The Ministry of Truth is pleased to announce…
George Orwell’s novel ‘1984’ was intended to be a CAUTIONARY TALE…not a “Government for Dummies” manual. Likewise, Orwell’s ‘Ministry of Truth’ was NOT intended to be a MODEL for “Journalistic Ethics”. Alas, the current Regime and the MSM are using ‘1984’ in EXACTLY those ways! And today’s “glorious” news from the Un-Employment front is the clearest example yet…
Winston’s job was to rectify the original figures by making them agree with the later ones. As for the third message, it referred to a very simple error which could be set right in a couple of minutes. As short a time ago as February, the Ministry of Plenty had issued a promise (a ‘categorical pledge’ were the official words) that there would be no reduction of the chocolate ration during 1984. Actually, as Winston was aware, the chocolate ration was to be reduced from thirty grammes to twenty at the end of the present week. All that was needed was to substitute for the original promise a warning that it would probably be necessary to reduce the ration at some time in April.
—but then the very next day Winston is watching a viewscreen when it is announced that Big Brother is RAISING the chocolate ration to twenty grams!—
It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week.
—poor Winston…it is when he starts to notice things like this that he sets himself upon the road to perdition, for it will cause him to DOUBT Big Brother!
That was ‘1984’…this is ‘2012’…
Last week CNN breathlessly told us THIS happy news!:
In another sign of improvement in the labor market, the number of people filing for unemployment benefits once again fell to a four-year low last week. The Labor Department reported that 348,000 people filed for initial claims. That’s down 5,000 from the 353,000 who sought help the previous week!
CNN tells us THIS happy news today:
In another sign of improvement in the labor market, the number of people filing for unemployment benefits once again fell to a four-year low last week. The Labor Department reported that 359,000 people filed for initial claims. That’s down 5,000 from the 364,000 who sought help the previous week!
Yippee…they FELL 5,000 to 359,000 this week. All of you who have (ILLEGALLY!!) retained LAST WEEK’S report showing claims at 348,000 are hereby instructed to ERASE THOSE LIES FROM YOUR COMPUTER IMMEDIATELY!!
I LOVE Big Brother!
