Cruz Cruised on Broward’s Lax Standards
Truly a ‘Grape of Wrath’

Broward’s standards were so lax:

— Students can be considered first-time offenders even if they commit the same offenses year after year.

— The district’s claim of reforming bad behavior is exaggerated.

— Lenient discipline has an added PR benefit for the district: lower suspensions, expulsions and arrests along with rising graduation rates.

and …

Now, many teachers and parents say Broward has created a culture in which teachers are expressly told or subtly pressured not to send students to the administration for punishment so a school’s image is not tarnished.

Mary Fitzgerald taught for 37 years in the district before retiring from Sunrise Middle in Fort Lauderdale in 2016. She said she retired a year early due to her concerns about student discipline.

“It was so many things. I had three students bring knives to my classroom. One was out of the classroom for one day. Another had so many things on his record, he was gone for five days. None were expelled.”

Safety concerns at Sunrise were brought up at faculty meetings. “The message out there is that the students are untouchable. Habitual negative behavior means nothing anymore,” state the minutes of a Faculty Council meeting on Feb. 2, 2015.

“My principal basically would tell me it was his job to market the school. He was adamant about not looking bad,” Fitzgerald said.

What good is a ‘zero tolerance policy’ on gun violence if your institution is nothing but a breeding ground for violence in general? The gun is but an instrument for the crime is committed in the mind. A lax policy of not referring students of known proclivities merely leads those with the tendencies to think that there are no consequences.

A key problem with the Left is their inherent belief that everyone is good and that it is only bad circumstances that are the culprit. Some goes as far as to link that belief to Christian teachings which it is not. Judeo-Christian theology opines that there is Good AND Evil in each of us. We are not inherently Good and that to be so is the eternal struggle in our souls. I will strive for Good in life today but I must be vigilant.

The Left will never learn that lesson for they are predisposed to the belief that there is nothing larger in life than themselves.

The entire Broward board needs to be thrown in the trash and a new slate selected.

Public schools definitely have their problems. My daughter teaches third grade and has the worst kid in the school in her class. He has two lesbian parents and his natural mother was on drugs. He has been suspended numerous times and has even kicked the principal. Last week a police officer picked him up and carried him to his mother’s car. Bridget has put a number of notes in his permanent record, advising future teachers/administrators about his behavior as she fears he will only get worse.

There are 11 elementaries in her district and one has an area for behavioral problems (complete with a padded room), but there is a waiting list. And, her district is fairly upscale and rated #13 in Michigan.

Things have definitely changed. I attended public school through the eighth grade and paddlings were common. The shop teacher made paddles and even “p[inch hit” for women teachers.

I’m sure there are days when Bridget wishes she accepted the job with Our Lady of Refuge Catholic School for $10k less.

bc3b: my old buddy is a former Michigander so he has plenty of thick coats to break out. He turned into a leftie at some point. Or maybe we were all lefties but most of us saw the error of our ways and changed over time.
Hopefully Muskegon can help in a conversion/transition for him.

Since he’s on the western side of the state, he’s MI Conservative’s problem, not mine. My responsibility ends at Lansing.

The Robert Mueller dead cat bounce….

Democrats stand to make gains in the upcoming midterm elections — but their cockiness about winning sweeping victories has reportedly become more restrained in recent days, thanks to tightening generic ballot polling and improved presidential approval numbers. CNN’s newest national survey shows most Americans are pleased with the general state of the country, with Democrats’ 2018 advantage down to just three points (as opposed to 16 points in the same series several months ago). Reuters’ national data shows Democrats’ lead whittled down to one measly point, well within the margin of error. At the beginning of the year, ‘Chuck and Nancy’s’ party held a double digit average lead on the generic ballot, according to Real Clear Politics. That margin has now been chopped in half, to just under six percentage points.
