Did Russiagate Totally Destroy Media Credibility?

2019 March 31

It’s been a great ten days for the President: the Mueller Report, a rocking rally in Grand Rapids, charges against Jussie Smollett being dropped (which gives him more ammo) and Democrats (including those likely to oppose him in 2020) keep melting down.

But, perhaps the best thing for the President was an even further decline in Americans’ trust in the media.

As we’ve discussed many times at BJG, Americans’ distrust of the media started long before Donald Trump emerged on the national political scene. According to Gallup’s annual Media Trust Study, a majority of Americans have not said they trust the media since 2005. A Pew study released in 2010 showed a strong decline in CNN’s believability from 42% in 1998 to 29% in 2010.

But the Mueller findings may be the greatest blow to the media of all. CNN and MSNBC had non-stop Russiagate coverage for nearly three years. Russiagate was a staple of the “Alphabet Networks” evening news broadcast and shows like Today, Good Morning America and whatever CBS calls its morning program. Much like Covington Catholic and Jussie Smollett, the media gave so much coverage because the so badly wanted it to be true.

CNN ratings sank deeper than the Titanic since the Mueller results were announced. It alienated (and lost) its core audience and the tin foil hat brigade lost interest.

What now? Even honest members of the media (which excludes CNN’s Brian Stelter) are worried about how the media’s overzealous Russiagate coverage will sink the public’s trust even lower and how the President will use it as a club against the media.

The summary of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report – no collusion, no obstruction – was a “death blow” to the media’s credibility, the “journalistic equivalent of walking outside without pants,” according to Rolling Stone editor Matt Taibbi.

“In light of yesterday’s news, I’m releasing this last chapter of Hate Inc. early. WMD damaged the media’s reputation. Russiagate may have destroyed it,” Taibbi tweeted Saturday, teasing his blog post that rebuked “Russiagate” as “this generation’s WMD [weapons of mass destruction].

Russiagate may have destroyed it,” Taibbi tweeted Saturday, teasing his blog post that rebuked “Russiagate” as “this generation’s WMD [weapons of mass destruction].”

His missive argued the Iraq war call over weapons of mass destruction after 9/11 damaged the reputation of the media establishment, but the Russia colluding with President Donald Trump’s campaign relentless narrative has ostensibly “destroyed it.”

“[T]he investigation did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities,” Taibbi quoted as “the money line” from Attorney General William Barr’s letter summarizing Mueller’s exhaustive report on the investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election and allegations of potential Trump campaign coordination with a foreign power.

“The story hyped from the start was espionage: a secret relationship between the Trump campaign and Russian spooks who’d helped him win the election,” Taibbi wrote.

“The betrayal narrative was not reported as metaphor. It was not ‘Trump likes the Russians so much, he might as well be a spy for them.’ It was literal spying, treason, and election-fixing – crimes so severe, former NSA employee John Schindler told reporters, Trump ‘will die in jail.'”

After the long promised connections to a criminal conspiracy in the media being debunked this weekend, it will now take a leap of faith for Americans to believe anything accusatory of President Trump in the media, Taibbi concluded.

“Stories have been coming out for some time now hinting Mueller’s final report might leave audiences ‘disappointed,’ as if a president not being a foreign spy could somehow be bad news,” Taibbi wrote. “Openly using such language has, all along, been an indictment.

“Imagine how tone-deaf you’d have to be to not realize it makes you look bad, when news does not match audience expectations you raised. To be unaware of this is mind-boggling, the journalistic equivalent of walking outside without pants.

“. . . Of course, there won’t be such a reckoning. (There never is). But there should be. We broke every written and unwritten rule in pursuit of this story, starting with the prohibition on reporting things we can’t confirm.”

Rather than being apologetic for CNN’s obsessive coverage of Russiagate, over the weekend Brian Stelter and SE Cupp condemned FNC for not totally immersing itself. Caution: SE Cupp is not what you remember from five years (and 50 pounds) ago:

Is there anyone on cable TV sleazier than Stelter?

Well PBS Newhour went there, sans pants, yesterday. Scanning the channels yesterday I stopped on PBS and was transfixed for the next 5 minutes. They were doing a 2hr special on a recap of Russiagate like it was a fund raiser selling a Cat Stevens anthology record. I could not believe it. PBS was in as thick as MSNBC or CNN in beating that Russia drum.

