So when healthcare costs for a school district rise, who pays? For most districts, salaries and benefits account for the majority of the operational budget. In our case, these costs are approximately 86% of the entire budget, leaving only 14% for instructional materials, technology, transportation, training, and general operations (electricity, water, etc.). The increased healthcare costs must therefore come either from reducing expenses from the 14% category, increasing deductibles and premiums, reducing reimbursement percentages, reducing teacher salaries, eliminating raises, or even eliminating teaching positions. Perhaps the money could come from increased property taxes. Of course, tax increases are the real “common core” of Obamacare.

Wherever the money comes from, the negative effect on education will be evident. I wonder if teachers and their unions who supported this president or his signature “accomplishment” have ever thought it through? I wonder how these teachers and their unions will feel when school districts across this country are forced to pass these healthcare cost increases, mandated by their votes, back to them? And I wonder how new education graduates, who will be unemployed as a result of the financial burdens caused by Obamacare, will feel after 4 to 5 years of college with no job to show for it?

Source

This is a case of `I told you so` is really insufficient. No the NEA has NOT thought the whole impact of Obamacare thru. Have not even scratched the surface of what it is going to do to them. The article lays out some early impacts but here are a few more —

  • Even more `administatraion` to comply with reporting and compliance.
  • If a district was tettering on the edge of eliminating non core activities, Obamacare will push them over the edge.
  • Taxes will go up. For most homeowners school taxes are the biggest part of their real estate taxes. It just got bigger.

But I saved the best for last. Obamacare will eliminate high school football. How? By simple edict. Are we foolish enough to think that the HHS will not at some point develop a “dangerous activities list”? If they are true to desire to bend the cost curve then sure they will. You can fully expect that list will include skydiving, scuba diving, race car activities, and of course football.

What a wonderful world.

Coincidentally (not) there is a renewed push to throw out Prop 13 out here. Prop 13…passed in 1978…is still considered the Boogie Man, and blamed for damn near every ill. The Left can’t raise Real Estate taxes quickly as long as it is in place…and thus they are increasingly desperate to overturn it.

IF they get it overturned (35 years after the fact) then they will quickly raise taxes…crush Calif Real Estate…and further destroy the Calif economy (we still have the 2nd or 3rd highest unemployment). But again…to the Left they are FEATURES…not “bugs”.

    Step 1 of re-modeling: Demolition!

Unfortunately we don’t have a prop 33 here in Texas. We will end up with a mixed bag. Some districts will just pass on the rates others will figure out ways to eat the costs. But it is clear that the political class is incapable of managing things economic or otherwise. I think the Founders understood that from the get go.

hey drdog…this goes along perfectly with the title of your Post:

In the movie ‘Stalag 17’ a POW gets a letter from his wife saying she has just given birth to their son…and the son looks “just like you”! Problem? The man has been imprisoned for 2 years. At the end of this clip he is seen muttering his response (pretty much what the media says to ANYTHING Obama says).

I stopped by the Chevrolet Dealership yesterday, for a look at

the new 2013 Silverado 1500 pickup. Just for fun, I took it out for a test drive. I wanted to sense that new “feel” before they become extinct. The salesman (a black man wearing an Obama “change” lapel pin) sat in the passenger seat describing the truck and all its “wonderful” options. The seats were of particular interest. He explained that the seats directed warm air to your butt in the winter and directed cool air to your butt in the summer heat. Feeling like messing with him, I mentioned that this must be a Republican truck. Looking a bit angry, he asked why I thought it was a Republican truck. I explained that if it were an Obama truck, the seats would blow smoke up your ass year-round. I had to walk back to the dealership. Damn guy had no sense of humor

JR, with such fiscal alchemy being performed it would seem possible to manipulate the numbers to show that the country is debt free.

Of course we are debt free, after all we owe it to ourselves, we will never foreclose on ourselves. The never ending daisy chain of a multitude of pauls robbing peters ad infinitum.

My wife is an educational paraprofessional (aka teacher’s aide) and a not-so-proud member of the Michigan Education Association. Every year she receives a benefits statement from the school district and her benefits are worth more than her salary. She only makes about $18k in salary.

Most of the educational paraprofessionals work primarily for benefits rather than salary and their husbands are self-employed. We used to joke that she worked for the public schools so we could afford to send our kids to Catholic school. In reality, we weren’t joking. Lots of public school teachers send their kids to Catholic schools.

The district privatized school bus drivers, cafeteria workers and janitors prior to the 2012-2013 school year.

The newer paraprofessionals all have been hired on a part-time basis/no benefits. My wife has been doing this for about 15 years and is lucky in that she works at the poorest school in a upper middle class suburb; all the elementary school kids from the three “trailer parks” in the district are all bussed to her school – it has the largest percentage of Hispanics of the district’s 9 elementaries (11%). She’s actually a “junior teacher” and works with kids that don’t speak much English, teaching them numbers, phonics, etc. Her hours have actually increased this year so maybe she can top $20k for the first time. I guess the district figures that since it’s paying benefits, it might as well give her as many hours as possible.

Even with the “trailer park” kids, the school has a 9 rating (10 being the highest) with Great Schools. Most of the district’s schools rate at 10.

So, in short drdog09, well run school districts are reacting the same way businesses are: reducing the number of full-time employees and outsourcing services wherever possible to avoid benefits. As you said, the amount my wife contributes for benefits has risen significantly and deductables have increased, but at least she has coverage.

    BC,

Not surprised at all about the cut backs.

And kudos to your SO for her efforts. It is tough teaching non-native english students of any age. She earns every penny and then some.

    drdog09 –

She has a great principal. What the district tries to do (although it would deny it all day long) is to segregate any elementary students for whom English is a second language at her school. Some kids are bussed past three other district schools to get to her’s. Then, within the school (at which 80%+ of the kids are normal students), they again segregate out any student who would slow the learning process in the typical classroom until they are ready to participate.

This is possible when 11% of the student population is Hispanic. It is not possible when the majority (or even 30%) of the students are Hispanic. This will be her third year at this school, but she actually enjoys it more than when she worked with the rich white kids although she has done things like buy underwear and socks for kids.

I went to the town hall Monday hosted by the Tea party for 2 local congressmen.

Glad to hear that they are for defunding Obamacare. The most startling revelation
was that one of the members, I think he sits on the ways and means committee believes the IRS scandal goes to the top of the treasury department and then to White house.

This first smoking gun theory I have heard out of an elected official.

You are on a horse, galloping at a constant speed.

On your right side is a sharp drop off.

And on your left side is an elephant traveling at the same speed as you.

Directly in front of you is another galloping horse but your horse is unable to overtake it.

Behind you is a lion running at the same speed as you and the horse in front of you.

What must you do to safely get out of this highly dangerous situation?
