If I Do Sushi, Do You Do Sushi?

2013 July 19

In recent months, some fast food workers have been staging walk outs, complaining of low pay and the lack of benefits.

But a new trend suggests that they may face competition that doesn’t care what hours they work, or what they’re paid.

Fast food chains in Japan, China and Great Britain have begun piloting the use of robots to cook meals. And while robots have been emerging in recent years as a boon for completing menial tasks like dispensing medicines in hospitals, these fast food robots are capable of preparing full sushi rolls or noodle dishes for Asian food outlets. In many cases, customers complete their orders through a touchscreen, which then alerts the robot how to prepare the meal. No humans needed.

It stands to reason that American fast food companies will adopt the robots at some point. One new fast food robot is the noodle-slicing “Chef Cui” in China, which as the Associated Press reports, costs restauranteurs 30,000 Chinese Yuan to buy, or $2,000. Comparatively, a human noodle chef is paid about $4,700 a year in China, according to the AP.

The first simple observation is `do the numbers`. If you do it should scare you. The social implications —

  • Menial repetitive labor will simply disappear. If the employer can so structure his physical plant in a stationary manner then flipping burgers, remaking beds in hotels, dispensing pills in hospitals disappear. Along with that a massive need for cheap labor. So why are we legalizing 40m illegals again??
  • Further development could see ag automation that picks fruits quicker and cheaper than manual labor. So why are we legalizing 40m illegals again??
  • How do we as a society get the kids onto that first rung of the ladder is all the entry level type positions are now done by robots?

More depression here.

The view from the MoT will be quite interesting!

    Dear drdog,

The Ministry of Truth is glad you asked!

First, on the topic of “Menial repetitive labor“, we simply say: “Ick!” All three of those words suck, and so naturally Lord Obama wants to shield our youth from such words (and the icky things they represent). That’s why he, in his awesomeness, wants our youth to focus on more important things like “social skills” (i.e., hanging out and chilling), “motor skills” (i.e., texting, X-Box, etc), and “being a good citizen” (i.e., doing whatever Lord Obama says). These will prepare our youth for their roll in the New Amerika: Flash Mobs on Demand Engaged Citizenry! By harnessing the power of our youth in this way Lord Obama will be able to ensure that he can intimidate educate others! Forward!!!

Second, on the topic of Detroit…well, we’re out of time. Darn.

    Dear IP,

Your question: “Will hut 1369 have it’s own robotic crapper cleaner??” was obviously in jest! As you know, the purpose of our Concentration Camps Re-Education Facilities is to, well, re-educate! And we have found through careful research that almost nothing is quite as effective as having our inmates patrons get down on their hands and knees and clean the waste-disposal facilities with their bare hands!

It’s so “back to nature”…and it truly focuses their attention on what their true worth is to Lord Obama, and makes them more receptive to brainwashing renewing their bond with Lord Obama!

7, Yes, but the job will be labelled `organic sanitation engineer`. That way, once you have been rehabilitated at The Hut you can pull down a low five figure salary and say “Yes Mam, No Mam” to your politically connected betters. Can’t have rehabilitation without a low wage task to go with it. All Hail Obama!

“We need a constitutional amendment for machine rights!” 🙂

Joking aside, the future is bleak on this type of labor. Yeah it’ll never entirely go away, this and similar type of labor will be needed on the factory floor of the factory that makes the robots who make then go on to feed the supply chain that make the other robots who then go on to make the bigger robots, and there are a some things that just can’t be\should not be replaced by a robot no matter how intelligent but in the end that’s only so many jobs available on the lower end of the scale.

Am I worried in the next 10 years, no techs gotta mature quite a bit and other disasters always loom, but by say ~2025’ish I can’t see how it will not be replacing those types of jobs at a good pace and tech will likely have advanced another generation where it will be considered for replacing people higher up the wage scale in areas that don’t involve much daily creativity. If it can be programmed (or every very close) you can bet it will be. In the last 500+ or so years in general every wave of automation\advancement has for the most part been offset by creation or enabling of other available slots in either existing or newly opened area’s at 1:1 or higher rate, and that’s been a great thing and has enabled the growth of the human race. But can that last forever?

Assuming some unknown unknowns (thanks rummy) I think that it’s a better bet then not that it will continue to be true for “awhile” longer but can it last for another 1000 years or eternity?

I don’t think so, at least not without say a massively disruptive event like finding some type of effectively free practically unlimited energy source (just an example, FTL travel might be another such unrealistic example, benevolent aliens from space swinging by dropping off some other such tech would be yet another ha ha). I think at some point in the far off automated+robotic future you hit a wall in the global need for human labor, my only question is that before you hit the wall in supportable people on the planet? If so then it’s not really something to worry about I guess, if not then the far off future looks pretty ugly unless you’re in the employed minority at that point or the world sees this coming and limits global reproduction to effectively match need and that’s not exactly a pretty picture either but more likely where we’re headed.

It goes without saying I’m sort of ignoring some of the other lingering problems US and worldwide that probably happen b4 the above does that could throw us back to say a 1900’ish world.

So am I just crazy off base and a pessimist or what? I curious what others think about the eventual outcome of tech progression on the long end visa-vi “employment” and population, or at least as we think of employment in today’s terms.

The up-scalling of job slots will continue for quite some time. But there is a hitch. We are just about at the cusp of tech out pacing the ability of a human to adapt to the changing tech/biz requirements.

Currently you can go to school, get trained and maybe if you are lucky that exposure will last a decade. So it takes you 3-4 yrs training for 10yrs employment. At the end of that time you retool again.

The future will be quite different. The human still spends 3-4yrs training for a job that may last 3 years or less. The cycle tightening till you reach a point that the time it takes a human to learn a skill it is almost obsolete before they have the cert. Then the human has to consider skill set skipping. Can they keep up? Then there is the other question of ROI for the upfront cost being more than the short term return while in the field. The programmable robo-machine just takes another download and some other robots attach some new do-dads and they are off and running.

That point where ROI is result negative for degree/training is the Singularity for the educational establishment. And its coming.

“When Trayvon Martin was first shot, I said this could’ve been my son. Another way of saying that is, a Trayvon Martin could’ve been me 35 years ago. When you think about why, in the African American community at least, there’s a lot of pain around what happened, I think it’s important to recognize that the African American community is looking at this issue through a set of experiences and a history that doesn’t go away.” — Obama

I have been blogging on many sites, with lots of you folks. I don’t believe I have ever referred to Obama as black. I don’t like his liberal policies. I don’t like his liberal appointees. I don’t like his non existent foreign policy.

But until today, I really never considered his race. I have really never thought of him as a black President, until today.

He has now separated himself from all other races in this country. Now I will refer to him as the Black President of the United States. Or instead Of “The Resident”, I will now refer to him as “The Black Resident”.

IP & drdog, the last Republican Mayor of Detroit was Louis C. Miriani. He served from 1957 to 1961, when he was defeated for reelection by Jerome Cavanagh in an upset fueled largely by African-American support for Cavanagh.

And every Mayor since then has been a Democrat elected because the African-American community slavishly supports whichever Democrat is put forward.

And the result is the photo-essay IP posted.
