Thomas Sowell Blasts “Me Too” Republicans

2013 March 27
by bc3b

Dr. Thomas Sowell, a leading black conservative, discusses the direction the GOP establishment wants to take the party, using ideas that have failed in the past and new ones that are likely to fail. While he doesn’t specifically say so, Dr. Sowell appears to believe the study started by drawing the conslusions and worked its way back from there.

Many ideas presented as “new” are just rehashes of old ideas that have been tried before — and have failed before. So it is no surprise that the recent “Growth and Opportunity Project” report to the Republican National Committee is a classic example of what previous generations called “Me too” Republicanism.

These are Republicans who think that the key to winning elections is to do more of what the Democrats are doing. In effect, they say “me too” on issues such as immigration, in hopes of gaining more new votes than they lose by betraying their existing supporters.

In the wake of last year’s presidential election debacle for the Republicans, the explanation preferred by “moderate” Republicans has been that the GOP has been too narrowly ideological, and needs to reach out to minorities, women and young people, rather than just to conservatives.

In the words of the “Growth and Opportunity Project,” the problem is that conservative Republican candidates have been “driving around in circles on an ideological cul-de-sac.”

But the report itself says that the Republicans’ election problems have been at the national level, not at the state level, where a majority of the governors are Republicans. Are the Republican moderates suggesting that the reason Mitt Romney lost in 2012 is that he was driving around in a conservative cul-de-sac? Romney was as mushy a moderate as Senator John McCain was before him — and as many other Republican losers in presidential elections have been, going all the way back to the 1940s. The only Republican candidate who might fit the charge of being a complete conservative was Ronald Reagan, who won two landslide elections.

The report to the Republican National Committee is on firmer ground when it says that national Republican candidates have not articulated their case very well — that “we too often sound like bookkeepers.” Republican candidates “need to do a better job talking in normal, people-oriented terms.”

Absolutely. It doesn’t matter how good your case is, if you don’t bother to articulate it so that voters understand you.

The heart of the report, however, is the argument that Republicans need to reach out to minorities, women and young people. With Hispanics and blacks becoming a growing proportion of the American population — and both groups voting overwhelmingly for Democrats — the Republicans are obviously in big trouble in future elections if they don’t do something.

But if they do what this report advocates, they could be in even bigger trouble. Here again, facts seem to mean nothing to those who wrote this report.

4m Republicans are estimated to have stayed home. Now you can enlist all sorts of factors as to the cause — mushy candidate, ORCA being a disaster, bad consulting, etc — but the fact is the culmination of all these was the margin of loss for Romney. Give this country a candidate that has a positive message with a clear distinction from the Dims and that person will win.

Go with Dim-Lite and the GOPer will lose every time. Why go for the fake when I can have the real socialist behind the other door?

By the way, I heard on the radio today one of the `me-too` senators, McVain, is touring the border with a bunch of his buddies today. Add in photo-op and press release and CIR is a done deal. I am starting to feel sick….

    Well ok KH, relapse. 🙂

By the way anybody up for some skullduggery?? Looks to me that there is opportunity here — Like we partner with a Cyprus business, create a bunch of fake employees, run payroll for a couple of months as legal transfers then close it down. We get 50% for the trouble. No different from the fake docs most of the illegals are using….

4 – We can even send out Nigerian like spam to everyone in Cyprus, I hear spamhaus is kind of busy at the moment! 🙂 I like it!

Also amusing. Black panthers ok… black pride ok… white panthers -> racist, white pride -> racist hate group.

Add to that the fact that Romney stopped fighting after winning the first debate. My guess is that the consultants advised Mitt to take it easy on Obama and act Presidential so that he could minimize hard feelings and opposition from Democrats during his Presidency (which never occurred).

Had he invited Sarah Palin to speak at the convention some of the 4 million who sat home might have voted. As Ted Cruz has said, Palin still has the ability to excite conservatives.

bc3b…agree COMPLETELY with your comment #6!

Romney used the McCain “Strategy”: be nice, and gentlemanly…since it worked so well for McCain. Thus even as the Democrats were savaging HIM, HIS WIFE, and everything Conservative…Romney stayed “above it all”.

Despite not agreeing with Rand Paul on every issue…I believe that he, Ted Cruz and maybe Mike Lee (and one or two more) are the only GOP politicians right now willing to stand up for something. And willing to stand up to the media, and shove their BS down their throats!

Will the GOP End Up JC Penney Under Ron Johnson?

