Carol of the Bells

Bells have been used for centuries to mark events of significance.  Carol of the Bells was composed by the Ukrainian composer, Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovych and is frequently performed by handbell choirs. These handbell ringers in Taipei are unique, however; their entrance and processional as they ring out the notes enhances and expresses the melody. The sight and sound is a wonderful way to ring in Christmas Day.

I had just a smidgen of handbell training years ago, and I have to tell you I absolutely love this processional. Not only is this song one that I love–and it is so fitting to a processional–but I am so appreciative of their performance. Watch the wrist technique of those who are holding multiple bells as they allow only one note to precisely ring.

Handbell choirs usually stand behind the table with their bells laid out in exact order. It takes concentration and exact coordination of timing by everyone for a wonderful performance of the music. To combine that skill with walking in procession together and transitioning to bells on the table is quite marvelous.

I’m not sure, but I believe the man at the end in the white tie is Kevin Mazimas Ko, the director and composer of this arrangement.
