Sarah Palin & the Tea Party Movement

2010 February 7
by bc3b

I am sure MFG ’s first Super Bowl Game Day thread is just a few hours away (after he clears his head from last night’s pre-game parties). But, let’s start game day by discussing the Tea Party movement, the weekend’s Tea Party National Convention and Sarah Palin.

Starting from nowhere last spring, the Tea Party movement has been embraced by millions of middle class Americans, who attended rallies and have begun becoming precinct captains, stuffing envelopes and making calls for conservative candidates. National, regional and local meetings obviously were the next step as this energy has to be channeled into productive action, particularly in an election year.

Regarding the convention, the lowlights were Joseph Farrah bringing up the “birther” issue and Tom Tancredo’s presentation. The highlights were the organizing sessions and speeches by Andrew Breitbart and Sarah Palin.

Breitbart attacked MSM, telling then ” It’s you that suck.”

While others bailed on the Tea Party Convention as criticism grew, Sarah Palin embrased the movement and the national convention. From the moment she took the stage last night (well, maybe after she wished Ronald Reagan a happy birthday and expressed her pride in being an American) Palin was on the attack and she didn’t stop long enough to read Barack Obama his Miranda Rights. She attacked a “charismatic guy and a teleprompter,” and his policies regarding national security, the economy and the direction he is taking the country. She forsook the use of a teleprompter to emphasize the differences between herself and the President.

At the end, Palin took aim at the media, derisively referring to it as the “lame stream media” and stating that at the end of the day, what they say doesn’t matter. In her resignation speech, Palin threw down the gauntlet by telling the media to “quit making things up.” Since then, she has escalated her war with the media, figuring there’s nothing to gain by treating MSM with respect.

Several things are certain: Sarah Palin is in the fight for the long term; she definitely has linked her future to the Tea Party movement; she will remain a major player on the national stage; and she will continue to dominate the media like no one other than the President. This morning Sarah Palin is front page news in Europe, Tokyo and other places around the world and the Associated Press is in full attack mode.

In case you midded it, here’s her speech.

Hat tips: Gateway Pundit, Free Republic, You Tube, CSPAN and FNC.

pretty bad…but then the A/P has a reputation to live down to. No matter what Obama says it is “historic”, and whatever Sarah says it is “unworthy”

the fun thing is…they had to write about her. Just as CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, and NBC declared her career OVER!!, they had to cover her too!

    Careers ARE ending…theirs.

CAPTION on Politico: Antonio Hinton and his three cohorts asserted in a quickly put-together press conference outside the convention hall.

What’s wrong? That’s NOT Antonio Hinton…Hinton is BLACK. But being Black and Conservative doesn’t fit Politico’s far-Left narrative for the Tea Party being a bunch of Rednecks. So they use a picture of a White guy!

“The palpable whiff given off by the White House inner circle is that they’re the last people on the planet still besotted by Barack Obama, and that they’re having such a cool time starring in their own reality-show remake of The West Wing they can only conceive of the public — and, indeed, the world — as crowd-scene extras in The Barack Obama Show”

“While others bailed on the Tea Party Convention as criticism grew, Sarah Palin embrased the movement and the national convention. …”

BC, if this is an intended dig at Bachmann, keep in mind that as a sitting member of Congress she has to answer to ethics rules of the Chamber. When it became clear that the convention would be a for profit situation her only course was the action she took.

If it is not a pointed view of Bachmann it could be construed that way.

in taking a tour around the blogosphere this morning I am struck, again, at how desperate the media is to write the Obit of the Tea Party movement.

Todays meme is: “It’s now simply the Republican Party”. Multiple sites are claiming that because Palin showed up, and she’s a Republican, then ipso facto it’s the GOP all over again.

The drive-by media keeps trying to drive a stake through the heart of the Tea Party…and they look increasingly stooooopid trying to do so.

Palin, taking on the Press? No problem as I see. My only observation is Breitbart is probably better positioned to tweak their noses on that score like he did in his speech yesterday. :) Had Palin delivered the speech that Breitbart did yesterday, the Left would have plastered ’sour grapes’ all over it.

the arrow of time continues to point this way: 2010==>2012

I truly don’t give a rat’s ass who the Repub nominee is in 2012 at this point. The Dems/Media cabal want us to focus on that…to drive wedges wherever possible. Geraldo had Huckabee on last night, and those two talked about that at length…to discredit Palin.

