Democratic Candidates at War

2020 February 10
by bc3b

Not much (nothing?) is going right for Thomas Perez and the Democratic Party. The economy, jobs, impeachment, balance of trade, popular State of the Union, Trump rising in the polls, Iowa and a new national poll shows Bernie Sanders with a major (8 point) lead over Joe Biden.

If that isn’t bad enough, Democratic candidates are really getting vicious in attacking one another.

MANCHESTER, N.H. —Democratic leaders have edged toward the brink of open war with one another in recent days after a series of jarring setbacks that could jeopardize the party’s chances against President Trump, who continues to solidify his iron-fisted control over the Republican election apparatus.

The infighting focuses largely on the failed caucus process in Iowa, with state and national Democratic leaders at odds over who deserves blame, as well as an increasingly bitter dispute over the rules governing who gets into future nationally televised candidate debates — a process that could allow billionaire Mike Bloomberg to make the stage later this month.

In a particularly stark sign, supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) have returned to bashing the Democratic National Committee, reviving grievances from the divisive 2016 primary race. In that campaign, Sanders backers said that the system had been stacked against the democratic socialist — a view later affirmed when WikiLeaks released hacked internal emails — and supporters of nominee Hillary Clinton blamed Sanders for failing to sufficiently rally his base on Clinton’s behalf in the general election.

Sanders’s allies are again charging that the DNC is maneuvering to thwart his anti-establishment movement. They say the DNC’s decision last week to call for a “recanvass” in Iowa threatened to undercut Sanders’s ability to claim momentum from winning the popular vote there, while changing the rules to benefit Bloomberg reflects the desire among the party elite for a savior to deny Sanders the nomination.

“They can shout unity all they want, but the actions show otherwise,” said Nina Turner, a national co-chairman of the Sanders campaign.

The brew of resentment and anxiety represents a sharp turn for a presidential primary race that began last year with a historically diverse field and intense optimism that Democrats could harness the same energy that helped them win big in 2018.

Now party unity is breaking down just as voters express rising concerns that none of the remaining candidates is fully equipped to take on an incumbent president who regularly scoffs at political norms of civility and accuracy.

Like Iowans, many of whom remained undecided until the last moment before the caucuses, about a third of New Hampshire voters remain undecided, with Sanders and former South Bend, Ind., mayor Pete Buttigieg appearing to have momentum before the Tuesday primary. The longtime national polling leader, Joe Biden, who many Democrats hoped would unify the party and pose the greatest threat to Trump, posted a disappointing finish in Iowa and has been sliding in New Hampshire.

The party’s internal strife now looms over the Tuesday vote here as well as additional primaries set for the coming weeks.

Speaking of war, I sure hope Trump ain’t listening to pompeo right now who wants to help Al Qaida…. again in syria in support of Turks who have been making insane moves in recent weeks supporting Al Qaida (HTS) full stop.

TLDR of situation is turks have been invading syria again around idlib all while syria and russia been finishing off HTS in that area. Turks been shooting at SAA and RU, and then act surprised when they get bombed back …after much attempts by ru to try and get them to stay out of the way…and jack ass pompeo talking like he wants to get the US involved in this clusterfuck. How stupid are these people around Trump? Erdo made this mess for himself, let him wallow in it, not to mention he’s no friend of ours and nato ain’t about protecting member nations while they’re invading others to support terrorists. sigh. Our message be should hey lunatic gtfo out idlib and stop purposely causing problems – but i doubt it since US fp seems to always be to encourage more chaos.

sorry I needed to vent 🙂

KH, thanks for the Assyrian update.

Maybe I’m wrong, and I know Russia has a bad history but they seem to be a permanent second tier power these days and would likely be a decent ally. Whereas Turkey just acts like snakes.

If US and Russia became allies the EU would shLt. They know two things would occur —

    * Their welfare state system would end,
    * Savings of which would have to be allocated to defense.

