“A campus is not the place for free speech”

Not surprisingly. that bit of “wisdom” comes from an East Coast liberal arts college president.

President Trump recently signed a Presidential Order regarding freedom of speech on college campuses.

Unfortunately, there are college presidents, like David R. Harris, who oppose it because it doesn’t fit with their goal of political indoctrination.

By the way, Union College is located in Schenectady, New York. Tuition, fees, room and board amount to $68,000. Yet, it has a rather low (38%) acceptance rate, so students are anxious to join the 2,200 student body.

Who, in their right mind, would want to pay $68,000 attend a liberal arts college in Schenectady? Schenectady is the former home of General Electric. Its population peaked at 91,000 in 1950 and is 66,000 today. It has one of the highest per capita crime rates in the US. Only 56% of Schenectady high school students graduate. Yes, it’s a virtual paradise.

It’s amazing that over-priced, private liberal arts colleges like Union continue to exist. But, fast food chains and retailers need to get employees from somewhere.

Union College President David R. Harris recently penned an argument against free speech on college campuses, claiming that institutions of higher learning have a responsibility to manage speech by providing “constructive engagement,” so that students can have an optimal learning experience.

Union College president David R. Harris penned an op-ed, entitled, “A Campus Is Not the Place for Free Speech,” in which he argues that it is the role of colleges and universities to filter the conversations on campuses to provide “constructive engagement.”

“I oppose free speech on college campuses,” states Harris in his op-ed, “I think college campuses should be safe havens from voices on the left and right that violate what I have learned and what I believe.”

The college president had written his op-ed in response to President Donald Trump’s recent executive order requiring colleges and universities to uphold the First Amendment on campus in order to continue receiving federal research funding.

“Many of the president’s supporters have applauded his free speech decision,” states Harris, “because they argue that higher education institutions trumpet liberal perspectives and silence conservative voices.” Harris adds that members of academia believe “the president and his supporters do not understand what actually happens on college campuses.”

Harris also claims  in his op-ed that institutions of higher learning would only be managing speech on campus for students’ own good, suggesting that when left unchecked, free speech would not facilitate a productive learning experience, arguing that individuals will end up using speech irresponsibly when utilizing it in its “purest form”

“Free speech, in its purest form, is an exercise in what is achieved when a person yells a view and then leaves, after which someone with an opposing perspective does the same” states the college president, “The speakers do not grow as a result of the experience, and the audience has no opportunity to probe the opposing points of view.”

Harris also insists that he is a supporter of free speech, but just not when it comes to college campuses. On campuses, Harris says, “we must strive for something more than free speech.”

“It is not enough for individuals to speak freely,” continues Harris, adding that college students are already having more constructive and diverse interactions than “most adults,” claiming, “college campuses and social networks tend to be more diverse than ‘real world’ neighborhoods and social clubs.”

One could argue, however, that younger generations today seem to be less tolerant of everything from intellectually diverse conversations, to even lighthearted comedy skits.

One of the problems with defending free speech is you often have to defend people that you find to be outrageous and unpleasant and disgusting.

Yep, like the dipshit quoted in this post.

The mass exodus of R’s not seeking re-election in the last midterm comes a little more into the light. Bold is mine:

And then they released more heavily redacted State documents showing classified information was desperately sent to multiple U.S. Senators by the Obama administration immediately prior to President Donald Trump’s inauguration. The documents reveal that among those receiving the classified documents were Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD), and Sen. Robert Corker (R-TN).

drdog, Chicago only ranks down where it is because they consider the entire Chicago area. But the South side of Chicago is a nightly war-zone, which easily outpaces everywhere else.

again, the common denominator is long-term Democrat rule

The Detroit Thugs and Motown Muggers were sickened when they saw how Detroit fell in terms of crime. Two of the Muggers were in tears. They have vowed to correct this travesty.

Chicago’s west side is giving the south side a run for its money in terms of crime. The only safe places within the city are the north side and The Loop (unless you are Jussie Smollott).

Chicago also has a much larger illegal alien population than most other Midwest cities like Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, St. Louis, etc. Expect major turf battles between black and Hispanic gangs in a few years.

The perfect dem ticket~~~Biden/Beto. The elder gentleman appeals to the old school dems, the younger arm waving kennedyesque pseudo beaner appeals to the younger bomb throwers. A ticket made in hell. They fail to see that mixing shit ( Beto) with perceived ice cream (Biden) still doesn’t improve on the diversity milkshake.

I think I could have a little fun. I could be wrong but I assume the robot sees an empty shelf spot scans either the shelf tag or uses GPS and a data table to place the reorder. So what would happen to WallyWorlds inventory if customers walked in and just shifted product over one spot on the shelf? Or down a row to fill the blank spot but leave a new blank causing reorder. Might be as much fun as eating Tide pods.

    Drdog, in re. #26 above…

At least once a week the A/P, NYT, CNN or other fake news outlet comes out with story of a “Republican” who sadly laments: “the Republican Party left ME, I didn’t leave THEM”.

Ah gee…so sad. They never get around to telling us what the “final straw” was. Was it:
    – when Republicans vehemently opposed the “new” Democrat support for UNLIMITED abortion up to and INCLUDING birth?
    – when Republicans (okay, Trump) tried to wake the nation up the REAL CRISIS at our Southern Border and [gasp] vowed to DEFEND our country?
    – when Republicans tried to oppose the Obamacare mandate that nuns must hand out abortifacients, and MEN must be allowed to shower with little girls?
    – or when Republicans declared the Bill of Rights to be INVIOLATE…and thus not subject to the whims of Leftist “judges”

    I’d sure like to know