Progs for all their supposed ‘diversity’ have a closed mind when it comes to politics.

There is another problem other than outlook. The Russiagate story has crowded everything else out of the public view. Like how about this: much of the midwest and plains region of the country has either had a subnormal late cold blast or is sitting under a million square miles of water. That translates to —

    * The corn crop ain’t coming in this year folks. What has been planted has been wiped out by a late frost and it is nearly too late to get a second planting in. The price of corn is going way up and considering how pervasive corn is in food stuffs of this country everything you eat is going to skyrocket.

    * Plains States ranchers have been stomped by the floods. Entire herds have been drowned and calfing won’t be for another 7 months. Would not be surprised to see beef prices double by late June. Which I guess balances out as there won’t be the corn for the CAFOs to fatten the cows anyway.

    * Potato crop will be delayed for the same reason the corn crop is gone.

This all thanks to global warming :(. Really we are experiencing a Maunder Minimum. Will get much worse in 2021, 2022. Personally I will be planting late variety stone fruits to adjust to the colder climate.

Forty years ago this information would have been the lede on the Huntley-Brinkley newscast. Now days it is not even mentioned, fly over country you see.

This concludes your farm market report.

Here’s another huge story the MSM will try to avoid:

A vast network of British Asian gang members linked to Abu Hamza and the 7/7 bombers infiltrated government agencies, defrauded taxpayers of billions of pounds, and funnelled tens of millions to Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda over 20 years, an investigation claims to have found.

From the article, which is very apropos to this post:

His [Hitler’s] primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.

    “WMD damaged the media’s reputation.”
We should note in passing that WMD was promoted by Clinton along with his fellow Dems and the foreign allies friendly to Dems (esp Europeans).
After the war started, Dems went 180 and the media got whiplash by violently agreeing with the Dem agenda.

RussiaGate is the same: media going whole-hog Dem agenda. It’s just that this time the agenda is a bald-faced lie and not a 180 policy shift.

3 – Yup, been rather amazed at the lack of MS coverage of flooding (with more likely to come), only place I’ve noticed it covered at all is ZH, weatherchannels, and oann(and even they only give a 2min piece\update but at least it’s covered). I’ve been trying to ignore some of the more ‘panic now’ ZH article in regard to that lately but I do find it hard to believe there isn’t going to be some fallout, coming particularly at a time when the US economy as whole really doesn’t need that sort of hit.

Yes it’s axed their credibility even more…. but honestly it doesn’t seem to matter too much, people respond in these polls that they don’t trust the news media, and then in the same poll usually indicate they’ve fallen for the news media bs in numbers that don’t seem to match. Repeat a lie long enough, and even if it’s lie, and the people know it’s a lie, seems they’ll still regurgitate it. Credibility stopped mattering at all, at least a decade ago, because among other things it’s largely disconnected from revenue at this point, and it only gets worse by the day.

    7 – exactly what I mean.
5 – Wish I could say I was surprise, gotta love the “British Asians” super extreme PC language there too.

Looks like Costco is no longer placing any re-orders for Roundup branded products, or apparently others that contain glyphosate-based herbicides, and may even be pulling existing stocks from the shelves in most stores this week.

I would not be surprised if by end of summer season HD and Loews join the club, fearing some sort of possible contrived legal exposure now that there are some decided cases and probably more on the way, something I think plays into coscos move more than some online petition pressure campaigns.

    Random thought…

Announce ALL asylum seeker will be flown\bused to CA and then loaded on boats to HI (or flown directly) where they will be ‘released’ till their 99.99% of time BS asylum hearing is had, as to ‘why’ because they’ll be easier to be found if they don’t show up, their islands after all, thus it at least limits the impact on the other 49 states.

Want to bet the two extremist senators from HI suddenly might be interested in some reforms? I would say to use CA\NY\MA etc targeting already ‘lost’ states (like obama dhs was doing targeting red states with daca people)…and spreading the burden\pain around to most D run strongholds who have helped cause this (not that R’s haven’t played their part too) but doing so would allow them freedom of moment we really should avoid from both a eventual collection\deportation standpoint, and a health hazard stand point. It also helps minimize illegal vote casting impact. It puts those on their way on notice, you’re not just going to be let to roam free around the country, and would limit the labor impact.

