Media Hypocrisy at its Finest/Worst

2019 September 25
by bc3b

A story breaking yesterday involves the hypocrisy of the Des Moines Register, a hard-core liberal paper in the heartland.

It also involves Carson King, a 24 year old who held a sign soliciting “beer money” at an ESPN pre-game show September 14. To his surprise, people actually started donating money online. King, being somewhat embarrassed, decided to donate the money to the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. When he announced that, it went viral and the money really started pouring in. Over $1.5 million was raised for the children’s hospital.

See the source image

Can’t say much for his choice of beers.

The Des Moines Register decided to do a feature story on King. A woke young reporter – Aaron Calvin – did an in-depth dive, even looking at King’s social media accounts, going back eight years when he was in high school. To his shock, the reporter discovered that King made two racist tweets when he was 16.

The Register’s executive editor, Carol Hunter,  claims that the editorial decision was made to include the tweets in the story because it was the “public’s right to know.” She publicly defended the decision.

Then those damn bloggers started looking into reporter Aaron Calvin’s social media history and found a far worse trail of racist, sexist, homophobic, anti-police tweets Calvin made when he was far older than 16.

To make a long story short, Calvin, Hunter and the Register are caught in a firestorm. People are condemning the Register and canceling subscriptions. Calvin is obviously DOA with a not-so-promising career coming to a screeching halt and Hunter will hopefully be moving out of the executive suite and into an assisted living facility.

And, the media wants to know why the majority of Americans consider it an enemy?

Start packing those boxes Carol. It’s time for the big move to Shady Rest Acres. Don’t forget your Poligrip.

What do some tweets made at age 16 have to do with this story?

Shades of Covington Catholic – the media attempts to ruin a young man’s life to advance its agenda. Also, like this, it was conservative bloggers who discovered the media’s heroic Indian never served in Nam and had a general discharge from the Marines.

I love stories with a happy ending. I can’t wait for this one to play out.

I just read about this earlier today.
Has the reporter lost his job? (Please say yes!)

The paper officially claims it is “under investigation.” He’s only been with the paper 7 months, so he’s as good as gone. But, who is more at fault: the reporter who wrote the story or the editor(s) who approved it?

Based on this post two observations:

    * We Boomers are probably the last generation that can keep our skeletons hidden. Just remember to hide the damn HS yearbook. (re: Kavanaugh)
    * Your kids and theirs are swimming in a fishbowl these days. Which is kind of sad. First, everybody has something to hide and for the most part never rises to a felony. Second, it cuts out the opportunity for redemption. Why change if some jerk is going to dredge up your past again and again.

    Sad.

especially the “redemption” part. The only way to avoid the public shaming is to become a useful idiot of the Progressive mob. THEN all your sins are explained away, or forgiven altogether. The Left will protect you…until it finds it expedient not to. see: Trotsky

An article from yesterday’s Des Moines Register. Note that 95%+ of comments are very negative, except for the idiot with several posts accusing Carson King of being a drunk:

Hopefully thousands will cancel their subscriptions:

4 – Both, and both need to go, on what planet did the editor think this was ok or even pertinent to the story in anyway?

    12 – Most likely.

    7 – Yup.
Peeps think I’m a freak or lying when I say I have no twitter or facebook, or insta-whatever of the moment. The only ones that ever react positive to explanations like the above are those older than i, or about the same age with a clue and who usually laugh and nod their head. I had one HR person ask me if I thought not having said accounts made me look shady, I said no, quite the opposite, but if you’re telling me that’s how you and by extension this company views it, we’re probably done here.

An interesting view of someone in the know — https://www.zerohedge.com/political/he-had-help-former-cia-nsc-official-questions-too-convenient-and-too-perfect — Former NSC wonk who has dealings with the Congress Intel committee.

It paints an ugly picture if true. Means that staff and members of Congress are in a REAL coup against the executive branch. Worse the history of Congress impeaching members of the body on such charges is less than a handful.

The reporter is, like, a 10 year veteran of Media Matters. The editor is a jerk.

Aaron Calvin graduated from Hofstra in 2013 so he’s likely in his late 20s. Here’s his LinkedIn.com page:

    https://www.linkedin.com/in/aaron-calvin-1619a664/

My guess is that he is gone. Carol Hunter will be working to protect her ancient @$$, which has a huge target on it.

Based on the political direction the paper takes, Hunter appears to be a late 60s/70s year old leftist. She is so out of touch with the real world that she had absolutely no idea of the repercussions this would have. The paper’s daily circulation is 59,000 and Sunday is 105,000. A 10% loss in subscriptions would be disastrous.

The media insists on giving people “the finger” and then wonders who people hate them/don’t trust them and why circulation/ratings are in the toilet.

==> “If Trump had actually said anything objectionable–let alone impeachable!–in his conversation with Zelensky, Schiff would have quoted it. But because the conversation was entirely innocent, Schiff couldn’t quote a line of it. He had to make schiff up, and that’s what he did.”

Not enough people are being fired. Carol Hunter herself should be cashiered as well. She let the story be released. As editor it is her responsibility to make a final judgement as to the appropriateness of content. She failed.
