ClimateGate Blasts Open!

2009 November 24

ClimateGate explodes!

Iain Murray has an excellent summary of what you need to know about the documents (hacked/leaked/accidentally made publicly available) from Great Britain’s East Anglia Climatic Research Unit (CRU).

Three Things You Absolutely Must Know About Climategate (via Hot Air)

First, the scientists discuss manipulating data to get their preferred results….

Secondly, scientists on several occasions discussed methods of subverting the scientific peer review process to ensure that skeptical papers had no access to publication….

Finally, the scientists worked to circumvent the Freedom of Information process of the United Kingdom….

Got that?  Good.  Now, where do we go from here?

Why investigations, lawsuits and satire, of course!

Dr. Dog linked to an excellent column by Robert Tracinski that outlines the fraud, ClimateGate: The Fix is In:

This is an enormous case of organized scientific fraud, but it is not just scientific fraud. It is also a criminal act. Suborned by billions of taxpayer dollars devoted to climate research, dozens of prominent scientists have established a criminal racket in which they seek government money-Phil Jones has raked in a total of £13.7 million in grants from the British government-which they then use to falsify data and defraud the taxpayers. It’s the most insidious kind of fraud: a fraud in which the culprits are lauded as public heroes. Judging from this cache of e-mails, they even manage to tell themselves that their manipulation of the data is intended to protect a bigger truth and prevent it from being “confused” by inconvenient facts and uncontrolled criticism.

The damage here goes far beyond the loss of a few billions of taxpayer dollars on bogus scientific research. The real cost of this fraud is the trillions of dollars of wealth that will be destroyed if a fraudulent theory is used to justify legislation that starves the global economy of its cheapest and most abundant sources of energy.

This is the scandal of the century. It needs to be thoroughly investigated-and the culprits need to be brought to justice.

Investigations:

Inhofe: CRU Scandal Bigger than ACORN Flap

ClimateGate: Both sides of the pond demand probes into data manipulation scandal

Lawsuits:

“Climate Gate” Development: CEI Files Notice of Intent to Sue NASA (via Watts Up With That?)

And the final blow, mockery:

Satire:

Iowahawk Geographic: The Secret Life of Climate Researchers

Minnesotans For Global Warming (via WUWT?):

Oh, yes, and by the way, the MSM has finally begun to take notice as well!

Previous posts on ClimateGate: here, here and here.

    Very funny video.

I just read an AP article I can’t link here (Google: Icebergs head from Antarctica for New Zealand), but I do have to pull out two paragraphs at the end of the article (which I think is fair use).

First this one which summarizes the gist of the article: Large numbers of icebergs last floated close to New Zealand in 2006, when some were visible from the coastline in the first such sighting since 1931. It is rare for whole icebergs to drift so far north before melting, but a cold snap around southern New Zealand and favorable ocean currents have again combined to push the towering visitors to the region intact.

But, this is was the final paragraph in the article: Young said that having the icebergs end up near New Zealand is not necessarily linked to global warming, but said that the rate of icebergs breaking off the Antarctic ice shelf in recent years may have increased due to dramatically rising temperatures on the continent over the past 60 years.

OK, let’s get this straight. Icebergs have been seen off the coast of New Zealand in 2006 and this year for the first time in 70 years. However, the article strains to link the icebergs to Global Warming! WTF? What the hell caused the icebergs to be seen off the coast in 1931?

Sheesh, you can’t make this stuff up.

KH, I don’t know the specifics regarding the ban on linking to AP. Has to do with AP going after a few select blogs and other web sites in civil court for linking/quoting their articles — even though such things fall clearly within the “fair use” exception to copyright laws. A NY Times article here may explain a little more.

Perhaps JM or JR can explain this sites policy regarding AP stories in more detail as I was living under a rock when it was put in place.

I just find it odd.. I can see people not want entire articles quoted, but a snippit and and a link I would think would benefit them more then it hurts them. No matter what the rules I find it hard to believe they are going after blogs for things some links in there ‘comments’ area but maybe I’m wrong and they are that stupid.

Eastern Syria becoming a new al Qaeda haven
US intelligence officials are concerned that Syria is becoming an al Qaeda haven, as the terror group becomes increasingly intertwined with Ba’athist groups operating from Iraq’s neighbor to the west.

Al Qaeda has refocused its efforts to build an infrastructure in eastern Syria after its network in Iraq was decimated by Iraqi and US security forces from 2007 to 2009, and now the organization is partnering with former Ba’athists from Saddam Hussein’s regime.

“A major concern is that eastern Syria will begin to look like northwestern Pakistan,” where al Qaeda has joined forces with the Taliban and directs attacks to destabilize Afghanistan, a senior US military intelligence official told The Long War Journal.

A couple things about Global Warming-Climate Change.

    1. Isn’t it interesting how Europeans jumped all over this when Al Gore said it was real. Without any wait time they believed it.

    2. Isn’t it great the AMERICANS (US) did not believe it right away. They didn’t fall for Al Gores BS. Otherwise an international treaty would have been passed 8 years ago based on faulty data.

