Texas and Immigration

Texas is unique in many ways. Second largest State in the union. The Lone Star may be flown equal to the Stars and Stripes. The only State to be admitted by treaty. But Texas is unique on the immigration front as well.

Americans, Texians as they were to become known were not alone in their love of the region. The Tejano, the indigenous Mexican population were also in the region as well. By all accounts the situation was a peaceful one as the land that was being offered by the Mexican Governemnt was open range. Range disputes were to come later in Texas history.

When the Texas Independence erupted the Tejano was there with the Texians. Tejano’s fought at the Alamo with Travis. Tejano were present at the capture of Goliad, Battle of Concepcion and the battle of San Jacinto.

After independence Tejano were represented in the Republics legislature. Sadly to be displaced over time. Only recently have Mexican-Americans reasserted their political presence.

The point of all this history? Due to Texas’s origins taking a them vs us political stance is fraught with some peril. The Hispanic one might berate quite possibly could trace his or her family tree to standing shoulder to shoulder with Sam Houston. A fact that does not go unnoticed in this State. Which brings some interesting divisions.

Hispanic vs black. There is a certain undercurrent of johnny come lately between the groups. The Hispanics observing first rights. Men like councilman Price (black) agitating like he does does not help the situation. With numerical superiority in many counties the Hispanic community asserts itself in those situations.

Hispanic vs Hispanic. That too. Sort of like the ‘old money, new money’ schism. Will they close ranks? You bet. Does not mean that the established Hispanic community wants aliens, MS13 and other gang bangers around.

Hispanic vs White. Mixed bag. Great deal of tension in the urban areas. Many cities the police are dominantly white. Smaller communities with long established everyone knows everyone its less of an issue. Whites in Texas are the major-minority in the State.

Bottom line. Texas politically is less likely to be full bore radical on immigration. Will an Arizona like law pass in Texas? Yes. But probably a bit more subtle with more empowerment of local officials to deal with sanitation and occupancy laws and closure of sanctuary cities provisions.

Why then, should any of this affect the policy regarding illegals? Enforce the laws like everywhere else……what the ethnic makeup of the various areas are, should not matter.

    excellent thread, drdog

and a big “Amen!” to rwy’s comment!

If we cannot as a nation have BORDERS, and laws which (a) enforce those borders and (b) allow for legal crossing of them with the intent to become part of our nation…then we are NOT a nation

And if we’re NOT going to be a nation, then so be it…let’s hurry up and make THAT happen.

But the selective enforcement (or not) of laws means the laws are BOGUS to begin with.

More awful economic news today. Man, it’s getting worse!

rwy, here is my response as promised.

Any difference in enforcement? No. But as was pointed out in a previous thread about Perry, the how is going to be different. In a State where the culture has been shoulder to shoulder for both Whites and Hispanics some provisions won’t fly. For example, inquiry for immigration status for a routine traffic stop as is provided for in AZ probably won’t muster here. So the alternative is, should an officer deem it necessary to hand cuff you, the immigration inquiry begins at that point. Which for Texas usually means the person in question is considered to have committed a class II misdemeanor or worse.

There is also the political consideration of passing such a law. In a State where Whites are the major minority at 49% of the population requires support from other ethnic groups. The Blacks in this State are hopelessly represented by the Looney Left types. There will be no help there. So to carry the day one will have to turn to the Hispanic community to carry the bill over the top. Perry knows this. It can be done too, but the appeal is going to have to be one of public safety an a appeal to old values.

    So the subtleties are —

    * Arrest will trigger the status inquiry not routine stops.
    * Local communities will be given greater enforcement powers for site occupancy and public safety laws to prevent 20 people to a room type situations.
    * More local border enforcement to prevent entry.
    * Eliminate sanctuary cities like Houston by withholding State funds sharing.

    Just my take….

    Eph, you are soooooooooo misinformed!

