Anthropogenic Global Warming Going Up In Smoke

2009 November 21

As a break from health care and to encourage you, here’s more news on the AGW fraud expose.

The fun really is beginning. After years and years of hype and scare, some things are becoming unraveled with the hacking of the University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit.  Click on the East Anglia link if you missed the beginning of “Climategate.”  That thread at Watts Up With That? has over 1300 comments on it right now.

Yesterday on Watts Up With That?:

WUWT’s post on the CRU data hack was the number one post on WordPress today, beating out CNN, People magazine, and other well known media outlet posts.

I became a weather junkie a while back,  discovering Watts Up With That? several years when Anthony Watts was written up in an online article that outlined his surface stations project.  The physics and math can easily go beyond my expertise, but I check in from time to time to see the latest news.  I have been impressed with Watts determination to fairly report the science no matter what the data may say.  His colleague Stephen McIntyre of Climate Audit, is famous as a co-author of a paper challenging the hockey stick-shaped graph of changes in the Northern Hemisphere temperatures since the year 1000. The Wikipedia article at the hockey link has a picture of the graph.

The political significance of the scientific controversy over the graph centers on its use as part of the evidence for anthropogenic global warming. The MBH98 reconstruction was prominently featured in the 2001 United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Third Assessment Report (TAR) and as a result has been widely published in the media.

The controversy of the moment from the hacked information is about Mike’s Nature Trick, mentioned in one of the hacked emails.  It is all about manipulating the data to get the hockey stick graph.

So far one of the most circulated e-mails from the CRU hack is the following from Phil Jones to the original hockey stick authors – Michael Mann, Raymond Bradley, and Malcolm Hughes….

I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline.

The e-mail is about WMO statement on the status of the global climate in 1999 -report, or more specifically, about its cover image.

…grafting the thermometer onto a reconstruction is not actually the original “Mike’s Nature trick”! Mann did not fully graft the thermometer on a reconstruction, but he stopped the smoothed series in their end years. The trick is more sophisticated, and was uncovered by UC over here. (Note: Try not to click this link now, CA is overloaded. Can’t even get to it myself to mirror it. -A)

When smoothing these time series, the Team had a problem: actual reconstructions “diverge” from the instrumental series in the last part of 20th century. For instance, in the original hockey stick (ending 1980) the last 30-40 years of data points slightly downwards. In order to smooth those time series one needs to “pad” the series beyond the end time, and no matter what method one uses, this leads to a smoothed graph pointing downwards in the end whereas the smoothed instrumental series is pointing upwards — a divergence. So Mann’s solution was to use the instrumental record for padding, which changes the smoothed series to point upwards as clearly seen in UC’s figure (violet original, green without “Mike’s Nature trick”).

If you go over to WUWT? and look at the graphs, you can see the padded data of the violet line going up, while the green line is going down.  Interesting, huh, to say the least!!!

What has been the reaction so far to this email and the other emails and information that is now online?

From the New York Times: Hacked E-Mails Fuel Climate Change Skeptics

Some skeptics asserted Friday that the correspondence revealed an effort to withhold scientific information. “This is not a smoking gun, this is a mushroom cloud,” said Patrick J. Michaels, a climatologist who has long faulted evidence pointing to human-driven warming and is criticized in the documents….

“This shows these are people willing to bend rules and go after other people’s reputations in very serious ways,” he said.

From Andrew Bolt (via Michelle Malkin):

So the 1079 emails and 72 documents seem indeed evidence of a scandal involving most of the most prominent scientists pushing the man-made warming theory – a scandal that is one of the greatest in modern science. I’ve been adding some of the most astonishing in updates below – emails suggesting conspiracy, collusion in exaggerating warming data, possibly illegal destruction of embarrassing information, organised resistance to disclosure, manipulation of data, private admissions of flaws in their public claims and much more. If it is as it now seems, never again will “peer review” be used to shout down sceptics.

This is clearly not the work of some hacker, but of an insider who’s now blown the whistle.

More to come, I’m sure.

