightly in a given month…or get slightly worse in a given month.

Then again, there are some scenarios in which it will get dramatically WORSE very quickly…and some of those scenarios are looking more likely all the time.

    In other news:

Betty the Chimp, a 35 year old chimpanzee residing at the North Carolina Zoo, died this morning of heart failure. Betty’s heart was restarted twice using CPR, but died as a third effort was made.

The lack of a health care plan was not listed as the cause of death.

    Another definition of a liberal~~~

One who holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I have seen that in play out in the flesh so to speak. Company I used to work for would of course over a period of time have HR to headcount adjustments. So in many cases MGT would have more ‘People’ than they have ‘Bodies’. Fact if you were a line manager you would keep 2-3 ‘People’ as no hires. On the books and budgeted.

When the grim reaper came around the manager would offer up the ‘People’, HR would fall for it. They would wipe if off your budget but you lost nobody. What a great game.

Great moments in Liberal Epiphanies —

“You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.”

Not to put a damper on the certitude of the failure but no where in the article did I see the term ‘seasonally adjusted’. You would expect a peak in August. Many people (teachers, lucky teenager, etc) who had a summer assignment would be offing themselves from payroll. Heading back to school.

    Just sayin’.
