“People Don’t Trust Journalists b/c of Social Media”

2019 December 13
by bc3b

Fortunately, the folks at newsbusters.org monitor Stephen Colbert’s late-night show so sane people don’t have to.

Colbert had former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw as a guest and Brokaw complained about how social media has turned the American public about what passes as “journalists” these days.

But now, Brokaw lamented, the rise of new media on social media platforms had caused Americans to pick and choose what media they wanted instead of what “could be authenticated.” He added that while journalists weren’t infallible, they “worked hard” at finding the facts and were held accountable for their reporting.

Brokaw also complained that the traditional media no longer had a monopoly on news reporting, saying we’ve “lost control” of social media:

“Well it was. It was a big difference between now and social media. The fact is that this technological change — and I do believe that the people ought to have access to stating what they believe and what they want to be involved in, but we’ve lost control of it because you don’t know where it’s coming from, where it’s going, what the motivation is, and, so, when you see something, so many people believe it, ‘I believe that!’, and so much of it can’t be authenticated. That’s a huge difference between then and now. Doesn’t mean that those of us who are White House correspondents or in American journalism had all the answers but we worked hard at determining what in fact had happened, because we were liable for it at the end of the day, and the country paid attention to it, on that basis.”

For once Brokaw is (partially) correct … at least about Americans not trusting the media. According to the annual Gallup Media Trust Study, released in September only about 1/3 of Americans (mostly Democrats) trust the media. He is also correct in that the Internet, rather than just social media, destroyed the media’s monopoly and opened Americans to opposing opinions.

Brokaw laments the fact that people select sources in agreement with their world view. But, who other than far-left conspiracy crazies watch CNN these days?

Brokaw begs the question: Do Americans distrust “journalists” because of social media because of social media or because of “journalists?”

Brokaw was NBC Evening News anchor between 1982 and 2004. Like most post-Watergate “journalists” – a term loosely used – there was no doubt about where Brokaw’s political sympathies were – he was a liberal Democrat and his newscasts tended to favor liberal causes and show conservatives in a negative light. Brokaw wasn’t as bad as Dan Rather, who made up fake news, or Brokaw’s protege Brian Williams – the hero of the Normandy Invasion – but, like most post-Watergate “journalists,” Brokaw was anything but honest and objective.

Go back to the pre-Watergate days. Viewers had no idea of the political philosophy of news anchors like John Cameron Swayze, Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, John Chancellor, Howard K. Smith or Douglas Edwards. They presented news and opinion was labeled as such

Today it is far worse than it was in Brokaw’s day. CNN is little more than a propaganda network in the vein of the Soviet-era Pravda. How can NBC News have any credibility when Chuck Todd, a rabidly partisan Democrat whose wife is a principal in a marketing firm employed by progressive candidates, serves as its political director?

No Mr. Brokaw, social media didn’t destroy Americans’ trust in “journalists”; “journalists” destroyed Americans’ trust in “journalists.”

Tom, do you really expect Americans with IQs over 50 to trust NBC News?

The media is not only dishonest in what it covers, but also in what it embargoes, a perfect example being CNN’s non-coverage of the Senate hearings on the Horowitz Report.

Imagine the media coverage of Fast and Furious had it occurred during a Republican administration and been orchestrated by a Republican attorney general rather tan a black Democrat. The President would have been impeached. No one died because of Watergate.

Mr. Brokaw, Americans haven’t turned against the mainstream media because of social media, but because they realize it’s dishonest.

Just as Whatfinger, the Borgino Report and newsbusters.org is directed at conservatives, CNN and the est of MSM is designed to promote the left.

I watched about an hour of the BBC’s election coverage last night. Boy is the BBC dull. I don’t know what language the commentators were speaking … thank God for closed caption.

A couple take-aways. Britain mirrors the US in many ways:
    * Just as Democrats have lost the working class, so has Labour. One district that had voted Labour since 1935 is sending a Conservative MP to London
    * Cities vote Labour; flyover country votes conservative
    * Elites vote Labour
    * Minorities vote heavily Labour
    * Scotland is Britain’s left coast

    The results of yesterday’s election:

    Conservatives: 364 365
    Labour: 203
    Scottish National Party: 48
    Liberal Democrats: 11
    Green: 1
    Others: 22

I wonder if CNN will even cover the results of Britain’s elections.

bc3b, the American Left…hell, the Left all over the world…is in dismay and disarray over the results in Britain. The PEOPLE elected someone who pledges to support and listen to THEM. Just like Trump.