The Chins would not be too pleased either. Don’t underestimate how crafty the Rus can be. Old story, when I was in St. Petersburg for 18mos I saw how they were making 1st grade ruby knife blades for RK surgery. 70yo machinist had a grinding wheel set on a lathe built in 1896. ‘We’ used a $100k CNC machine and could only do half the production the ole boy could do. I constantly saw where craft and guile was substituting automation. That was 30+ yrs ago. Probably all changed now.

But still they can make a SU-57 multi-role fighter at near parity to a F-22. At a third less the cost as well. Over the years I constantly hear that Russian military gear is crude. There is a logic to it all — just make it ‘good enough’ to be competitive. All the spit and polish is a waste when you consider that whole aircraft may only survive 4-5 sorties. Why spend more? We used to think the same way back in WWII. Now we have the german-engineered-disease and nothing works.

Yeah the optics suck canal water.

But ask yourself, is there anything that is statistically an untruth in what he said? Which is ironic because in a world flooded with PC, pointing out the truth in such a world means you lose not on the merits, but the ‘feels’.

    Sucks to be a democrat.

  18. 2020 February 11 10:30 am

17 – No problem, things been popping off there, mostly in a good way (toward that conflict finally ending) during the the last 3-4 weeks, until Turkey stuck its nose in again escalating like crazy in the last week, with little purpose or sense. All I can say is if this shit starts hitting the media here don’t believe a word out of turkey (or probably the US) about it being about refugees or ‘rebels’ – it’s not.

As for RU… i mean they can be snakes just like the US can be, but at least you can expect it, and they’re far more rational actors than Turkey has been the last 20 years. I was hoping when Trump was elected we could work toward semi common interests with them in containing China a bit, and letting them have the syria mess when we were done with isis, but that went out the door with the ru-ru-ru bs, follow by Lucy convincing trump not to pull out completely like his instincts told him too (tip – we have more shit there now than we did 12 mo ago).

19 – idk wasn’t there some poll showing he’s now +20 more than biden with blacks (at least before this). I could be wrong but I bet the DNC (aka media) as usual will give him a pass if it works toward preserving their goals – one of which is to keep him around for all that ad money.

Guess I have to ask the fundamental question — Is Assad the enemy or an ally?

Couple us attorney’s from the Roger Stone case just resigned from the case, and I think one of them from the DOJ as well (vs just the case). Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) betrayed the entire Republican Party when he voted to impeach Donald Trump in the Senate impeachment trial. Now, this has come back to bite him in a big way, as the GOP in his home state has drawn up a resolution that will force him to either support Trump or step down.

The resolution, which was submitted by Utah GOP State Central Committee member Brandon Beckham, will be considered at the Republican Party state central committee meeting on February 29, according to The Blaze.

“Techno Fog made the assertion Zelinsky and Jed intentionally made a ridiculous sentencing request for Stone as a weapon against Barr. The DOJ stepping in on the Stone case allows them to resign from the DOJ in protest and gives the Democrats and MSM a “AG Barr is corrupt” talking point.”

  27. 2020 February 11 3:55 pm

24 – My question would be the same about Turkey. (fkem both – hand out of it)

As for Assad – He was a little like the Quack\Libya before all this, not an ally (and certainly was no help when US was in heavily in Iraq, he let his border get used to flood militants in), but also knew his place in a matter of speaking. Thing is unlike say Turkey he wasn’t looking to expand borders (or religion) beyond the forever argument over the golan, which was always and still is more rhetoric than some reality in his mind. He was pretty protective of the Christian minority there before that community basically disappeared in this conflict since what ~2011?.

Today – He’s a crippled enemy driven even closer to Iran and Russia than he was before.

That Sir is why I consider public internet VPN services to be a joke. Driving your traffic thru a network choke point, and that is how VPNs are generally implemented, is like trying to maneuver a division thru a mountain pass and not expect trouble.

A private point to point VPN however is a different matter.
