Saving Parler

2021 January 11
by drdog09

A tongue and cheek look about what Parler will have to go thru to bring their site back up. So lets lay it out with a few particulars in mind:

  • No use of ‘Woke’ companies. eg. Mozilla.
  • No use of platforms. Its why they got kicked off AWS.
  • No dependence on ‘Woke’ income streams.

So laying that out how would Parler, or any other company pull this off?

ISP

First thing that is needed is of course bandwidth and assigned numbers to use. Assuming that the usual Tech Tyrants are not going to be nice drives one all the way to layer 1 in the OSI model. To achieve that one must –

  • Approach ARIN the number assigner an acquire a pool.
    • IPv6
    • Achieve the assigned usage goals in the given time.
    • Preferred assignment.
  • Approach a carrier for the traffic.
    • Must be a common carrier
    • Must be regulated
    • Has state regulatory commission reporting.

Lets address the carrier aspect. You want a common carrier (VZ, Sprint, AT&T, Level3) entity as the bearer of the traffic for the simple reason they cannot generally discriminate. Further you want to pick a carrier who is regulated in a State that really are, excuse the expression, assholes about this. As the customer you want an environment that favors your position. Then on to the numbering. ARIN is the sub-unit of IANA that covers the north American market. They have a complete defined process for becoming an ISP. Use IPv6 since the IPv4 number space is nearly exhausted. Request a relatively large block to support the business, and yes being an ISP will become a sideline for someone like Parler. Finally suggest the preferred number space that is in the range space common to the carrier in the locale of choice so as to avoid them balking about accepting one as a customer.

One should think wide scale here. Someone like Parler would probably never need a million IP name space. But over the long haul Parler will not be the only business kicked off platforms. Parler might as well become a safe harbor provider for ‘Deplorables’ and their ‘Deplorable’ businesses. It will be needed. That sideline would be the income stream to support Parler the app.

Platform

Yep, the ugly word that Gen Z seems to ignore – hardware. The ugly, grimy rack and stack stuff that today seems so ‘yesterday’. But the ole saying “if you can’t touch it, you don’t own it” applies here. I won’t get too detailed since to do so blows up into options in a million ways. Particularly as to selection of vendor on down. But what I will point out are two levels, one for SMEs and another for enterprise types.

SME

If you are a small time operator hardware wise you would want 3+ units with the following characteristics:

  • CPU, 4 cores, VT or VTx capable, largest L2 cache size you can afford.
  • 32Gb ram
  • 2Tb storage minimum, 4Tb preferred.
  • 2 Gbe NICs

Enterprise

If you are a larger company hardware wise you would want 3+ units with the following characteristics:

  • CPU, 8 or 16 cores, VT or VTx capable, largest L2 cache size you can afford.
  • 64Gb ram, 128Gb preferred
  • 4Tb preferred or a dual SAN.
  • 2 Gbe NICs

A development desktop might also be required for someone like Parler. The SME recommendation would suffice but just one unit. This device will take a different software path than those servers.

But why 3+ or more units you might ask. Simply put that is the general minimum required to provide a cloud based service that the enterprise would ride on top of.

Cloud

Parler lived on AWS so why not build your own? Staff knows the concepts, just acquire the skills for a non-AWS environment.

SME

Probably two I would recommend are:

Proxmoxx

or

oVirt
glusterFS

Either system will provide a simple easy to use cloud arrangement the typical small company. They have web based front ends. Now they don’t have the separation of functions like the next two, but in smaller environments it is probably not needed based on experience.

Enterprise

Only two to consider

Eucalyptus
OpenStack

Reason being they are enterprise scale and they support AWS AMI images. That makes is possible to do a drop-n-go with what has already been developed.

Development

On a single machine for development work I might suggest VirtManager. If this seems familiar, just say “it looks like Virtual Box or VmWare” cuz it is. VirtManager is very much like those two tools in use. It is open source however and the performance is near hardware level.

Apps

Well at this juncture using the enterprise cloud solution, Parler could bring their service up in short order. As long as they have the AMI images it would be pretty quick. Most of the effort listed is getting that first three layers assembled.

Conclusion

If this appears as a Linux/Open Source solution, you would be correct. Why not Microsoft with Hyper-V? You could. My only counter point would be, and what do you do if Microsoft cuts you off? You are right back where you started essentially.

The FBI is warning of protests in all 50 state capitals if President Trump is removed from office before Inauguration Day. So what does “crazy as a sh!thouse rat” Nanzi propose to do?

Well, she proposes to remove him from office one way or another in numerous political speeches.

Is that considered inciting riots via political speech similar to the charges she continues to spew out?

    Folks,

I just got home, 4,000 miles after leaving here 10 days ago.

Traveling home I thought I would pick up some ammunition along the way, because in the PRK it is “difficult” to come by (unless you’re a gang banger). I focused on ammo stores along our route, in each State (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada). I looked at their websites, and even called. Almost NO AMMO to be found…anywhere! Finally, today, I went into a store in Reno that I had bought ammo in before…a HUGE store. They have FIVE AISLES devoted to ammunition, of every caliber. With the exception of about 20 boxes of ammo in odd calibers scattered about those five aisles , they had NO ammo. NONE.

    Zilch.

I asked one of the salesmen, and he said: “We can’t keep ANY in stock.”

Scheels is only a few miles away, and I re-checked their website, they also have almost NO AMMO. We came home.

A combination of two things are going on:
    (1) People are afraid that ammunition will be “unavailable” after Biden* is installed. Whether priced/regulated out of reach, or banned altogether. (the 2nd Amendment says you have the “Right to Bear Arms”…it doesn’t mention “ammunition”
    (2) This country is preparing for WAR…Civil War.

The Court of Appeals acknowledged that the Second Amendment right is “not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose…but it does encompass a right to keep ordinary handguns in the home for use in self-defense.” The court therefore reasoned that although neither Heller nor the subsequent Supreme Court case McDonald v. Chicago specifically addressed ammunition, “it logically follows that the right to keep and bear arms extends to the possession of handgun ammunition in the home; for if such possession could be banned (and not simply regulated), that would make it “impossible for citizens to use [their handguns] for the core lawful purpose of self-defense.”
    Herrington v. District of Columbia.

precedent is there, for how long nobody knows.

The unholy alliance of Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, Apple and Google has created what amounts to an Information Death Star.

They hovered the Death Star over Trump and the very few Republicans brave enough to back him, and now they don’t even have to threaten people or entities anymore. The mere EXISTENCE of the Information Death Star has the already spineless GOP, and damn near everyone else, cowering. After all, if they can silence POWERFUL people, the little people (I.e., US) don’t stand a chance.

And this is BEFORE Biden* is installed in the basement of the White House, and BEFORE the Democrats take full control of Congress. After next week they won’t even try to pretend to give a shit about America. And WHATEVER they do, the Supreme Court will either endorse or refuse to consider (same thing).

I was waaaaay too optimistic with my mid-year prediction.

Excellent comment from someone over at PowerLine:

Welcome to the ascension of the Democratic-Fascist Party. This is their electronic Kristallnacht, with conservatives and Republicans being treated as untermenschen. Progressives have finally brought the fascism they’ve long admired to America.

The analogy is perfectly apt…it just doesn’t go far enough. Kristallnacht SHOULD have been a wake-up for the Jews, but it wasn’t. Instead millions of them walked meekly into gas chambers still thinking to the very last instant: “This too will pass.”

I know far too many people, friends AND family, who think ” This too will pass”. Unlike 1945 where America came to the rescue and the Holocaust finally DID pass, it WON’T pass this time. Machines don’t get tired, and don’t question their orders…they have no conscience. Once the algorithms are set and the targets of those algorithms identified, they will carry on regardless. And the Left’s control will be absolute. The time to fight this scenario is drawing to a close.

BTW 70tb of parler’s data has been leaked presumably by an aws employee to the internet, read that last night in the forums on a torrent site I frequent. Yet another reminder to the world of storing all you data in some else’s “cloud”. Granted I suppose even if not stored on someone else’s hardware could have just as easily been leaked from an internal source… see ms’s win2k source code leak from 2019 not that it mattered really.

    long rant:

Yes why they Parler over the last months didn’t they have at least have at least a single rack co-lo’d somewhere else of there own I don’t understand. Bitchute warned them, gab and others warned them, it was clear it was only a matter of time – and not just the politics, you think Aws wasn’t itching for a reason to use anyway in the last year, you think twitter wasn’t already pressuring every way they could to have competition fked with?

There are 1000+ colo places across the us, some tiny, some large, 1000’s more across the world – granted only a subset of that would take the business but they do exist – they’re just not the cheapest.
Yeah things get expensive because that rack is ~125k (maybe more or maybe less these days) of gear between the boxes,med-end san, quality switches and other gear, but so is losing your business overnight. Even if a colo is gonna boot you, you still have the gear to quickly move to another facility – so long as you’ve paid your bill and they aren’t holding it hostage for payment. Not to mention most just don’t cut you like that, you’re almost always given more warning, and frankly most of smaller players actually value the ~10k they’re charging you every month for 2x1gig-10gig link + 2x redundant 20amp a\b power for that ~10sq ft (most of cost is power). I’d rather my service be a little slower\less performant and exist than be able to be yanked entirely from me. And Paler page load times already were slow as shit from what I understood anyway so not sure it matters.