The Elites will fight back, but this was a major defeat.

back on topic…the media is being EXPOSED by “social media” and “alternative media”. The stranglehold is going (not yet gone). They still have the power to prolong circuses they like (Impeachment, for example), and dampen down to nothing those they don’t (Epstein, for example). The truth gets out, but without the media cheerleaders and/or media silencers, it takes longer.

The media has long been simply an arm of the Democrat Party, and vice versa. No wonder no one trusts them.

At one time, I was “booked up” on media failures. I could cite many examples of media errors in coverage backed with details. Now? My distrust is so deep I know longer watch or read those sources. I only half heartedly follow stories of media bias.
I’m less persuasive to an honest person who asks for examples.
But much happier as a human being.

While journalists always leaned left, in my view Watergate was the turning point. After Watergate reporters decided to become activists rather than just reporting objective facts. Prior to Watergate, opinion was segregated from hard news and clearly labeled as such (both in newspapers and on TV news). Since 2000 so-called “journalists” don’t even feel the need to feign objectivity.

Hopeful, Brits and Americans have both come to understand that if they don’t take a stand and stop what’s happening, they won’t have a country any more. Brits are in danger of becoming overrun by Muslims and the US in in danger of becoming Central America-Mexico North.

Jim, although I still am reasonably “booked up” on media failures and bias, I also have stopped trying to persuade most folks.

Why? Robert Heinlein said it perfectly:
“Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig.”

I have too many experiences trying to “teach a pig to sing”, and concluded Heinlein was right.

BC is right, the pressitutes turned their readers/viewers against them. And as he mentions, we have activists in press clothing. Fact I believe these days, especially social media, they are not MSM but press agents for a cause like any PR firm for a corporation. Many a keyboard pounder is paid by a NGO.

The Oakland City Council’s next great idea: Get a cruise ship to house the homeless.

Anyone who has ever been on a cruise knows how much upkeep a ship requires in comparison to a land-based building. The Oakland City Council cites the use of cruise ships to house Olympic athletes. This was for a relatively short period and most Olympic athletes wouldn’t take a crap on the deck. Within a week the ship would be like any homeless encampment.

I’ll take that bet, with conditions.

1,2,3 class book first. Homeless are on a wait list. Cruise is started based on weather conditions.
Cruise starts when a heavy squall or typhoon is projected. All booked passenger are boarded first. The homeless then pitch camp on deck as space allows, tents and all. Captain points ship to the squall line or typhoon.

Don’t you see the magnificence of their plan? Homeless get to share a cruise of a lifetime. The booked passengers get clean swept decks after exiting the typhoon. The city no longer has a homeless problem. Course there that persistent rumor “… don’t get on the trucks…..”

a pretty chicken-shit response from the head of the Virginia National Guard, IMHO. But read the whole thing. You’d have to pretty stupid (i.e., a Democrat) to not know that using the National Guard to disarm law abiding citizens would wind up looking like Lexington, MA…April 19, 1775. The only difference, most of the National Guardsmen would side with the “rebels”, i.e., the law abiding citizens.

And somewhere in Virginia a modern day Captain John Parker would say something like this: “Stand your ground. Don’t fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here.”

The Democrats in Virginia are INSANE. How insane remains to be seen.

JR, if it got down to it Trump could stamp it out in a heart beat…..

Trump: Hey, you need some help securing the border?
    Tx Guv: Sure.
Trump to Va Guv: I am by executive order calling for a mobilization of the VA Guard. They are to be deployed to Tx for exercises and border patrol. Va will be compensated for the expenses. [click]

JR, one other consideration. A movement for new South Virginia might erupt. That might bolster the Jefferson movement. Admit 2 new States for the effort of one.

If there were 17 errors including outright fraud in the FISA forms, how come Mueller didn’t find a single one?

“The FBI declares in a court filing that it has absolutely no records of disciplinary action against any lawyers in Russia Fisa Case despite 17 acts of misconduct. There is nothing noble about their leadership. FISA Court appears to be either corrupt or incompetent.” @LouDobbs

That charge was based on not complying with a congressional subpoena. . SCOTUS deems to hear the case. Defacto by this very act, one may challenge of same if it goes in Trump’s favor.

Query: Has power in the House ever switched without the benefit of an election?

Imagine if the shaky 31 Dims voted no confidence on Pelosi prior to the election and caucused with the GOP to dethrone the Speaker. Unlikely I know, but the rules of the House do not prevent it.
