Whitewashed Tombs:
Abortion and the Health Care Bill

2009 November 7

As a result of the Democrats meeting last night, it’s obvious Pelosi decided the best political advantage for her was to allow a vote on Stupak’s amendment prohibiting federal funds for abortions.  Of course, as you know, this is a meaningless amendment because even if it passes the Democrats would never allow it to survive later if the bill ever makes it to conference.  Michelle Malkin writes:

Update 4:45pm Eastern. Boehner exposes phoniness of Stupak amendment. Asks Rangel if it passes, will Ds guarantee that it stays in the final bill.

Rangel snottily says that such a guarantee might be an ethics violation.

Yes, Rangel balking at possible “ethics” violation.

Chutzpah.

Key issue now: Will pro-life Dems go along with the Kabuki Stupak amdnt vote knowing that the federal abortion ban will not survive negotiations?

This is the second time today that a Democrat has admitted this.  A commenter at RedState wrote earlier this afternoon that Henry Waxman said there’s no guarantee the amendment will survive after passage of the bill.

If those “pro-life” Democrats didn’t realize that before, they have no excuse for saying they don’t know it now.  The cynical use of a pro-life vote to give cover on a yes vote for the bill is a maneuver that won’t work.  If their conscience doesn’t bother them, their constituents will!

You can follow updates at NRO’s Doctor! Doctor! About 4:30 pm, Cantor has sent Kathryn Lopez a list of 31 Democrats who have said they will vote against the bill.

UPDATE: Karl in The Green Room in Is the House GOP enabling PelosiCare? has more on the contemptible use of this amendment by “pro-life” Democrats.

Michelle Malkin has begun a second thread to continue live blogging.

They always had the votes, this little charade was to allow the so called blue hogs to play to their more conservative base back home. Piglosi will allow some of them to vote no to save their hides nov 10, but hold back enough to just pass it. An old trick, that fools no one.

From the start of his campaign on August 10 until an election eve debate on October 30, Owens adamantly opposed the type of public option that is contained in HR 3962, the Pelosi bill the House is voting on later today.

In his statement today lauding Owens, President Obama unwittingly confirmed what had been reported here earlier today–that the voters of the 23rd Congressional District had been misled throughout the campaign by Bill Owens that he opposed the Pelosi public option Health Care bill, and that, had Mr. Owens’ been honest with the voters throughout the entire campaign he would not have won the special election.

    Ok, here’s the Cuisinart tragedy…ready to email….

My Aunt Clara Schwartz lost her leg while preparing a large dinner for some crippled orphan children. The Cuisinart exploded just as she was adding the organically grown carrots to the Tofu-Bean Sprout mixture. Shards of carrot-coated Cuisinart parts lacerated her leg, and blood gushed everywhere. We rushed her to the Emergency Room but they refused her medical care claiming: “it’s a Pre-Existing Condition”! They claimed that anything that happened BEFORE you got to the Emergency Room was by definition “Pre-Existing”…and thus she was turned away. We managed to save her life, but she did eventually lose her leg. The sight of her hopping about on one leg, trying to still care for the orphan children is almost more than we can bear. The only bright spot in all this is that the crippled children now look to her as a role-model! Please pass Health Care reform. I would provide more details regarding the Cuisinart “accident”, but my lawyer says it might compromise our $16.5 million lawsuit.

No woman plans the unplanned, eh? Dang, next you’ll tell me that women have no idea what causes pregnancy in the first place. Rape and incest victims represent 1% I believe of all abortions (though it might be as high as 3%) so I would argue that women do indeed plan to get pregnant if they have sex, otherwise they would use appropriate protection. Granted, accidents happen, but that is the risk you take by having sex. You cannot risk the slightest chance? Keep your legs closed.

You would think during the 2 hours of debate so far, Pelosi would’ve been able to find at least one person who died because of not having HC insurance or one woman who died because she wasn’t able to murder her unborn because the US government wouldn’t pay for the procedure or the child who was just minding his own business, but because he had no HC insurance, the H1N1 virus attacked him.

JM, at our HMO my wife and I cannot get the H1N1 vaccine at this time because it is being rationed to higher risk individuals such as health care providers, the elderly and children 12 and under. From the Washington Times–

The Washington Times caught up with the brand new Democratic congressman from upstate New York, and asked him about the campaign promises he is being accused of breaking, but Mr. Owens seems to think he does not owe his constituents any explanation of his vote tonight other than telling the Washington Times Water Cooler to read his press release.

What about 2010? Congressman Owens refused to speculate at this point whether or not he felt confident about the 2010 election.

It seems when Mr. Owens’s local paper tried contacting his office, they received the cold shoulder as well:

When The Gouverneur Times attempted to contact Mr. Owens to clarify this information, we received no direct response to our phone or email inquiries.

Finally, The Water Cooler pointed out to the congressman he has no public website for constituents and press to contact him to speak of and a crucial vote is currently going down. His response? The Washington Times received a gmail address of his chief of staff and a “we’re working on getting all those things up and running.” How convenient.

    from NRO:

    http://www.hedgehogreport.com/

2:35 PM: Chairman Waxman Won’t Guarantee That Speaker Pelosi’s Final Health Bill Will Include Stupak Anti-Abortion Language

In an exchange this afternoon on the House Floor, House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) asked Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) if he would guarantee abortion opponents that Rep. Bart Stupak’s (D-MI) amendment barring federal funding of abortion in Speaker Pelosi’s government takeover of health care will not be jettisoned from the bill by Democratic congressional leaders in House-Senate conference negotiations if the Pelosi bill passes the House with the Stupak amendment attached.

Chairman Waxman’s answer? “No guarantee can be made by me or any other Member at this time.”

From our buds at HHR, a translation on the Stupak amendment thing:

it means that Pelosi was afraid to actually count the votes because it would have officially failed. By not counting the yeahs and neighs it allows them to go and strong arm some Dems who were voting no into voting yes. It also allows the amendment to live on because it hasnt been officially voted down

Basically they are tabling it now.

Right after Boehner introduced an amendment to allow purchase across statelines, to allow small business to join larger groups, and to put in abortion restrictions amongst other things. Now the Dems have to go on record voting no against all of these things.

FROM Cory the socialist on HHR:

Allow me to caveat this by declaring it as total speculation… but here is my best guess:

Pelosi made a deal with the blue dogs to get their support for the HC bill in return for allowing a vote on the abortion amendment. Both sides likely assumed the amendment would pass.
Now, with GOP support for the amendment up in the air, Pelosi needs to make sure that the blue dogs will honour the deal, even if the vote on the amendment fails. My guess is she won’t allow the amendment vote to take place, until she knows whether or not she needs it to pass.