JC Penney had long been the store where middle class Americans shopped. JC Penney brought in Ron Johnson from Apple. Johnson made major changes that riled JC Penney’s traditional customet base. It re-priced merchandise (“fair and square” everyday pricing)and stopped having sales. It hired Ellen DeGeneres as its spokesperson and started featuring advertising designed to appeal to gays and lesbians (who typically wouldn’t be caught dead at JC Penney).

The result: A 32% drop in sales and a billion dollar loss in 2012.

Doesn’t it appear the RNC is following the JC Penney blueprint for success: alienate your loyal base and chase after a demographic that never will “buy” your product?

One issue could save the GOPers a$$ in 2014 — Obamacare. The bill is being reveiled — 32% increase nationwide based on insurance industry estimates. Some states will see nearly an 80% rise in their rates! Now that would make a great campaign issue. But GOPers won’t because the consultants will deem it `too devisive` of an issue to appeal to the broad base of voters (eg Hispanic who will be causing the rise in rates.)

GOP is already dead if they pass this up.

KH, this should have been the first clue — “However, good things don’t last and as higher ups decided that Support was way too happy, decided to dispose of our erstwhile leader, much to the cue of “Oh Captain My Captain” upon his departure.” When management has made that decision your next superior is always an AH. The continuing overature being ‘beatings shall continue till morale degrades even further….’

One of my rules of IT are — ‘Do not take the cubicle next to the VP if you desire a home life.’ Any sufficiently big company always operates by the theory of Management by Proximity.

I have 13 rules and 12 Corollaries if you are interested.

“Ideology is theory, theory is thinking, and labels are our tools to construct proper theory. The man who wants to erect a government and oversee society without thinking and labeling is a thug or a fool, or both.

The choice before us is not ideology or no ideology! It is which ideology do we employ? Socialism or capitalism? Collectivism or individualism? Statism or freedom? Liberalism or conservatism or libertarianism?

The collectivist ideology (along with its welfarist variants) has ruled the world since the early twentieth century, and its brutal irrationality is directly responsible for the tyranny that prevails over three-quarters of the globe. It is time to restore the only rational ideology that exists – laissez-faire capitalism. The socialists and the liberals have had their chance, and they have failed.

Libertarians and true conservatives advocate laissez-faire capitalism. Liberals and neo-conservatives advocate authoritarian statism. Freedom cannot be defended without identifying the essentials of these ideologies and the intellectuals and politicians who advocate them. Without political-philosophical-moral clarity, tyranny wins.

Modern day tyrants want a vague pragmatism that is not defined (i.e., labeled) as to what it is. In this way, they can violate our rights and say that they are only implementing necessary policy for the emergency of the moment, or the good of the group, or to serve the will of the people. They can seek arbitrary, unfettered power and feel justified in doing so. Freedom demands clear labels and rational ideology. Never let the statist mentalities take these intellectual tools away from you.”

I would say “beans & bullets”, BUT there aint any bullets to be had. So go for the beans.

At this point – “it is over” – we just don’t know it. Wont matter what the GOP does or even what the Democrats do. Stick a for in us – we are done.

What is happening in Europe is precursor of what is to come here BUT worse. Politicians will tell us anything and everything BUT they wont tell us the truth. They wont tell us the HARD work we ALL need to do to right this ship. Instead – to quote JR – “Rainbows, sunshine, lolypops and unicorns”.

Best you can do is prepare to ride it out. I don’t expect a whole lot to make it as they don’t have the grit and determination to make it out. Look at the pictures of those depression era people vs today’s Walmart people – can not believe they are of the same stock.

Be interesting to sit in on the questioning of these 3 guys and find out who if anyone they were being directed by if not just trying to cause more chaos for laughs, I’m guessing some anti-westernization radical group. I’m not sure if I was the Egyptian navy that I’d want this story out there, gives people with nothing better to do ideas, and after all it’s really not *that* hard to screw with these pipes if you know where they are and have the right equipment (or munitions). As if on queue…

Russia to ban cash payments above 10k, ban cash payments for salaries for anyone but very small businesses.

“Russia may ban cash payments for purchases of more than 300,000 rubles (around $10,000) starting in 2015. The move is expected to boost banks’ cash reserves and put a damper on Russia’s shadow economy. However, the middle class will most likely end up having to pay the price for the scheme.
The restrictions on cash transactions will develop in two phases. In 2014, a ban on cash payments for purchases worth more than 600,000 rubles (about $19,500) will be introduced; the limit will then be halved to 300,000 rubles in 2015. Furthermore, the document introduces mandatory, cash-free, salary payments.

Smaller companies with fewer than 35 employees will be the only exception, and trade companies will be able to pay salaries in cash if they employ no more than 20 people on staff.
