Stop with the Democratic KoolAid

Michael Filozof over at American Thinker lays down a post called Bernanke Sucker-Punches Romney Campaign. As a political gambit it might be valid —

By announcing another massive economic stimulus program just weeks before the election, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke delivered a vicious sucker-punch to the Romney campaign and may have rigged the election in favor of Obama. But his actions will likely have disastrous consequences for the American public after the election is over.

So far, Romney has run a rather lackluster campaign, refusing to attack Barack Obama’s character and refusing to attack Obama’s radical past and associations with the likes of Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers. And Obama’s attempts to paint Romney as a heartless, greedy rich man have failed, as it has become increasingly clear that Romney is a genuinely caring, patriotic, and decent man.

Too decent, perhaps, to understand that his “Goody Two-Shoes” approach may not work against the cutthroat crew of Chicago pols in Washington. Romney, speaking honestly — but, perhaps, stupidly — announced that if elected President, he would not reappoint Bernanke as Chairman of the Fed when Bernanke’s term expires in 2014. Thus, Romney not only gave Bernanke a fixed date upon which he would become unemployed, he also gave Bernanke plenty of time and motivation to leverage the enormous power of the Fed against his campaign.

Bernanke’s gambit is designed almost entirely to undercut the main pillar of the Romney campaign: that the economy remains moribund and that Obama is unqualified and incompetent to fix it. On Thursday, Bernanke announced a third round of “quantitative easing,” which is simply an Orwellian euphemism for “printing money” — and the Fed has already printed about $2 trillion of it since 2009.

The Fed will also purchase mortgage-backed securities and Treasury debt to the tune of $40 billion per month – indefinitely – and keep interest rates at virtually zero until 2015.

But how effective will that be against the Romney campaign? I will suggest not one damn bit and here’s why —

  1. Timing. The next quarterly report is due out first week of October less than a month away. Does anybody really think that in 20 or so days the Fed buying MBS’s will affect the housing market that fast? It takes at least a month to have contracted housing show up in the Case-Schiller index. That puts it at the middle of November. THE ELECTION IS OVER BY THEN.
  2. Effectiveness. As I pointed out in a posting yesterday (, housing is in a generational funk. The only way that it will get out of it is if the Gen-X and Milleninal kids all the sudden landed $80k a year jobs and had the down payments in hand to buy. Likely to happen any time soon? Uner 20%. Back to timing again election wise.

But it goes deeper than just demographics. Each succesive easing (TARP, QE1, QE2) has had reduced effectiveness. That is in part because the second largest cost component, transportation, has been rising due to a falling dollar against foreign crude oil. So rather than priming the pump, Main Street is taking it in the shorts everytime the Fed devalues the USD.

  3. Opaqueness. Other than Pol Sci majors, economists and political junkies the balance of the country will be oblivious to the fact the Fed has even taken this action. Ma and Pa down on the farm will hear some blurb of about 30 seconds on the nightly news and that will be the end of it. By the time that Nov 6 comes on it won’t even be in their brain. What will be in their brain is the fact that diesel oil to run the farm is now $4.85 a gallon.

As to the aspects Mr. Filozof raises issues about Romney’s goody two shoes image. First of all he’s a little late to the party. Romney has in appropriate times laid into the man. But one has to walk a tight rope as the challenger on this. Too aggresive and many indpendents will consider it an attack on the office. Plus there will those that will take them as personal attacks. We would not have won them over anyway, but you don’t want to tick them off so that the Dims rally.

As a personal item, the move that Bernacke made was probably the worst of his career. His term is up soon. With a Romney in office you can be guaranteed he will be replaced.

Romney is going to win. But there are so many poison pills and poisonous fed employees being left behind it will take nothing short of the Lord’s intervention to prevent them from sabotaging Romney’s presidency. Once the markets know the money printing is over all hell will break loose….of course it will eventually anyway. The first three moves Romney should make are repeal Obamacare, suspend environmental regulations, fast track drilling permits, and lower Corporate taxes. Okay, the first four things he should do.

I don’t care what his views are on abortion or gay marriage – he’s not out advocating for these issues from what I can tell – he just answered an interview question on it from what I can tell. I agree with Bruce – he totally dissed Obama in a very funny way, and if he added a few votes for Romney, then more power to him. Plus, Gunny Highway was a total badass!

I expect many union types will vote for Romney in Wisconsin and elsewhere without being willing to tell their friends and associates. This is a hidden voting block Romney will have in November. I also think there is another block that will not tell pollsters that they will vote against Obama or think unfavorably of him. This Administration is so full of thugs that people are rightly a bit scared of them. I still look for a big Romney win that has the pollsters scratching their heads.

I agree bruce. And the other thing the left isn’t taking into account is that conservatives welcome these issues being forced to SCOTUS. Let’s settle some of these issues once and for all, i.e. voter ID upheld in Indiana case has forced the DOJ to back down in TX and now FL. I know with the HC ruling that is a little more shaky, but our issues are usually on solid ground. SCOTUS is the be=iggest reason Obama has to go. This morning they showed the following ad for the first time (that I know of) here in Ohio.

This is hard hitting with the blue collar types. Back in 2008, Obama & Hillary went back and forth on trade & jobs here in Ohio & Pennsylvania.

I believe that the election is moving towards Romney. The MSM was harping about Obama vs Romney on foreign policy and that just went up in smoke.

drdog – I agree with you about QE3. Not going to do anything. Might cause the stock market to move up a little. BUT business (particularly small business) is not going to do any hiring until after the election. And if Obama is re-elected, I can see more layoffs.

We may not like the way Romney is running his campaign BUT he has a narrow path. Too aggressive and he is a racist (is any way according to the MSM & Democrats). Too passive and he is John McCain – loser. The more negative OBama goes while Romney keeps his clean cut image just reinforces to the undecideds what a THUG Obama is.

The outcry would be deafening, even from those folks who loathe the Obamas.”

I’ve heard of threads going astray, but after waking this morning and seeing this one . . . . whoa.

I had a bad feeling about yesterday – anything that happens in the Muslim world before a Friday only gets worse after “Friday services” at the local mosque/incitement center. What I find ironic is the movie-maker pointing out the rage of the Muslims-being-enraged-for-being-insulted in the film resulted in Muslims being enraged for being insulted in real life. All are pointing the finger at the film maker instead of dealing with the reaction of the Muslim world.

While listening to talk radio yesterday morning, someone made an interesting point (granted, I’ve never seen the movie): the scenario with the Muslims’ reaction to the movie can be paralleled with the movie “Encino Man” where a prehistoric individual is thrust into the 20th century – how does he deal with modern society when all he knows is cave-man behavior?

Furthermore, for certain news outlets to exclaim ” How can one expect ‘Orthodox Muslims’ (new term, folks) not to be offended and react is unreasonable” is laughable at best.

    This is madness.