    3. One thing is for sure AND THIS IS IMPORTANT. Global Warming is man-made. Of course it is man-made by scientist that cooked the books.

The worst part is that the dishonest media goes along with the lies. Just as we discussed yesterday when CBS gave the Dems a 13% advantage (when the real difference is 6% according to Gallup).

AP has a standing policy that only members may use their materials. They extended that to bloggers in 2006. Now how MPT did his posting falls under fair use provisions of the Copyright Act. However there has not been a test case of AP defending the extent of their restrictions vis a vis Fair Use a yet in court.

JM concern is, lets not make BJG the test case for this.

I don’t disagree with your assessment as it would relate to amnesty. However as it relates to polling, hmmm. I take it your contention is that if amnesty passed that the polling would go from 73% to 95%? If so why? Pollsters generally don’t ask are you an illegal when they ring a household. If anything the polling numbers probably include that % of the population that is here illegally in their number, less 5% or so that will just refuse to take the poll.

The question I want to know is how is Al Gore involved? The man’s a Pol, on scientific matters he has the IQ of a fruit cake. So he schlummed his way into this deal based on inside information then tapped some financial folks to monetize it. But who/what was Al’s link to jump on this bandwagon? The depth of this fraud could be far more reaching than just a few kooks holed up in basements cooking data. Played right we could destroy about a third of the democratic base in peeling back this onion. (Imagine every environazi org neutered and you understand impact this could have on the Dims.)

Why do we have morons like this Daivd Brooks smuck calling themselves Conservatives and righting this absolute horses^*t:

“We all have to decide what we want at this moment in history, vitality or security. We can debate this or that provision, but where we come down will depend on that moral preference. Don’t get stupefied by technical details. This debate is about values.”

I like this guys response as he is absolutely correct:

    http://healthcare.nationalreview.com/

“There are elements of truth in Brooks’s words, and he’s right that this debate is about values. But it’s not about decency versus vibrancy, about easing anxiety versus promoting growth.

Rather, it’s about liberty versus equality, personal control versus governmental control, dispersed power versus centralized power, freedom versus statism, American Founding principles of limited government and natural rights versus Progressive principles of activist government and conventional (man-made) “rights.”

There is nothing particularly noble, compassionate, or decent about helping to hold a gun to your neighbor’s head and saying that he or she must now pay more money to the state to cover the costs of someone else’s health care. Compassion and decency are much more in evidence in offering your own limited time or hard-earned money to help the needy, in imploring (not forcing) others to do so, in forming civil associations to help, even in leading local government action (from which people can far more easily flee if it becomes oppressive).

This debate is about vibrancy; that is true. But it’s also about decency, and they’re on the same side of the fence. For there is nothing more decent than fighting for liberty”

I would add that there is nothing decent about getting millions killed early and to promote the killing of the unborn with tax money….

Plus this useful idiot Brooks unquestionally excepts the statist premsis that this “saves money” – utterly false as premiums and taxes will skyrocket!

Also, there isnt a wit of “security” when the government has you by the balls for your medical care and keeps pinching harder….

The whole complete finanical collapse thru debt thing kind s^&tcans “securtity” too IMHO….

Didnt this Brooks clown gush about what a “wonderful” centerist ObScuma would be? Sheeeh, no wonder only the NYT will employ this goatcluster…..

    WEC,

The core argument is one of security. Or should I say the lack of one. No one has security short of their ability to fend for themselves. To then turn to the government and have someone claim that having health care provided is security if false. Fact it is worse that false.

For now one has a person believing they are secure in their physical being via coverage. Only to find out that when they absolutely need the coverage they are excluded by the edicts of some board. Worse yet having no recourse on the issue.

“I take it your contention is that if amnesty passed that the polling would go from 73% to 95%?”

No, somewhat the opposite. With more Hispanics includes, Obama’s non-white approval rating might drop somewhat (as he is more popular with blacks than Hispanics). My contention is that Obama’s overall approval rating would be higher than the 49% it currently is with more Hispanics.

My overall goal was to show the country would be more liberal after amnesty, which I believe we all agree on.

That SOB Gore has costed untold Americans many jobs because of his part in the global warming bullshit.

However, first we must ask, ‘What did he know and when did he know it?’

I’m under the impression that he was duped (at first) then became aware of the fraud and then has helped to maintain the fraud.

If you have the time, read through some of the links I had above. If I’d done any excerpts, the post would have been two miles long. This is from the Inhofe link:

Inhofe points out that the CRU data were used in the 2007 report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was subsequently used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as it prepared its guidelines on carbon emissions. These connections, he says, are very worrisome for the American taxpayer.

“There are tremendous economic ramifications to what these guys were trying to do,” says Inhofe. “The IPCC, for years, has been costing the government so much money, and now, wasted time in trying to pass faulty legislation based on bad data.”

Inhofe tells us that he will begin an investigation into the e-mails soon. Today, he sent letters to several scientists, some of whom allegedly manipulated climate data, as well as the inspectors general of the EPA and the Departments of Commerce, Interior, and Energy, other governmental organizations.

While the GOP might occassionally err badly and get downright gutless and stupid, they are much much better then the hard core statist party….

