Tag Team Strategy Between Romney and Paul?

Bryon York suggests that Mitt Romney and Ron Paul may have teamed up against Rick Santorum:

MESA, Ariz. — Rick Santorum suspects something is up between Mitt Romney and Ron Paul.  Santorum had a tough night at the 20th, and likely last, Republican debate, held here at the Mesa Arts Center. He took a lot of attacks from Romney and a few from Paul, and he noticed that Paul and Romney didn’t seem to go after each other.  When it was all over, and Santorum met reporters, he didn’t try to hide what he was thinking.

“You have to ask Congressman Paul and Gov. Romney what they’ve got going together,” Santorum said.  “Their commercials look a lot alike, and so do their attacks.”

“They’ve got something going on?” a reporter asked Santorum.

“You tell me,” Santorum said.

Santorum’s aides have long suspected that Romney and Paul have some sort of deal by which they attack other candidates but not each other.  “Clearly there is a tag-team strategy between Ron Paul and Mitt Romney,” top Santorum strategist John Brabender told reporters after the debate.  “There’ve been 20 debates, right?  Why don’t you go back and see how many times Ron Paul has ever criticized anything Mitt Romney has done.”

“Ron Paul has for all practical purposes pulled out of Michigan,” Brabender continued, referring to next Tuesday’s primary.  “Anybody see him up in Michigan? And yet where is he running negative ads against Santorum?  Michigan.”

A few feet away, Romney aides dismissed the accusations as “whiny silliness.”

“Oh, please,” said key Romney strategist Stuart Stevens.  “The notion that Ron Paul would do anything but speak his mind is — if ever there was an iconoclast who got up there and said what he believes, it’s Ron Paul.”

I caught that last night!!!!!! I would love to have the video of Newt’s response to the Romney earmark attack, btw. He knocked him good over the Santorum flame.

Where is your “I hate Newt” blurb????

  4. 2012 February 23 1:13 pm

I have to admit, Santorum is hanging in there much better than I expected.

If he wins Michigan this baby is over.

They may be in collusion, but it’s not because Romney has promised the VP spot to Paul. That ticket would be a laugher.

    Secretary of the Treasury perhaps.

While Santorum got “tag teamed” last night, he didn’t make any fatal errors (aka Rick Perry) last night. Also, that was the 20th debate and people are getting debated out. As you said, we’ll see.

You can’t read too much into Gallup as it is a multi-day rolling average.

I think we won’t know the impact of last night and of the carpet bombing of Santorum for a couple more days. Mitt has a big advantage in the absentee ballots in Mi as well. I am not optimistic about Rick’s cances there…..if he loses big in Mi it may bring on a final Newt surge! That would cheer up my pal bc3b!!! 🙂

I’m still hoping Rick can weather the storm but he’s got a lot of crud being thrown his way…..just like that idiot Rush dealt with today (see the last quotes on the previous thread for that doozy).

Mark levine is postulating that ron paul is sucking up to romney so as to give his kid a shot at VP.He can do this by staying in the race to garnish delegates to give to paul when the time is right.

Ron Paul: “Mitt, do you REALLY love me…or are you just using me to get at Rick?
Mittens: “I REALLY love you Ron!
Ron Paul: “Mitt…so can we play my favorite game again tonight?
Mittens: “Which one is that, Ron?
Ron Paul: “Where you dress up as the Federal Reserve and I ‘Audit‘ you!
Mittens: “[*sigh*]Sure…but can you ‘Audit’ me more gently than last time??

    – Obama APOLOGIZED to Karzai (piggy-backing on the GROVELING a Marine General was forced to do yesterday)

An Afghan soldier, angry over the burning of Korans, fatally shot two U.S. troops and wounded four others

So a few of their F**KING BOOKS were CORRECTLY BURNED after having been defaced by MUSLIMS…and now two American troops are DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And Obama’s reaction? He’s at a $30,000 a plate FUND RAISER (decrying rich people)

Nothing surprising here. We’ve talked about this a lot. And, since only about half the population pays no federal income tax, you can take that number and double it. The average tax-paying family of four’s share will soon be $400,000.

JR #18 – listening to Mark Levin comment on the matter and it went something like this:

“Obama sends a letter of apology to Karzai over the koran burning incident . . . Sarah Palin is demanding an apology from Karzai/Afghanistan for the brutal murder of 2 of our troops.

I ask you – who is the more presidential material?”

Interesting point. Ron Paul is running attack ads against Santorum in MI even though Paul has virtually conceded the MI GOP primary and is not actively campaigning here.

  24. 2012 February 23 7:18 pm

It would be interesting to see if those are new ads, or old ones already paid for.If new ones, he is a stalking horse for romney.

I think Romney will win. It will be close, but I am thinking he will pull it out. Restore Our Future is spending a ton on the radio and TV working to portray Santorum as a big spending Washington insider. As I said in an earlier comment, Paul is also running ads attacking Santorum even though Paul has written Michigan off and has not been actively campaigning here.

Santorum is running a few ads attacking Romney, as is Gingrich. am surprised Newt is spending any money here as he under 10% in virtually every poll.

The RCP poll average has Santorum up by .6%, but we all know how effective negative ads can be.

Paul doesn’t have a ton of money. Why spend money in a state where you are not actively campaigning and have no chance of winning? I think we know the answer – the headline of this thread.

“Attacking families is a special, elite skill. They have introduced numerous concepts intended to break up the family unit. It used to be that a family was a homogenous whole. Grandparents, parents and kids lived together. But now we’ve got kids, “teenagers,” adults and “retired” people, each group with its own agenda, supposedly.

At the end of the day, you “retire” to a hostel or hospital to die. Few seem to die at home anymore, certainly not in the US. The idea of breaking up the family unit into disparate parts is that it foments further social disorder and alienation. As families fracture, the state benefits.

Why is this to the power elite’s liking? Because the powers-that-be operate via mercantilism. The stronger the state, the more power they accumulate behind the scenes. ”

I wish this decomposition could get through the MSM filter that protects the kenyan from any blame for bad things, and gives full credit to him for all things good.

And then, when you have 49.5% of the people living on the dole, hard truths don’t equate with a government check.

“bc3b – what is the feeling up in Michigan?”

    Santorum by 4.

The MSM usually underpolls him by about 5 points. So take the RCP avaerage and add 5 points to Santorum and that is your final spread.
