The Price of Freedom

In ‘A Christmas Carol’ Ebenezer Scrooge undergoes a marvelous transformation between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  He changes from a miserly curmudgeon who thinks Christmas is a “Humbug!”…to a kind and generous man, filled with the Christmas spirit, and determined to use his money and time doing some good.

Quite a transformation. But he undergoes another transformation as well…he goes from being a Progressive Democrat to being a Conservative Republican.

Progressives: taxes are charity. Conservatives: charity is charity.  The difference between GIVING your money (and/or time)…and having your money (and/or time) TAKEN. Here is the Progressive “logic”:

  • People don’t donate enough to support all the “worthy causes”
  • The only way to ensure that all those “worthy causes” get enough money is to COMPEL people to “donate” to them!
  • The only form of compulsion the government has that can force “donations” is taxes
  • Therefore: taxes ARE charity!

No really…that’s the “logic”. Perhaps that’s one reason why Democrats routinely give dramatically less to charity than Republicans. Joe Biden, for example, has given less to charity in the last 10 years than I have…yet has financial assets at least 50 times mine (or more).

Consider this exchange from early in ‘A Christmas Carol’ between Scrooge and Mr. Howell, who is seeking a charitable contribution from him:

MR. HOWELL: At this festive season of the year, Mr. Scrooge, it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the poor and needy, who suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of basic needs; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, Sir.

SCROOGE (looking up): Are there no prisons? Did they disappear?

HOWELL: Oh, no, sir. There are still plenty of prisons.

SCROOGE: And the workhouses for the poor? Still in operation, I assume?

HOWELL: They are. Still, I wish I could say they were not.

SCROOGE: The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigor, then?

HOWELL: Yes, very busy, sir.

SCROOGE: Oh, well, I was afraid from what you had said that something had stopped them in their useful course.

JEEVES (Howell’s partner):  Given that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer to the multitude, a few of us are trying to raise a fund to buy the poor some meat and drink, and some means of warmth. …What shall I put you down for?

SCROOGE: Nothing.

JEEVES: Ah! You wish to be anonymous, then?

SCROOGE: I wish to be left alone. I don’t make merry myself at Christmas, and I can’t afford to make idle people merry. I am taxed for the institutions I have mentioned, and they cost enough.

Scrooge has no interest in donating…he considers his taxes to be donation enough. “Progressives” want to force people to pay high and higher taxes, so that THEY (the “Progressives”) can re-distribute that money “correctly”!  The government WANTS us to have nothing left to donate…nothing.  Neither time nor money.  They want everyone dependent on the Government, and everyone getting only want they need, while taking from them all that they can in the form of taxes.  “From each according to their ability, to each according to their need“.  And they want us feeling bitter about it, because that further divides us…leaving government as the only “refuge”.

Sen. Rand Paul has a question he asks people that pops this Leftist bubble brilliantly: “You have an extra $100, and want to do some good with it. Given these two choices, what would you choose: (a) send the $100 to the Federal Government or (b) send it to the Salvation Army??

Even an honest Democrat (they are thought to still exist in the wild) would admit that sending it to the U.S. government would be like flushing it down the toilet.

Tax Day was a couple days ago. Regardless of when you filed your taxes, did paying them make your heart swell up with human kindness, knowing all the “worthy causes” the government would put that money to? Nope.

Charity DOES make your heart grow, and IS good for the soul. Whether the donation is money or time, a little or a lot…if it is money (and/or time) that we GIVE, then it does let us feel just a little better about ourselves. Money (and/or time) taken at the point of a gun (or the IRS…same thing) just makes us feel used. (though it does ensure the GSA can continue to have kick-ass parties!)

The Obama Regime seeks to shut down every TRUE charity they can (churches, the Salvation Army, etc). Thus they are seeking to reduce or eliminate deductions for these from the tax code (but leave IN donations to “GreenPeace”, et al), seeking to close Catholic hospitals by forcing them to perform abortions, and putting pressure on hundreds of other charitable causes that don’t fit the “Progressive” mold.

At the end of ‘A Christmas Carol’ Ebenezer Scrooge seeks out Mr. Howell in order to make a donation (“with a good many back payments included”). He is now seeking to GIVE his own money (and later, his time) to help others…and is filled with the spirit of Christmas and humanity in the process. He has become a Conservative Republican.

Whether it’s a few coins dropped in a Salvation Army kettle, an offering in the collection plate on Saturday or Sunday, or just some freely given time or money donated to a cause you feel is worthy, charity is truly its own reward. Taxes taken under threat of penalty or prison are NOT “charity”…and only leave us feeling used, and bitter.

Charity is its own reward…and part of the Price of Freedom.

Thx Judy. I get sick unto death of hearing from “Progressives” that paying high and HIGHER taxes is not only our DUTY…but hey, it’s a form of charity!

Okay, pork belly prices have been dropping all morning, which means that everybody is waiting for it to hit rock bottom, so they can buy low. Which means that the people who own the pork belly contracts are saying, “Hey, we’re losing all our damn money, and Christmas is around the corner, and I ain’t gonna have no money to buy my son the G.I. Joe with the kung-fu grip! And my wife ain’t gonna f… my wife ain’t gonna make love to me if I got no money!” So they’re panicking right now, they’re screaming “SELL! SELL!” to get out before the price keeps dropping. They’re panicking out there right now, I can feel it.

thank you, darlin’…there are lots of links available of Dems saying: “Taxes ARE charity” But I didn’t wanna clutter the thread with ’em.

