UN Study: Honduran Removal of Zelaya Was Legal
It appears the UN may have come down on the side of the rule of law and freedom! At Hot Air, Ed Morrissey links to this news:
…Hondudario, translated by Google, reports that the UN’s Department of Political Affairs concluded that the removal of Zelaya from office was legal and justified (via La Gringa’s Blogicito):
A study by the Department of Political Affairs of the United Nations Organization (UNO) on the causes of the crisis in Honduras, concluded that the removal of President Manuel Zelaya, “was constitutional under the laws of the country,” confirmed officials of that agency.
Ed goes on to comment:
If this turns out to be true, though, it would come as a shock and embarrassment to the White House. The Law Library of Congress has already reached the same conclusion, a development which the Obama administration has ignored, and which most of the media have studiously avoided mentioning.
I could not find any additional sources to confirm this story. I assume that Ed put the qualifier into his conclusion because he is waiting for confirmation from the UN’s Department of Political Affairs website. Fausta notes:
The UN’s Department of Political Affairs website was last updated in September.
UPDATE
As I stated in the podcast, until we can actually read and link to the UN report, it’s best to remain skeptical.
The verification of this news will leave the White House without any justification for their policy stance and actions, and further exposes the paucity of their commitment to the rule of law and constitution in Honduras. This will also act as a roadblock in similar future situations.
UPDATE: More developments today:
First, Moe Lane at RedState has this on the UN study (his emphasis):
A recent Honduran media report appears to refer to an analysis submitted by a consultant as representing the views of the Department of Political Affairs This is highly misleading. The Department of Political Affairs routinely receives reports and analyses of this type from consultants, academics and other experts. But its views are strictly in line with that outlined in the General Assembly Resolution.
The UN Resolution labeled Zelaya’s removal as a coup.
Second, earlier today Gateway Pundit had a link to the AFP stating that an agreement had been reached between Honduran negotiators to restore Zelaya to power until the November elections. His Honduran sources told him this news had not been reported in Honduras and the agreement would need to be ratified by both sides. From this account I found tonight in The New York Times, Accounts at Odds on Honduras Deal, Zelaya’s negotiator was evidently trying to force the situation:
Victor Meza, the Zelaya negotiator, said a tentative deal, which he hinted would restore Mr. Zelaya to the presidency, had been sent to Mr. Zelaya and Mr. Micheletti for approval. But soon afterward Mr. Micheletti’s representatives reported that there was no agreement to return Mr. Zelaya to office and that negotiations would continue on Thursday.

wow, I sure hope our State Department doesn’t see this! They’re already created their own narrative…and facts are SOOOOO icky!
[2]
INC! Good to see you!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aww, too bad they’ll be embarrassed. I wish there was something worse than eating crow for something of this magnitude.
[3]
Welcome home INC.
[4]
Hello, INC
If you’re not tuned in, Rush is smacking Sharpton and the race hustlers around.
[5]
Hey, beej!
You’re right–there ought to be something worse than eating crow! I am getting the idea that the international community (with the exception of a few liberal pols) may be intent on force feeding Obama a lot of feathered fowl over the next few years. Even they may get exasperated with too much self-serving narcissism!
[6]
Hey, ip! Thank you!
[7]
How ironic that the UN, of all people, has to error on the side of truth…something the Obama administration can’t bring themselves to do on ANYTHING, either foreign or domestic, these days!
BTW, did any of you see on Drudge today?
Tenetative inspection program would allow Russia to visit U.S. nuclear sites Fox News
???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
[8]
While I am totally uneasy about our domestic policy, especially HC, which is making it’s way down the pike, it is Obama’s international naivete, coupled with his narcissism that has me awake at nights.
He seems utterly deaf, blind and with no savvy as to what is going on around the world! I fear for us all!
[9]
It appears the UN may have come down on the side of the rule of law and freedom!
Wow, more proof we are living in bizarro universe. Anyone know when we slipped through the vortex from the normal universe?
[10]
Sometime last year.
[11]
Many forecasters, including the White House, expect trillion-dollar deficits to continue for the better part of the next ten years. But here’s a relief: The White House is not cool with that!
Don’t you feel better now?
[12]
May God save the poor brave Hondurans from tyranny. Please, God, they are brave, save them…
[13]
The WH is not cool with that? And what do you suppose their response will be? Not spending cuts?
Shockah…
[14]
Maybe Honduras can hold out, but the price has been high….
I’ve update the post with a few new developments.
I’ll also be putting together a new post on the UN study with commentary from La Gringa.