The down side is it would take the pressure off all the radicals (R and D alike) in congress and state legislators in the other 49, and I’m sure HI would turn into even more of disaster than it already is (yes it’s beautiful, but it’s also a bit of shithole imo underneath). Then again like NV got the short end of the stick on some matters, how could most of other 49 be against such a move when it actually helps their states?

On a scale of 1-10 of stupid ideas just how stupid and unworkable is this?

14 – Great in theory, in practice, those 30 second spots have to be approved for air by some of the very networks and\or platforms they’re going to be countering\attacking, anything really good will just be spiked\rejected. We’ve seen them do that before against some trump ads (even post campaign) they’ll do it again with full vigor this round. Second the network\platforms can just keep spewing BS… it’s basically free for them, while the counter (the ads\etc) they allow to run will be making them money, it’s then in their interest to talk shit just to trigger more counter ads to make more money for them.

13 – Sadly most of the downstream shit will probably go on unabated due to the commercial side of Bayer\Monto’s business, the retail side I’m reading is surprisingly tiny, something like only $180million in north America via the Roundup distribution license to scotts-miracle from Monto\Bayer. That sounds low give the amount of shelf space I always see taken up by Roundup though. That said I’m not saying it will not help around the margins and perhaps some local ecosystems. States totally banning on both sides would be bigger hit… something I’m sure they’re ‘working the system’ to ensure doesn’t happen, or doesn’t happen any time soon.

You’d have to think Bayer saw at least most of this coming before the purchase.

The Pew Research Center reveals in a new study that the U.S. has admitted more foreign nationals than any other country in the world. Roughly 18 percent of the world’s migrant population lives in the U.S., the study found.

About 44.5 million foreign-born residents now live in the U.S., far surpassing Germany’s 12.2 million foreign-born population and Russia’s nearly 12 million foreign-born population.

In total, the U.S. is home to more foreign-born residents than Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and France combined. The 44.5 million foreign-born population living in the country marks a nearly 108-year record high of immigration to the U.S.

The last time the U.S. foreign-born population was this high was in 1910 when immigrants made up 14.7 percent of the total country’s population.

Keep in mind this only studied legal immigration figures. JHC

Speaking of that guy, it reads like a whining child at times but it’s still interesting how WaPo appears at first reasonable (dispite the author’s opinion) ‘get at least one woman on the record before publishing’ to ultimately complicity in a cover\spiking for Fager. I find it interesting they insist on a couple people on the record for something like that, but anonymous sources talking about treason by the president…no problem, print it.

Maybe this woman can go investigate women and kids related to biden, it would keep her busy for at least a few months just collecting stories and comments given the shear amount of video out there, let alone other stories. I doubt we’ll see that though.

On I think a positive, but complicated, and probably only temporary front…

F-35 for Turks are now officially on hold. The support chain stuff that was supposed to start heading to turkey this spring ahead of the eventual air frames has officially been halted. No word yet if their other 2 air frames that were supposed to arrive in AZ this month for training their pilots will do so. They had till March 31st to take the PAC deal and drop the s400 or face this, glad to see we actually followed through. Personally I don’t think they ever should have been allowed access in the first place but that ship sailed long ago.

If we’re going kill this deal, then we better already be starting to source the components they build for it elsewhere because I don’t think they’re going to just piss away the billion plus moscow has already collected for the s-400 deal, and last thing we need are more production delays (even accounting for not having to build TK’s allotment).

Something tells me this would be the least of the short term problems should the closure include rail. Frankly don’t care if it does or not, it’s beyond time to close it. Put it on boat in Tijuana etc and ferry to san diego, lose a couple days, add more expense, for the most part ..so what. Maybe shippers can finally put all those ghost container ships to use for bit doing short 1 day hops. Step one is points of entry\crossings to all civilian traffic, step two commercial ‘nafta’ traffic, step 3.. rail.

step 4 …we cut the shit, declare mx a “terrorist narco state ” (which it is) and redeploy everyone from around to world to invade 1-5miles into mx and turn it into an occupied us\mx dmz of sorts to stop the invasion and threat, we DONT annex it. It’s still mexico we’re just doing never ending ‘counter terror operations’ you see..like everywhere else but for once related to our own god dam border and direct security. The media NEVER EVER uses the full description, seeming to feel that if they simply say “a heartbeat” it leaves open that there is some OTHER kind of heartbeat that could emanate from the womb of a HUMAN being.
