The Price of Freedom
In ‘A Christmas Carol’ Ebenezer Scrooge undergoes a marvelous transformation between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. He changes from a miserly curmudgeon who thinks Christmas is a “Humbug!”…to a kind and generous man, filled with the Christmas spirit, and determined to use his money and time doing some good.
Quite a transformation. But he undergoes another transformation as well…he goes from being a Progressive Democrat to being a Conservative Republican.
Progressives: taxes are charity. Conservatives: charity is charity. The difference between GIVING your money (and/or time)…and having your money (and/or time) TAKEN. Here is the Progressive “logic”:
- People don’t donate enough to support all the “worthy causes”
- The only way to ensure that all those “worthy causes” get enough money is to COMPEL people to “donate” to them!
- The only form of compulsion the government has that can force “donations” is taxes
- Therefore: taxes ARE charity!
No really…that’s the “logic”. Perhaps that’s one reason why Democrats routinely give dramatically less to charity than Republicans. Joe Biden, for example, has given less to charity in the last 10 years than I have…yet has financial assets at least 50 times mine (or more).
Consider this exchange from early in ‘A Christmas Carol’ between Scrooge and Mr. Howell, who is seeking a charitable contribution from him:
MR. HOWELL: At this festive season of the year, Mr. Scrooge, it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the poor and needy, who suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of basic needs; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, Sir.
SCROOGE (looking up): Are there no prisons? Did they disappear?
HOWELL: Oh, no, sir. There are still plenty of prisons.
SCROOGE: And the workhouses for the poor? Still in operation, I assume?
HOWELL: They are. Still, I wish I could say they were not.
SCROOGE: The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigor, then?
HOWELL: Yes, very busy, sir.
SCROOGE: Oh, well, I was afraid from what you had said that something had stopped them in their useful course.
JEEVES (Howell’s partner): Given that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer to the multitude, a few of us are trying to raise a fund to buy the poor some meat and drink, and some means of warmth. …What shall I put you down for?
JEEVES: Ah! You wish to be anonymous, then?
SCROOGE: I wish to be left alone. I don’t make merry myself at Christmas, and I can’t afford to make idle people merry. I am taxed for the institutions I have mentioned, and they cost enough.
Scrooge has no interest in donating…he considers his taxes to be donation enough. “Progressives” want to force people to pay high and higher taxes, so that THEY (the “Progressives”) can re-distribute that money “correctly”! The government WANTS us to have nothing left to donate…nothing. Neither time nor money. They want everyone dependent on the Government, and everyone getting only want they need, while taking from them all that they can in the form of taxes. “From each according to their ability, to each according to their need“. And they want us feeling bitter about it, because that further divides us…leaving government as the only “refuge”.
Sen. Rand Paul has a question he asks people that pops this Leftist bubble brilliantly: “You have an extra $100, and want to do some good with it. Given these two choices, what would you choose: (a) send the $100 to the Federal Government or (b) send it to the Salvation Army??”
Even an honest Democrat (they are thought to still exist in the wild) would admit that sending it to the U.S. government would be like flushing it down the toilet.
Tax Day was a couple days ago. Regardless of when you filed your taxes, did paying them make your heart swell up with human kindness, knowing all the “worthy causes” the government would put that money to? Nope.
Charity DOES make your heart grow, and IS good for the soul. Whether the donation is money or time, a little or a lot…if it is money (and/or time) that we GIVE, then it does let us feel just a little better about ourselves. Money (and/or time) taken at the point of a gun (or the IRS…same thing) just makes us feel used. (though it does ensure the GSA can continue to have kick-ass parties!)
The Obama Regime seeks to shut down every TRUE charity they can (churches, the Salvation Army, etc). Thus they are seeking to reduce or eliminate deductions for these from the tax code (but leave IN donations to “GreenPeace”, et al), seeking to close Catholic hospitals by forcing them to perform abortions, and putting pressure on hundreds of other charitable causes that don’t fit the “Progressive” mold.
At the end of ‘A Christmas Carol’ Ebenezer Scrooge seeks out Mr. Howell in order to make a donation (“with a good many back payments included”). He is now seeking to GIVE his own money (and later, his time) to help others…and is filled with the spirit of Christmas and humanity in the process. He has become a Conservative Republican.
Whether it’s a few coins dropped in a Salvation Army kettle, an offering in the collection plate on Saturday or Sunday, or just some freely given time or money donated to a cause you feel is worthy, charity is truly its own reward. Taxes taken under threat of penalty or prison are NOT “charity”…and only leave us feeling used, and bitter.
Charity is its own reward…and part of the Price of Freedom.
