“We hold these truths ….”

These days finding a truth can be a hard won thing the times being what they are. Even in their time, it was hard won —

* Franklin himself declared that July 2nd would be rejoiced in all the Colonies. Yet Congress itself affixed July 4th be reserved for that day.

* Even the John Trumbull painting that hangs in the US Rotunda is fake news if there ever was one. Eight of the Congressional delegates that had voted for the documents creation were away on official business when the document was brought forward for the official signing. The last man to sign the DoI was Thomas McKean of Delaware on August 2nd. All of whom appear in the painting!

* The DoI was not ‘officially’ signed until August 2nd where upon all 56 delegates affixed their signatures. Not only that but this was not even the original handwritten version penned by Jefferson but an engrossed copy on parchment. Jefferson’s Fair Copy which was forwarded to Congress and signed by Hancock and Thomson only, the ‘original’ copy approved by Congress on July 4th has never been found.

* That the Jefferson version and those finally approved by Congress differ radically in many respects.

Our society today make little of words like ‘honor’, ‘sacrifice’, ‘stand and deliver’. They are treated like markers in an advertising campaign. Nor should I suggest that men of the bygone era be much different. The 56 signators to the DoI KNEW what they were in for. The battles had been going on for nearly a year previous. To lose was to lose their heads as conspirators against the king. That being the gem that focuses the mind.

There is one line in the DoI that has been the cornerstone of the whole American experiment — “… that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” In the first case that the core of human freedom is outside of himself to limit and that his resorting to these rights are unassailable. In the latter case that he shall possess the breath to draw, the freedom of action and mind to express them as he sees fit. The very existence of these words to a Progressive are like a silver cross to a vampire, blasphemy.

So as we sally forth this Independence Day, remember that there have been other days of yore called Fake News. Just remember, Truth may not always win, but it will always arise in the end.

    Residents here have long backed a different proposal for a separate state, one that would be carved out of Northern California and the southern reaches of Oregon. Flags of the so-called State of Jefferson, which was first proposed in the 19th century, fly on farms and ranches around the region.

    Yes. Other than common American citizens what force exists in the world today that opposes authoritarian rule?
    Russia is under the thumb of unaccountable rule, China same. Europe ruled by Brussels. The UN is no friend of freedom.

    Disarmament of the US citizenry would appear to be a top priority.

    Jim, of the enemies you note in #5, the U.N. Is the greatest threat, IMHO.

    A greater threat than all the others combined. For the others (Russia, China, ISIS, etc) are at least perceived as threats. The U.N. is touted as the SOLUTION to the world’s ills…and the antidote to the nasty old U.S.A.

    All we have to do is surrender our freedoms to the New World Order, and everything will be fine.

    justrand, it may be arguable which to choose as a bigger threat between the UN, Russia, China.
    But ALL the BIGGEST threats are domestic, I think. The MSM, the Dem Party, educators, celebs, …
