GOP Lawmakers Turn Up Heat; ACORN Defunded

2009 September 14
by bc3b

While MSM continues to ignore the leagal problems of ACORN, GOP lawmakers are starting to turn up the heat on the organization.

A growing number of Republican lawmakers are calling for congressional hearings and IRS audits of ACORN following the release of three videotapes that show the group’s employees offering advice to a “pimp” and a “prostitute” on how to skirt the law.

Rep. Steve King, R-IA, said a video released Monday that shows filmmaker James O’Keefe, 25, and Hannah Giles, 20, getting advice from ACORN employees in Brooklyn, N.Y., on how to launder their earnings and avoid detection while running a prostitution business is “another reason to turn it up” on ACORN.

Four ACORN employees — two in Baltimore and two in Washington — were fired late last week after videos showed the “pimp” and “prostitute” getting similar advice in those cities. In those videos, O’Keefe and Giles told the ACORN workers that they intended to bring underage girls into the country to work as prostitutes.

Full report.

Michelle Malkin reports on this afternoon’s Senate session in which ACORN was temporarily defunded:

Just watched GOP Sen. Mike Johanns introduce his amendment on the Senate floor banning federal funds in the current transportation and housing appropriations bill from going to ACORN. Currently, ACORN is eligible to receive millions more in taxpayer funds through mortgage counseling, Community Development Block Grants, and the Neighborhood Stabilization Program — in addition to the tens of millions ACORN Housing Corp. has already received.

The Johanns Amendment is #2355 to H.R. 3288.

Johanns cited the sting videos as evidence that ACORN cannot be trusted with government money:

“Until a full investigation is launched into ACORN, no taxpayer money should be used to fund its activities. A vote in favor of my amendment is a vote in favor of the taxpayer and a vote against the status quo.”

5:42pm Eastern. Roll call vote still underway. Several Democrats have voted AYE, including Cardin, Carper, Inouye, Johnson (SD), Murray, Tester, Warner, Bingaman, Begich, Nelson (NE), Webb, Landrieu, Bayh, Conrad, Rockefeller, Dodd, Pryor, Hagan, Kohl, Feingold, Boxer, Nelson (FL), Brown, Harkin, Lincoln, Wyden, Baucus, Klobuchar, Kaufman, Shaheen, Lautenberg (switched from no to yes), Menendez, Stabenow, Leiberman, Levin, McCaskill, Reid, Feinstein, Udall, Bennet (CO) Merkley, Cantwell, Dorgan, Schumer…

Durbin was a no. I’ll have the rest soon.

The final roll call vote – amendment passes 83-7. I’ll post the full roll when it’s up on the Senate site.

    Oy, vey…

The world has not tackled the problems at the heart of the economic downturn and is likely to slip back into recession, according to one of the few mainstream economists who predicted the financial crisis.

Speaking at the Sibos conference in Hong Kong on Monday, William White, the highly-respected former chief economist at the Bank for International Settlements, also warned that government actions to help the economy in the short run may be sowing the seeds for future crises.

“Are we going into a W[-shaped recession]? Almost certainly. Are we going into an L? I would not be in the slightest bit surprised,” he said, referring to the risks of a so-called double-dip recession or a protracted stagnation like Japan suffered in the 1990s.

“The only thing that would really surprise me is a rapid and sustainable recovery from the position we’re in.”

The comments from Mr White, who ran the economic department at the central banks’ bank from 1995 to 2008, carry weight because he was one of the few senior figures to predict the financial crisis in the years before it struck.

Mr White repeatedly warned of dangerous imbalances in the global financial system as far back as 2003 and – breaking a great taboo in central banking circles at the time – he dared to challenge Alan Greenspan, then chairman of the Federal Reserve, over his policy of persistent cheap money.

I think drdog was talking about this earlier. But it relates to your post #6, rwy, where there is healthy skepticism about an economic recovery at hand.

Do not tell these men and women about green shoots of recovery. As Briton Tim Huxley, one of Asia’s leading ship brokers, says, if the world is really pulling itself out of recession, then all these idle ships should be back on the move.

‘This is the time of year when everyone is doing all the Christmas stuff,’ he points out.

‘A couple of years ago those ships would have been steaming back and forth, going at full speed. But now you’ve got something like 12 per cent of the world’s container ships doing nothing.’

Jan, I posted a link to that article a few nights ago. It’s very sobering indeed and worth a read by anyone who thinks we are anywhere near to getting out of the economic hole we currently find ourselves in.

In three or four years we might see articles talking about how much the ghost fleet is no longer sea worthy due to lack of maintenance and they are beginning to sink. Let’s hope not.

    I agree 100%.

No economist would have come up with a pork laden stimulus plan. The POOR suffer the most during bad economic times and Obama’s economic policies have made this recession longer and deeper that was necessary.

Obama also pulled the plug on a highly successful dc school vouchers program.

He only uses the poor, for his own desire for raw political power.

Perhaps if the tree is shaken enough a few nuts might begin to blab… Of course, Obama can provide cover through the DOJ, but he’ll have less control over state attorney generals who might be looking to make a name for themselves through an Acorn take down. If an Acorn nut is looking at 15 to 25 in the slammer, they might just be willing to spill the beans on where the nuts are really hidden.

Instapundit has a story up that the sign (Bury ObamaCare with Kennedy) was professionally produced and there were “workers” passing those signs out to unsuspecting protesters. This sign is drawing all the negative coverage and minimizing the protest as right wing extremists.