I heard Rand Paul say that yesterday (about what would you do with $100??). He is great (I wish his dad wasn’t nuts)

The Salvation Army has one of the highest (if not THE highest) returns on charitiable donations. Well into the 90% range goes to GOOD WORKS. Red Cross?…one of the WORST records!

“First and foremost, there are 46.5 million Americans in the program as of the most recent information available (January 2012), comprising 22.2 million households. That’s 15% of the entire population, and just over 20% of all households. Moreover, despite the end of the official “Great Recession” in June 2009, over 10 million more Americans have been accepted into the program since that month, and the year-over-year growth rate for the program is still +5%”

    Somewhat related to #10 –

If you don’t want to read the whole thing – In a nutshell:
“In other words: lower spending, more claims, but at least Obama’s dream of showing a lower, or even negative (yes, it is absolutely possible if the participation rate drops below 58%) unemployment rate will come true. Too bad 700,000 more people will be living in a cave to see the inauguration.”

I’d also add many of these 700k may be primed to take obama’s offer of more handouts.

Some of the same spoilers that interrupted the recovery in 2010 and 2011 have emerged again

If a recovery is interrupted in 2010 and 2011 then is it fair to claim there was any recovery underway?

You are BEGGING for Re-Education! Lord Obama says there was a recovery…so there was one. Then George W. Bush did “something” that derailed it…and now Obama needs to save us AGAIN (i.e., “bring us out of the darkness and into the light” …all over again!)

If they did this 4 years ago instead of Solyndra they’d be taking orders already, assuming of course DOE would be issuing permits to prospective US clients, even still others outside the US like China have interest. I’m less than thrilled that this is being partially funded (far as I tell it’s not a loan) by taxpayers nationwide but if DOE is going to give this money away better it be for something like this then the next solar flop.

    Great read:

    Money quote:

Watching President Obama stumble through his energy crisis, it seems only a question of whether he will end up channeling Jimmy Carter or President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner of Argentina.

The latter, in case you missed it, just announced that her government will be seizing a 51 percent interest in YPF, the Argentine subsidiary of Repsol, the Spanish conglomerate that is the 15th largest refiner in the world. In most places, that would be called theft, but in the banana republic of Argentina it’s just business as usual. In making her announcement, Fernandez de Kirchner stood directly beneath a wall-length portrait of Eva Peron haranguing the masses sometime back in the 1940s. It was an irony that nobody seemed to notice. Who knows, maybe there’s a Broadway musical in Cristina’s future.

What prompted the move by the President, who succeeded her husband in 2007, was that YPF, originally founded by the Argentine government in the 1920s and privatized in 1993, wasn’t producing enough oil. Why wasn’t it producing enough oil? Because the government has imposed price controls. And like price controls everywhere, they have discouraged production while encouraging overconsumption. As a result, Argentina has ended up importing expensive foreign oil despite large discoveries of shale oil in recent years.

This blast from the past can only remind us that one government intervention in the economy always leads to a bigger one and that, despite this sordid history, old leftist ideas never die. There will always be some demagogue telling us that the government can do a better job at running things than the people who know their business. Kirchner probably doesn’t know enough about oil to tell you the difference between a hydrocarbon and a carbohydrate but as a lawyer, she is sure that once she and her friends are running YSF, oil will gush forth like Moses striking the rock.

So that brings us back to our own Man of the People, President Obama, who is really only in the kindergarten of such retrograde policies but giving it a try. On Tuesday he stood in the Rose Garden flanked by his two apostles of freedom and justice, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Attorney General Eric Holder

Thisarticle just about says it all. Read all of it, please!!!

  22. 2012 April 20 12:49 pm

I read all of it and frankly that guy off base on suggesting a release of the SPR not to mention saying the 2011 release was not related entirely but politics. A run up in price alone is not a reason to touch the SPR. I also very much disagree with his justification of using the justice system (regardless of fairness) in order to just keep the peace.

While they sometimes screw up, religions (with the exception of Islam) have a pretty good overall record of helping mankind. For centuries, Catholic hospitals have treated patients without regard to creed, color, etc. Catholic schools have long accepted non-Catholics and about 10% of the average Catholic school body is comprised of non-Catholics. They do some mean things, however (e.g. not having a Muslim prayer room in every building at Georgetown University and placing crucifixes in classrooms just to annoy Muslims).

In recent years, the majority of nun’s have pretty much been a blight on the Catholic Church. Rather than following the roles of nuns in generations past (serving as teachers and nurses), the majority of nuns in 2012 are involved in left-wing social causes. The principal at my daughter’s Catholic high school was visibly pleased when the school’s only nun retired a few years back. As soon as the nun was out of the building, the principal disbanded the Amnesty International chapter the nun moderated.

It appears the Vatican is about to yank the chain on liberal U.S. nuns whose ideas often run counter to the Church’s teachings:
