NY Times Blames White Parents for Minority Student Failure

2020 July 24
by bc3b

I worked with a woman whose mother, a white Jewish woman, taught third grade in Detroit Public Schools for decades. She could have taught in the suburbs with far fewer problems and greater success with students achieving more and moving on to college, but she was dedicated.

Julie told us that every student evaluation night her mother would come home in tears as only 3-5 parents would show up. Compare that to suburban or Catholic schools, where some parents have to park several blocks away.

My daughter teaches third grade in a suburban Detroit school. It’s considered the most difficult school in the district. Students either come from 3,000+ sq. ft. homes or are bussed in from a large manufactured housing park in the district. In three years of teaching, she only has had one student whose parent(s) didn’t attend – a Hispanic single mother who didn’t speak English. In spite of the children from poor backgrounds, McGregor Elementary is rated 7 on a scale of 10 (very good) by greatschools.org and has an A rating from Niche. Most of the poor children at McGregor are either poor whites or Hispanic.

By contrast, most (all?) of the children Julie’s mother taught were blacks raised by single mothers, who didn’t finish high school and didn’t really value education.

The New York Times is trying to rewrite America’s history, painting the country as totally racist via Project 1619 . Now the paper is working to blame white parents for the poor performance of black and Hispanic children in public schools. It couldn’t have anything to do with the 77% illegitimacy rate, the fact that only about 15% – 20% of parents care enough to attend student evaluation nights. Like all other minority failures, it’s the fault of whites.

The New York Times announced Thursday it is releasing a new podcast series titled Nice White Parents, about how white parents are preventing black and brown children from succeeding in public schools.

The podcast series, to be released July 30 from Serial Productions, will be available via Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google.

According to the TimesNice White Parents is “about the 60-year relationship between white parents and the public school down the block.”

Its premise is reportedly that the reason government schools are failing “black and brown kids” is due to powerful “white parents.”

Reporter Chana Joffe-Walt states in an audio clip the basis for the project is research that led her back to New York City in 1963, when optimistic white parents insisted that a new school, intended originally for black and Hispanic children who lived in “the projects,” be built near their neighborhood instead, so that their white children and the minority children could attend school together.

When the school was finally built, however, Joffe-Walt reported the white parents never actually sent their children to the school. In the series, she relates some of the conversations she had with some of the white parents to examine why they failed to follow through with their stated intentions.

The Times report says the new podcast series demonstrates that questions about why there is an achievement gap between children from black and Hispanic families and white and Asian families – despite 20 years of progressive reforms in public schools – need to be revisited:

We know that American public schools do not guarantee each child an equal education — two decades of school reform initiatives have not changed that. But when we look at how our schools are failing, we usually focus on who they’re failing: Black and brown kids. We ask: Why aren’t they performing better? Why aren’t they achieving more?

“Those are not the right questions,” the Times says. “If you want to understand what’s wrong with our public education system, you have to look at what is arguably the most powerful force in our schools: White parents.”

Joffe-Walt has also reported on sexual harassment and the #MeToo movement, and is a producer for the public radio show This American Life.

“We ask: Why aren’t they performing better? Why aren’t they achieving more?”

The last thing the NY Times and Chana Joffe-Walt want are honest answers to those questions.

My experience with the school system was running a number of important fundraisers and then serving as PTA president of the neighborhood public elementary school my kids were in. Although the great majority of students were White (with most the rest Asian or Indian), as a Republican I often had to bite my tongue. As reflected in snide comments towards non-Democrats, apparently many other PTA members couldn’t imagine a Republican being alturistic and concerned about the schools well being. Don’t get me started on the controversy around the naming of the annual Father-Daughter Dance.

After Obama was elected in 2008 the negative rhetoric went from bad to much worse so I was happy to be done with it as my kids moved on to upper grades. Fortunately, on a whole, the good experiences and friends I made more than made of for the bad.

As for the NYT complaining about White culture caring more about the education of their kids than some other cultures. They can cry me a river…

McGregor is the next to worst elementary (out of 12) in the 9th best district (out of 550) in Michigan. In most districts it would be the top-performing school. And yes, they still have a Daughter/Daddy Dance.

Seems the Chief of Police in Seattle has distributed a letter to business owners and residence of Seattle that they are on their own this weekend.

    July 24, 2020

    Dear Business Owner and/or Resident:

Please know that the Seattle Police Department is committed to addressing life safety incidents and calls for service, and responding to ongoing demonstrations and unrest in the city.

Please also know that the City Council Ordinance 119805 Crowd Control Tool goes into effect this weekend on Sunday, July 26, 2020. This ordinance bans Seattle Police officers the use of less lethal tools, including pepper spray that is commonly used to disperse crowds that have turned violent. Simply put, the legislation gives officers NO ability to safely intercede to preserve property in the midst of a large, violent crowd.

It is important to bring to your attention that yesterday, I sent the City Council a letter ensuring them that as the Chief of Police, I have done my due diligence of informing them numerous times of the foreseeable impact of this ordinance on upcoming events. The letter is attached for your reference.

For these reasons, Seattle Police will have an adjusted deployment in response to any demonstrations this weekend – as I will never ask our officers to risk their personal safety to protect property without the tools to do so in a safe way.

    Sincerely,

    Carmen Best

    Chief of Police

I searched out an article about Seattle. It noted one business owner who hired “armed security”.
Still, I wonder. Would you take a chance on being charged with Murder-1 in Seattle in order to protect some guy’s shop?
Maybe “armed security” will be enough to get the mob to do the guy across the street instead of your shop. But maybe not.

when our youngest son was in high school he attended the School of the Arts (SOTA) in San Francisco. in the Summer between his 10th and 11th year the school moved to a different location in the city, and took over a pretty run-down facility. His teacher asked all the parents (there were about 20 kids in his Creative Writing’ class) to come to her classroom over the Summer on a few Saturdays and paint, take out trash, clean up, etc.

Of the 20 or so sets of parents there were only TWO sets of parents that were Republicans. My wife& I, and one other couple. ALL the rest were raving lunatic Democrats…VERY VERY far-Left.

You guessed it. ONLY the two Republican sets of parents showed up…ever. We worked hard on 5 or 6 Saturdays and made the place look great…and the Leftist parents never came.

At first I was opposed to Carmen Best, Seattle police chief. But, as time has passed, it has become increasingly apparent that she is trying to do her best (no pun intended) while dealing with a half-witted mayor and communist city council. You get the government you vote for.

DrDog, I didn’t get the reply, could you re-send?

For anyone on Yahoo email …. it seems to be acting up. At least for me.
    1) I sent about 12 msgs to the youngest. She got none of them not even in Spam
    2) I didn’t get DrDog’s email
    3) While looking for DrDog’s email in Spam, I found an email from my sister. It was a reply to a message I sent to her, and she is in my Contact list and it was one line of text, no links etc, so how could that possibly be Spam?

I have a gmail account but I don’t like it because of the way they thread email into conversations.
Does anyone have an email provider they recommend?
