UPDATE: Suspect alive and in custody

UPDATE 5:20 EST: ABC News (via Hot Air):

The suspected gunman was identified as Major Malik Nadal Hasan. He was killed and two other suspects have been apprehended, Lt. Robert W. Cone said.

Ed Morrissey:

According to Brian Ross at ABC, Hasan was a convert to Islam.

*****Original Post Below*****

FOX News: At Least 7 Dead, 12 Wounded in Shooting at Ft. Hood in Texas.

Update from FOX:  Wounded count at 20.

FOX is reporting one suspect is in custody.

The men were reportedly dressed in Army fatigues, but military officials couldn’t confirm that they were Army personnel.

NBC:

…One gunman was reportedly in custody and another was on the loose, NBC News said. A third shooter may be involved, according to NBC News affiliate KCEN, which said the person had opened fire on the SWAT team at the base.

There is conflicting information.  We’ll have to see how it sorts out. Austin American-Statesman:

An Army spokesman at the Pentagon says the shootings began about 1:30 p.m. Thursday at a personnel and medical processing center at Fort Hood, the AP said.

The spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Banks, says two shooters were apparently involved….Greg Schannep, an aide to U.S. Rep. John Carter, said he was on the Army post to attend a graduation service. He said that as he neared the entrance of a building where the service was being held, a soldier with blood on his uniform ran past him and said a man was shooting.

Schannep said the shootings appeared to have occurred in a complex near a theater where the service was scheduled….

Live Twitter feed.  Take it with a box of salt.  The updates will be mixed–probably some from news agencies and some from individuals.

…it is too soon to tell whether there is any link to battle stress or repeated deployments. The Army is suffering a record high suicide rate and other signs of stress from fighting two wars.

Latest reports indicate that the shooters were military, but how you can conclude so quickly that it was not inside terrorism, I don’t know.

You’ll know the race or ethnic group soon enough–if it was white male the media will be trumpeting it, if minority look for many oblique, non-descriptive references.

    Austin-American Stateman has this:

In a statement, U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Austin, says the shootings at Fort Hood were an act of terror.

    His words:

“This appears to be a coordinated attack against our military. Whether it was directed from a foreign or domestic source it is still an act of terror.”

    I’m seeking his elaboration.

Any of you Texans know about him? It seems a bit too soon to say this as well.

He was chairman of the Homeland Security Investigations subcommittee in 2006, that produced the report “A Line in the Sand”, that I’ve linked to numerous times about problems on the border.

Wylie, soldiers generally do NOT sit and wait to be killed. One shooter with an automatic weapon could do such damage…but the rate of fire with handguns, and the limitations on magazine size make this utterly unlikely.

Yes, a 9mm handgun with 15 round magazine (standard USmil issue, very popular among civvies too, I own three of them) could easily do that much damage, and it’s possible he had a spare mag or even an extra pistol.

But it must have been a confined area, or a radius of less than 50′, most likely.

    I don’t know.

I hate how they say No Terrorism before they even know anything, and when the killer is Muslim.

#104 Well they were unarmed professionally trained soliders. Also, while everyone does get BCT (Basic Combat Training), the number of soldiers who actually are in frontline combat units (Infantry, Armor, Field Artillery, Combat Engineers) are actually fairly small in number (like maybe 1 in 5). Other types of non-combat units would not have the types of close combat skilled soldiers need to perhaps take aggressive counteraction especially unarmed.

Yeah, I hate pure speculation but the military does make exceptions and offer higher then entry level rank (2LT) for specific medical skills sets if there are short in that medical speciality….as I said, just a possibility. This guy could have came in as and served 10-12 years too we just have to see. But the medical branch does get these type of exceptions to get skilled medical professionals since it takes years to get trained as a Doctor, nurse, etc.

People will probably slam me for making this “insensative” comment/observation but medicial/doctor shortages in the military are a chronic problem as its basically a mini-socialist medical system where they essentially become government employees on a fixed income. The younger doctors that the militray pays the education for often leave service after a few years for higher pay in the civilian medical world. So the military must constantly recruit and give special exceptions to get older personnel in to fill the shortages. They also import alot of contracted civilian Doctors from India, etc just like Canada and the UK do to fill slots in stateside hospitals. Also, many bad US docs contract to work for the military as they get immunity for malpractice.

Just something to thing about as HC so-called reform will be back in our grill on SAT.