Our Dear Leader responded to the news that the GDP went from an annualized rate of 5.7% last quarter to 3.2% now by saying:

After the single biggest economic crisis in our lifetimes, we’re heading in the right direction. We’re moving forward. Our economy is stronger — that economic heartbeat is growing stronger.”

Please re-calibrate your gauges accordingly! Less is more. Worse is better. Down is up.

    happy to help! 🙂

drdog, how about an appeal to AMERICA?? Would that work?

I happen to be of European descent…i.e., I’m Caucasian. Big whup. I’m an AMERICAN. I don’t want Caucasians breaking into my country any more than I want anybody else doing so!

I want people standing shoulder to shoulder with me of ALL colors, creeds, religions, genders and sexual orientations (and any other sub-group I missed)…as long as they put AMERICA first they’re my friend!

Or, if America dissolves, then whatever territory we DO carve out I want people in THAT territory who are willing to defend it! Same rules apply.

Your points in re. Texas are excellent…I just hope folks can look past their OWN skin color and ancestry, and pull together. Has anyone in Texas made THAT appeal to the “Latinos”???

In the last Governor’s race Kiki Friedman the independent went with that line of reasoning. It resonated with a lot of people Hispanics included. But not enough, he finished dead last. But I have to tell ya, Texas is like what the US must have thought like before the Civil War — State first, then country. One still gets a lot of “You know around these parts Son, we just don’t do that kind of s@#$.”

A ‘Do it for America’ attitude exists. Enlistments in the Services from Texas have been high among all groups. So its possible. But I think it is colored somewhat by ‘what in it for us as well?’. Ironically Katrina gave Texans a taste of what an invasion could look like. The great majority of NO displaced persons ended up in places like Houston, Bay City, etc. But it did make many, including Pols, wonder what to do if we had 300k non-friendly types pour across the border.

A former officer in Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence agency who has close links to terror groups has been found dead, apparently executed by a Taliban-linked group.

A group calling itself the “Asian Tigers” killed Khalid Khawaja, a former Squadron Commander in the Air Force, and dumped his bullet-ridden body in Taliban-controlled North Waziristan.

Perry’s problem~~Trying to pander to the large “latino” population who won’t vote for him anyway. He talks a good game about states rights, but refuses to implement the same. Another stuffed shirt pretty boy phony.

Governor’s race aside, Perry knows if he wants to get any sort of AZ type law passed he has to get 10-15% of the Hispanic legislators to say yes. That’s the political reality here.

He might not, Perry I mean. He might even be able to scuttle it. But I suspect it will be debated. Moves a foot to introduce such a bill.

    A little humor:

    And God Created Tennessee

God was missing for six days. Eventually, Michael, the archangel, found him, resting on the seventh day.

He inquired, “Where have you been?”

God smiled deeply and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds, “Look, Michael. Look what I’ve made.”

Archangel Michael looked puzzled, and said, “What is it?”

“It’s a planet,” replied God, and I’ve put life on it. I’m going to call it Earth and it’s going to be a place of Balance.”

“Balance?” inquired Michael, “I’m still confused.”

God explained, pointing to different parts of Earth. “For example, northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth, while southern Europe is going to be poor. Over here I’ve placed a continent of white people, and over there is a continent of black people. Balance in all things.”

God continued pointing to different countries. “This one will be extremely hot, while this one will be very cold and covered in ice.”

The Archangel , impressed by God’s work, then pointed to a land area and said, “What’s that one?”

“That’s Tennessee , the most glorious place on earth. There are beautiful mountains, rivers and streams, lakes, forests, hills, and plains. The people from Tennessee are going to be handsome, modest, intelligent, and humorous, and they are going to travel the world. They will be extremely sociable, hardworking, high achieving, carriers of peace, and producers of good things.”

Michael gasped in wonder and admiration, but then asked, “But what about balance, God? You said there would be balance.”

God smiled, “Not very far from Tennessee is Washington, DC . Wait ’till you see the idiots I put there.”