UPDATE: Bruce had a link in the Open Thread to an American Thinker column on this scandal,

The Evidence of Climate Fraud:

Criminal? Oh yes, indeed. As this mock-science serves as justification for trillions of dollars in imposed and proposed new taxes, liens, fees, and rate hikes — not to mention the absurd wealth-redistribution premise of international climate debt “reparations” — such manipulation of evidence should be treated as exactly what it is: larceny on the grandest scale in history.

    Woodward & Bernstein…call your office!

Except 99% of potential “Woodwards and Bernsteins” could not care any less about FACTS when it comes to this. Anthropogenic Global Warming is a RELIGION to them…the ONLY religion!

I’ve mentioned it before, but a friend of mine at work is one of the smartest people I know on science subjects…EXCEPT on this! When I confronted him about 6 months ago with the FACT that the average GLOBAL temperature had been dropping since 1998 his response was:
    That’s caused by Global Warming”

I am NOT making that up! I tried to give him some wiggle room and re-explained that the statistics showed that the GLOBAL temperature was falling…not just a case of it being hotter one place and colder in another. How, I asked again, could GLOBAL temperate DROPPING be evidence of GLOBAL temperature RISING???

He got flustered, muttered on for a few moments and stomped away. I had offended his GOD! We’re still friends…but have not talked about this since.

Heh, JR. send your friend a link to that article.

Like INC I have been gathering data on this from the outset. Just the notion that CO2 has anything to do with climate is absurd on its face.

I sent my 5 remaining liberal friends a link to the article in my comment above…of course I said I didn’t think any of them were amongst those that still believed in GW. While I was at it I asked why the Healthcare Bill being voted on tonight was being represented as costing 850 billion over 10 years when the actual cost when fully implemented would be 2.5 trillion.

I wonder how many liberal friends I will have left by this time next year? :)

    I had offended his GOD!

global warming is indeed a religion. Even after this news, people are still attempting to defend it beyond all common sense. In Sept I took my son to the National History Museum for a field trip and we went to the IMAX theatre to see “under the sea”. They explained that as the polar ice caps have melted over the last 400 years, that the sea levels have risen and the coral reefs rose with the sea level building living mountains almost a mile high. (from memory, don’t quote me here). But because of global warming, the reefs are dying.

And I’m thinking, does anyone in this audience realize that they just disproved global warming on common sense alone? If the ice has been melting for 400 years, then global warming isn’t man made. and if the sea has been rising then the reef seems to be attempting to rise toward the sun and warmer waters.

O/T, but it is now being reported that all of these morons have decided to vote for cloture:
Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana!

All three issued the obligatory: “But I’m concerned with blah blah blah”

I cannot believe the CONSERVATIVE majorities in those three States will return those three morons to the Senate!

Apparently Lieberman, who VOWED to filibuster the Motion to Proceed if the Bill contained the “Public Option” (which it DOES) is now going to vote for cloture as well.

True, and people will just ignore it.

The law will charge a tax for bosses who don’t offer insurance. So, companies will reduce jobs to the number of allowed employees that slip under the threshold, and then contract with the rest….

So, the Feds will have to tax people directly to pay for this, and in fact I believe the law as written already does this. Plus, the tax starts right away, while the program does not start until 2013.

So people are going to lose their jobs and see their incomes reduced in substantial, impossible to ignore numbers, and we will see what effect that has on elections.

States are going to see tax revenue bottom out, and just might give the feds the middle finger to survive.

    We will see.

But the people voted for this, I have not ONE OUNCE of sympathy for them.

INC, if anything this should slow down the climate monster if only because a whole bevy of careers are just about ended. If you wish to commit a fraud on the scientific community you must do it well and never be discovered. But once you are exposed you are toast.

To not publish is to perish in the brain game. For those exposed in the emails, no scientific journal of any reputation will touch these people or their results with a 10 meter pole. Unable to push their ‘results’ they will drift to oblivion unless political forces maintain their stature. That’s doubtful over the long term.

Such an Inconvenient Suite of Email.