Worrying about 2012 is like being in car that is careening towards a cliff and worrying about whether your insurance will cover a 1,000 foot drop off of it. The more immediate concern would seem to be NOT going over the cliff. IMHO :)

whew!!! I don’t really care about 2012 at the moment either, other than that I hope people pay attention to who is attempting to move closer to the right NOW so as not to be so obvious is 2011. I think we need to heed the warnings such as people in MN accusing Pawlenty of moving right earlier this year. The short term voter memory is killing us.

MFG – 2010 is helping citizens, the teas, etc hone their skills on how to organize and support for OUR candidates. It is also giving us time to take over many low, instrumental positions (precinct managers) and find the best communication skills. So I think there is plenty of focus on 2012, just more of a consensus of who we DON’T want than who the candidate will be. I think if the Teas win the day in 2010, the faces of 2012 may get a good shuffle.

This is a spectacular article – it hits it spot on about what the tea party movement is all about:

    http://www.americanthinker.com/2010/02/populist_constitutionalism_and.html

“Social conservatives, fiscal conservatives (that might be liberal on some social issues), libertarians, and moderates can agree to disagree about issues like abortion, legalized drugs, gay marriage, etc. The Constitution teaches all of them that the resolution to these problems should be conducted on the state or community level, as opposed to the national, level.

These divergent groups agree that the federal government has, over the last several decades, stepped further and further outside of the bounds of the Constitution. Issues, including health care, cap and trade, and excessive regulation of businesses are outside of the specific powers granted to the federal government. More and more Americans are aware of this fact. And more and more Americans are sharing the promises and the premises of the Constitution with their friends and neighbors through Tea Parties being held across America. This is what I mean when I say that the Tea Party is “populist constitutionalism.”

This is EXACTLY the correct view of how American government should be view and organized – the Republican party would be wise to adopt this premise!

Well Mitt’s book is moving up (#6,073 on Amazon this morning), but I just don’t see him being the nominee. Imagine how out of place he would be with the Tea Party movement. While it isn’t called that, the Tea Party movement is definitely a populist movement. It will be interesting to see exactly what it accomplishes this year. Let’s face it, while some Tea Party members are Democrats or independents, whatever effect it has will be primarily within the GOP.

I agree, 2010 is everything. The minimum we need is a political resetting. During the last 3-4 elections Liberal and Moderate Democrats were able to get voters to believe they were more to the right than they really were. Of course they will try it again, but this time it will fail. It has to.

I’m looking for just about every shade of traditionally red districts to revert back to Republican. I can also see quite a bit of light-blue and even some moderate blue districts/states turning red.

An update from Doug Hoffman in NY-23:

While he hasn’t announced his candidacy yet, a McLaughlin & Associates poll released last month showed 74 percent of Republicans in the district agreeing that Hoffman deserves another chance at the seat.

NationalJournal.com caught up with Hoffman last week to ask him about his plans for November.

NJ: If you do decide to run, would you be running as a Conservative candidate or vying for the Republican nomination?

Hoffman: I’m going to try to get both of the tickets — the Republican ticket and the Conservative line.

NJ: One activist told me that the Tea Partiers are keeping the GOP “at arm’s length.” Given this attitude, do you think that running under the GOP umbrella might turn off some Tea Party voters or independent voters?

Hoffman: The people that supported me and came out to support me knew that I was a lifelong Republican and knew that I was fighting for the heart and soul of the Republican Party, so I don’t think it will turn it off. I think I can be the catalyst, especially in the 23rd District, to bring the two movements together and work effectively, not only for my campaign but for the other Republicans in the district.

NJ: How would you compare the reception that you’re getting from national Republican Party leaders this time around to that from last election?

Hoffman: 180 degrees. They’re very enthusiastic, receptive, and we’re going to work together to win in 2010.

She should have asked Wallace how designating Todd to do anything would be any different than President Bill Cinton appointing Hillary to negotiate the healthcare reform of the 90’s. Hillary was not in any political office or employment and no first lady has negotiated with Congress for policy before. What’s good for the goose…….
