What Happened to Our Once-Great Cities?
President Trump created a firestorm with his comments about Baltimore. But you can insert dozens of other cities in place of Baltimore – Detroit, Cleveland, Newark, Flint, Philadelphia, Columbus, Milwaukee, Memphis, St. Louis, Dallas, Los Angeles and Camden to name but a few.
They were all once great cities – with safe, livable, clean neighborhoods, good schools. Citizens cared and they took responsibility. Because they didn’t leave garbage lying around most neighborhoods were rodent-free. People were happy with their lives. Most didn’t think about fleeing to the suburbs. They identified with their neighborhood, their church and local schools.
In the 1960s everything changed. There were riots, starting in Detroit and spreading to many other major cities. In addition federal courts mandated busing to achieve immigration. Cities like Pontiac went from 70% white/30% black to 20% white/80% black almost overnight. Within 10-15 years there was a definite change. What had been a safe, clean neighborhood took on the appearance of a slum. Crime rose. The neighborhood became rat-infested. Schools went quickly downhill.
Few neighborhoods made as drastic a change as my old high school neighborhood. It was very middle-class (mostly Polish), safe, clean. About three miles away was a middle class black neighborhood – mostly two-parent families that took responsibility for their lives and their neighborhood. Their goals were the same as white middle class families – making sure their children had the tools to succeed in life.
Today my old high school neighborhood is the third most dangerous Zip Code in the entire United States.
The government’s solution was the same in the 1960s as it is today – throw money at the problem with Model Cities and other programs. Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society made it possible for men to father children with multiple women and never take responsibility because of welfare.
There never was any talk about taking responsibility for the neighborhood just as there is never any talk about taking responsibility for children that you father. Anyone doing that would be labeled as racissst by the left, just as President Trump is being labeled.
Donald Trump isn’t known for political correctness. As he often does, he lays things out for everyone to see and says what no other government official will say. We have pumped trillions into federal programs and nothing changes. With his position of power, Elijah Cummings has pumped billions into the Baltimore area and no one has really benefited (except his and his wife’s cronies).
The left always wants to have a discussion on race. The problem is that their idea of a discussion is for working class Americans being preached to – no discussion of root problems and real solutions.
If the Poles, Italians or Chinese lived a lifestyle where 72 percent of babies were born out of wedlock with “dad” taking off, high drop out rates and high crime eight generations after coming to the US, would they enjoy equality today?

I think its a combination of Democrats and a change in the cities’ inhabitants – people who cared and took responsibility versus those that don’t.
When I went to high school the greatest danger was being chased by an elderly Polish lady with a rake if you cut across her perfectly manicured lawn.
There is an area near the University of Detroit that is every bit as immaculate as it was 40 years ago. The residents care and take responsibility. They send their children to Gesu Catholic even if they aren’t Catholic.

The problem comes right out of economics — “Bad money drives out Good money.” Just substitute people in that concept and you have the same sort of results. There is one other minor addition — Interstate system.
Prior to the interstate system road architecture fostered people to be close to the city core where they worked. Once the ‘I’ ways penetrated the cities it was possible to move to the exurbs with a reasonable commute time. It tighten further once the beltways around the cities were constructed. Those beltways acted like moats, inside was ‘the city’, outside where people wanted to live in the burbs.

Who knows if it was really a legit sort of study but anyone that’s ever played cities:skylines or older simcity4 (glorified traffic simulators – but fun) knows how just a few fkups in the right spot can ripple and cripple a city in short order. Definitely don’t need 20% to do damage.