Plus, you live in fantasy land if you expect politicians to be some thing akin secular saints…..they are in the business of aquiring popularity and power for themselves for the most part…..thats why you have to maintain active participation in the political system to keep them in check….

Well, I don’t know, but I’ll make this last point and then shut up on the topic. There are some people that just ring true, and others that ring hollow.

Beck is an entertainer who just happens to have a staff that can do a good job of connecting the dots. He’s a latter day Will Rogers. That being said, there is no harm in accepting some of the things he points out when he has the facts behind him. When he’s wrong, well that is for each of us to ferret out as well.

But he is doing two things you rarely see on TV these days. 1) He highlights the problems average Americans face and what Wash DC policies are doing to them. Re: His Friday shows with Doctors and conservative blacks come to mind. 2) He will dedicate a whole hour to a specific issue from time to time that has been in depth in some cases. Most of TV does a 1:53 on such issues and moves on.

    Just Sayin’.

#93 I concur. Identify problems and whining is easy.

Also, proposing “solutions” that amount to nothing more then sheer fantasy is easy too – especially ones like thrid parties that are sheer losers….

As Mark Levin points out, the only workable alternative is to get involved with the VIABLE alternative to the statist party and WORK to change the party and bring the message to your communtiy….of course this takes HARD WORK that few are will to do….

Much easier to say “they are all the same – I wont work, participate, or vote – I will just whine or engage in useless activity”

Again, if you are looking and expecting anyone running for political office to be anything other then human with attending flaws, you will be sorely disappointed everytime…

Besides, I thought that the “politcal savior” stuff was for the statist who thing a king-like fiqure and attending aristorcarcy/elite should make all the decsision in life for us and provide for like children….

I am an adult – I dont need a “charismatic” politican or savior – I just want someone who cans stay consistently dedicated to protecting my rights/freedoms and is committed to limited government/federalisim….

They dont need to save the world either, again that utopian socialist stuff…..they just need to make thing a bit better then go back to private life and pay their taxes like the rest of us!

#94 Again, I dont disagree with you – beck is good at investigating things and highlighting problems….

But he sucks at properly assesing blame and proposing solutions…..he is downright dangerous….

One of the major causes for us looking down the barrel of permeant statist/leftist/socialist rule is that folks like him have carried the water on the D fifth column campaign with this “they are all the same” crap or by fanning the flames of “all or nothing” ideological purity in the R party…..

Hey WEC, how can you go wrong with the attitude “They both suck!”? That is what Beck seems to pitch. His proposed solutions are a libertarian, Founders principles ideal. Some of it would work (it did before remember) others probably not (eg immigration).

Well, see they dont both “suck”….

And to the degree that the R party “sucks” still much better then the hard core statists….

Also, the degree to which they suck is in a large measure a reflection of our own apathy and inactivity – we reap what we sow…..

The Beck pitch is dangerous in that you need to win elections to matter – this “both are the same” and “we need something new” crap simply dives conservatives/R and allows the D to win….

This is dangerous and foolish IMHO

You have to take Beck for what he is, and dr dog is right. He is an entertainer.

He delves into current events with a point of view palatable to conservatives. He is not a movement. Beckism will never be Reaganism, and Beck will never be taken seriously as a policy maker.

The biggest disservice to Palin right now is Fox asking if the 2012 ticket will be Palin/Beck. That marginalizes her and reduces her to nothing but celebrity level. Of all the hype about Beck, that irritates me the most.

All you have to do is see Graham, McCain, Snowe, et. al in action to know they are just not the express lane. If there is a difference between the two its this — One is reformable (Reps) the other is not and deserves to be jailed (Dims).

#101 As large as this country is, if your party is the majority you will always have your Snowes, etc to deal with….

If you insist on all-or-nothing thought or results you will always get nothing…..or the shaft like we are just dealing with right now….

There was and is a huge difference between R and D – to run around and foster populist nonsense and splinter the opposition vote is nonsense

#102 I never said he was not entertaining or an assest…..I simply said that his third party and all-the-same line is BS and dangerous to the overall goal of perserving our individual rights and liberties!

While getting rid of two commie advisors is nice, they are simply replaced with more (and there are thousands more out there) of the same and are just an email away anyways….

The only permenant fix to this is to WIN elections with candidates who can beat the oppostion…..

This requires adult maturity on our part in that we should not expect perfection from our politicians and that someone with us more often then not is much better then a 80-100% down the line statist….

I agree with Phineas about Beck. The guy gives me the creeps.

Two things: (1)he equates R’s with D’s…..which is dangerous and absurd. I have a lot of problems with R’s but they are not Marxists and Fascists like the majority of D’s so it is disingenuous and harmful to imply they are equals.

    (2) he always cites Murrow as a great journalist for calling out Joe McCarthy. That ought to piss you off too, Tony. The successful demonization of Joe Mc opened the door for the Commies to take over academia, entertainment and media.

I give him a more good than bad rating, like BOR. But I don’t trust him, I think he might be pushing 3rd party in a year when is absolutely necessary we win back the House.
