Does the 1st Amendment only Apply to the Media?

2020 February 29
by bc3b

Obviously not:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Freedom of the press (today viewed as the media) is just one of numerous freedoms outlined in the 1st Amendment, adopted in 1791. Another is freedom of speech, a right of every US citizen.

As the media, particularly news outlets, have become more partisan and biased (many would say dishonest), they have come under increasing attack and the percentage of Americans that no longer trust the media has declined significantly.

Gallup first measured trust in the mass media in a 1972 survey when 68% of Americans said they trusted it. Similar levels were recorded in 1974 (69%) and 1976 (72%), but two decades later, when Gallup next asked the question, trust had fallen to 53%.

Although overall trust was at the majority level until 2004, no more than 21% of Americans dating back to 1972 ever said they had the greatest level of trust. Currently, 13% have a great deal of trust, 28% a fair amount, 30% not very much and 28% none at all.

Breaking down the numbers by political party: 69% of Democrats trust the media compared to 36% of independents and only 15% of Republicans. This mirrors the media’s bias.

NOTE: The Gallup Annual Media Trust Study is never covered by the media.

Yet media hacks like Chuck Todd, Brian Stelter and Christine Amanpour defend the media’s obvious bias (many would say dishonesty) by claiming that anyone who criticizes the media is an enemy of freedom of the press and opposed to liberty.

CNN’s Christiane Amanpour said the time may be ripe for a NATO-inspired pact for members of the media: “An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.”

The network’s chief international anchor posted the message in addition to her remarks to a U.K. audience excoriating President Trump and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

“Let’s have our own ‘NATO Article 5’: an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us,” she tweeted while sharing footage of her remarks before journalists overseas.

Ms. Amanpour’s commentary comes less than one year since she asked former FBI Director James B. Comey if American citizens who scream “Lock her up!” regarding former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton should be accused of “hate speech.”

“Do you, in retrospect, wish that people like yourself — the FBI, I mean — the people in charge of law and order, had shut down that language — that it was dangerous potentially, that it could’ve created violence, that it’s kind of hate speech?” she asked in April. “Should that have been allowed?”

“That’s not the role for government to play,” he replied.

Thursday’s remarks by the reporter saw her casting her audience and other reporters as a “pillar” of democracy and freedom.

The same 1st Amendment that grants the press (media) the right to lie and distort facts gives every American (including the President) the right to call out the media for its lies, distortions and outright dishonesty.

Interesting how the media tries to use the 1st Amendment, which guarantees the right of free speech, to silence criticism of the media..

2 – Way to not politicize things Mini Mike, I’m sure your scaremercial will go over well for tuesday. /s

Could go either way though, either this will bury him if voters don’t appreciate the transparent political stunt, or it’ll get his name name recognition up for all those ballots he’s on Tuesday if they like it. Flip a coin at this point given our populace but I’d like to think the first is more likely – even among those voting in dem primaries.

“Judges at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in California have suspended their decision to knock down two policies that have dramatically cut the flow of migrants over the southern border.”

Technically just till some hearing monday, but one wonders if the timing of this and the optics and likely hood of being immediately fast-tracked and overturned didn’t play into this decision given what may quickly be a closed border a week from now.

Still traveling so it’s tough to type on my cell phone. That said. …

The Left (which 90% of the media is ) abhors free speech, abhors honest debate, and abhors reasoning. Thus they view any comments about them OTHER THAN those of adulation, as “Hate Speech.

I am sick of having Leftists (and yes I know some) shut down even a casual conversation as soon as they realize you’re going to ask them to [gasp!] support their position! I had that happen just the other day and it truly sickened me.

Mayor Peter Butt is yet another Manchurian candidate. He was designed and built by the same forces that designed and built Barry. He was never intended to be the 2020 nominee. His debut was intended to create public awareness, and pave the way for a 2024 run at which point he will already be a household name. He WILL be the Dem nominee in 2024.

Jack was a bit of a pirate. But unlike Mitt who just bought a sold for the sheer profit of it; Jack based his decision on staying competitive under the GE umbrella. The subtle difference was shareholders benefited from Welch’s efforts. Romney just raped the shareholders for his own benefit.