The signs may well have been a plant. Bill O’Reilly, as usual, denigrates the protesters using this as an example. He also claimed attendance at 75,000. I wish Beck had his time slot. He’s useless as teats on a bull.

    So true!

And, it has been opposed because it has been so successful when able to be applied, especially to inner city schools! Comparison and contrast is NOT what the teacher’s unions want, nor the democratic party. They just want the status quo that feeds their party by keeping the people down on their knees, beholding to government handouts.

If Obama had really wanted to get the economy moving, he would have embraced ALL forms of energy (oil, nuclear, coal, plus the renewables ) , he could have had targeted tax cuts aimed straight at small businesses ( that create 90% of the jobs ).
Instead a huge chunk went to state governments to allow them to continue along like CA without having to reign in their spending. and of course all the special interest pork to groups like ACORN and money for “green jobs” etc. etc.

#30 that is just the liberal agenda coming out. The liberals run the dept of education and public broadcasting. We are being multiculturaled to death on tv. William Ayers was a very important link to the mind of a liberal. I won’t go into the MSM but others should have been pulling up his words that the ticket to their revolution was controlling the schools and education. We are seeing the effects now, with all the libs we are producing who come out of 13 yrs. of school with no knowledge of U.S. History but a dire concern for polar bears.

The vouchers are the answer. If we took the money we collect through taxes now that is dedicated to education and had the dept of ed. just issue vouchers to all school age children, the free market would correct the education problems. the taxes would stay the same and people would choose. Once the dept of ed. was only distributing and redeeming vouchers, they would be removed from power over our children. Think about it.

Sharp – If the school system ran on the voucher system, the schools with the best teachers would have the kids (money). So the teachers union could push for benefits and pay, but if the school had no money, the teachers would be laid off. “Laid off” is the only reason teachers ever get fired. And open competition for students would make INDEPENDENT schools more unmotivated to work with unions. The auto workers union has only been able to kill that idustry because it has been a monopoly. Toyota didn’t cave to unions and they will survive. The schools that operate in their own best interest would make the unions obsolete.

Sometimes they have a number of ways to offset tuition costs (scholarships, etc.). The Lutheran schools in the Detroit area have fairly low tuition if you are a member of one of the sponsoring parishes (or whatever Lutherans call their churches).

What force does this “de-funding” REALLY have?

The House controls spending…is this just more Kibuki theater???

I sure hope someone in the House puts forth a measure with actual spending attached to it…then we’ll see.

The House still needs Senate approval on the appropriation. Constitution dictates that funding requests must originate in the House.

#97 – I absolutely agree. No one is mentioning it, but Congressman Issa already issued an 81 page report calling for investigation of Acorn for embezlement. The whole point of that document was to go ofter the ringleaders. Issa specificly wanted to address the fact that the same people keep committing the same crimes under a different name. Even they manage to bring them down, tying them to the Prez is a sifnificant bonus.

KH, I assume it will have to be hammered out with the House in committee. It may yet be stripped from the final bill, but for now it’s a huge short term victory. If it is stripped, it is almost certain to cause a ruckus as there are 100,000’s of eyes on the amendment.

What the vote seems to indicate is that ACORN is becoming radioactive. And which prominent politician just happens to have very close ties to ACORN?

“I never saw the Eckert brothers again, in time this war, like every other war ended.
But I never forgot, and come to place often, when no one else does.

Oh yeah, I forget, ACORN isn’t in the MSM news, but it’s still spreading like wildfire. Perhaps we are witnessing the demise of the MSM. Is this what it would look like?

  117. 2009 September 14 11:26 pm

Nah I’m happy ACORN is getting a much needed spanking, not discounting the sort of win here, I just think longer term this worm who’s tail is currently being chopped off, will just re-grow itself is all.

  118. 2009 September 14 11:35 pm

    What a distraction?

Obama the ultimate contingency operation prosecutor!

“WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Iowa senator Tom Harkin, newly empowered to investigate health matters as chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, promised on Monday to probe deeply into any potential links between cellphone use and cancer.”

I’m while I don’t particularly have issue with this shouldn’t the chairman of this committee have bigger things to investigate and focus on right now? Seems to me there might be some bigger issues to investigate in terms of the topics of Health, Education, Labor …. just saying.

Apparently this is just HUD funds in the current pending bill. Clearly, a LOT more would have to happen to remove ACORN from the government/taxpayer teat even if this bill were to pass. However, it’s a start and a pretty good one at that. Who would have thought a week ago that this would have happened?

Amazing what two enterprising 20-somethings with a video camera can do.

At some point reaction to all this has to cause questions to be asked of Gibbs, or perhaps even Obama himself. That will be worth popping some popcorn to watch.

Exactly… it but once source, these fuk’er have there arms into all sort of agency funds.

The upshot? The Danes retain the title of world’s most prolific wind producer, and President Obama cites their experience as a path to be followed. The cost? Danish ratepayers are forced to pay the highest utility rates in Europe. And the American people are led to believe that, though wind may only provide a little more than one percent of our electricity now, reaching a 20 percent platform – as the Danes have allegedly done – will come at no cost, with no jobs lost and no externalities to consider.

“VIENNA — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton warns that human trafficking is flourishing in the shadows of the global economic downturn.
