Barton Town Hall

Mansfield City Hall

4/16/2012 12-1pm

Approximately 30 people attending. Composition was about half conservative, another third middle road and the balance libs.

Barton opened up with the usual pleasantries. Covered what the legislative agenda has been over the last quarter and what lies ahead. He also covered a handout that compares the RNC, Ryan and Obama budget proposals. See copy here.

His close emphasized three areas —

  • Some sort of deficient reduction plan passed this year.
  • Rein in the EPA
  • Eliminate overlap in Health Research R&D ($60bn on the table.)

Barton’s disposition is always flip from what you expect of a Politician. His words are deliberate and measured. Exact opposite of a say a bombastic Anthony Weiner.

Attendees Concerns

Deficit was the big one. This topic alone was probably the most on the minds of everyone there. The Libs of course wanted to increase taxes. If only stares could kill. One Lib was so brain dead they were still mouthing the ‘Bush did it’ line. Interestingly Barton did not mention the $40Bn CR save as a win. He was one of the 59 who voted nay.

Barton continually used ‘falling off a cliff’ so I think he gets it.

Defense. Tangentially defense came up as a component of budget cuts. Barton pointed out that there maybe some avenues to pursue but the best that could be expected is to delay or draw out certain programs to achieve savings.

Entitlements. Brought up as how protect it. No easy answer. It got around to would you favor shutting down the government. Crowd seemed evenly divided. Asked if we would be willing to cut entitlements everyone raised their hands for an unequivocal yes. Even the Libs which surprised me.

I did get a chance to speak. I merely pointed out that — 40% of the budget is owned by foreigners, principally the Japanese and Chinese. The Japanese will probably start selling their T-Bills to help pay for the earthquake disaster. The Chinese had a 30% drop in the Beijing Real Estate market last month. If that continues the state run banks will sell their T-Bill holdings to maintain solvency. I like the Ryan plan, but you have 5 years not 28 or we’re off the cliff. Barton indicated he agrees with 90% of what was said. Also indicated 5 years was about right on the time line before we make the leap.

Usual Town Hall meeting. Pretty good crowd considering that the weather would be more for a ride on the Harley than sitting in a meeting room. Barton seems to understand the urgency on the deficit. He does have a balanced budget proposal he is trying to push. I don’t think it has a prayer but we shall see.

JR. No. One Lib was a bit of a bore but other wise a tame event. What I did not mention was that there was 1 Tx Ranger and a Mansfield cop on site during the event. Most assuredly an outcome of the Giffords tragedy.

ya’ll have fire ants down in Texas, right? A few of those judiciously dropped down the back of a Lib should do it! 🙂

Too subtle. This might be considered however.

Buy the Lib some beer, suggest he tip toe thru the Lupine and leave the rest to God’s wisdom….

Is the University of Texas now Fort Knox South?

April 16 (Bloomberg) — The University of Texas Investment Management Co., the second-largest U.S. academic endowment, took delivery of almost $1 billion in gold bullion and is storing the bars in a New York vault, according to the fund’s board.

The fund, whose $19.9 billion in assets ranked it behind Harvard University’s endowment as of August, according to the National Association of College and University Business Officers, added about $500 million in gold investments to an existing stake last year, said Bruce Zimmerman, the endowment’s chief executive officer. The holdings are worth about $987 million, based on yesterday’s closing price of $1,486 an ounce for Comex futures.

    Another signal…..