In short they went the cheap route (which I understand in the opening months, but don’t once you got a couple million users). Plenty of private colo datacenters out there that never would have pulled this shit (some even have their own private ‘cloud’ offerings – though I would pass on that), at least they’re used to be a few years ago. Hell some of the major torrent sites have and still use this strat forever – and a couple of them probably get more traffic then Parler does lol, granted the db’s related traffic isn’t comparable.

Slightly cheaper in the short term (way more expensive in the long term) would have been to “rent” a rack from multiple larger hoster (but not publically traded mega corps) that aren’t going to pull some shit quite as easily because their reps matter to them, people who have actually fought battles or at least shown resistance to people trying to fuck with their customers before. I mean for a couple k a month they could have rented a rack from ovh for example, and a couple k more for another provider for some geo separation and load balance.

Another tip if doing that, form some shells per service provider that actually contact for the services and then provide the services to Parler, it’s not much but can keep the random woke employee who’s searching company records to see if “Parler” is a customer not see the name come up. I have a box in Canada, it’s not rented by “me”, it’s rented technically by a LLC I own for example, still paid by me but cursory search by random employee will not turn up my name.

Now eventually they’d out grow the 2-3 racks (constantly moving one every month or so if necessary) spread across the country\world strategy. In itself that would have a least made ‘attackers’ have to split their forces among multiple pressure targets, shifting targets too at times, but it would have bought time for as Dr mentions them to eventually build their own data-center. That btw doesn’t have to be some massive high end 50m$ facility. Not everything has to be a triple redundant setup, lots of smaller co-lo’s are ‘good enough’, especially if you have more than one. There are plenty of little hole-in-the wall private data centers out there that are like 2500sqft , I’ve been in dozens of these places (and that’s just around Atlanta, even helped build out two of them) – which is _always_ ultimately the only solution if you want some level of control. At that point your main risks are the regulated power company and the regulated fiber providers, for which you’ll want at least 2 if not more into the building, and of course your landlord if you don’t actually own the property, you damn well should, or at least have a iron clad lease.

*Better would be pickup a couple investors and buy out (or take majority stake in) an existing small colo, use that as your base and build from there, including the side-hustle of providing safe harbor rack space for some other companies in similar boats that can offset your significant mo operating costs. As everyone grows you slowly build out or acquire a few more. This jump starts\avoids the process of getting your own AS# and some at least some v4 allocations to your “name”. BTW does Parler even generate any revenue at all really yet?

The real question is do they have the money to do any of that? The whole thing always struck me as being run on shoestring – which is fine but restricts options. It’s not super expensive, but it’s definitely not cheap either, you’d want a couple mil in the bank to start so you could run at a loss for awhile. Conservative money would have been better spent long-term donating toward toward something like this than “The Kraken” lawsuits.

    TLDR:
Bottom line their was they had all or at least most (I don’t know their internal architecture) eggs in one basket, using Aws or Azure etc to process\munch on gobs of data where you’re basically renting cpu time is fine, or to balance your front end load is fine, etc, that’s somewhat easily replaced if things go bad, but building your entire business on some else’s virtual platforms imho has always been just stupid in my opinion – talk about vendor lock-in, at that point they own your business you don’t.

I was thinking about how I would spend the Powerball or MegaMillions lotto winnings (both at present drawings paying out 400million+ cash option this week …minus ~45% taxes of course). This is exactly the sort of thing I’d potentially waste 50-100 million on trying to build and grow over the next 5 years as a passion project. A give-no-fucks privately held Network\Colo provider – so long as you’ve paid we don’t care what you’re doing. Including buying up my own fiber where possible (between DCs, and at least to IX points) to further mitigate risk of being pressured by others. Along with that banking\credit\union services would be worthy of investment as well. All easier said then done, especially now as you almost have to do it on the sly till you’re of certain size that can’t be fucked with.

46 – I really don’t understand you still being surprised by that fact.

Info Death Star… lol really apt way of putting it, quite true, and all predicted \predictable. You could see it in ~2005 as quite possible, by ~2010 it was clear it was going in that direction and with no push back it would be nearly unstoppable, including some financial institutions starting to get into the game. By ~2015 it’s clutches and reach were clear, and worse the “woke” bullshit started infecting everything, no decent would be tolerated, and all of it was already actively being used against people both individual and large segments in general, as predicted. By that year not only were numerous incidents making it clear but many of those operating these services were making it clear publicly not just what they were gonna do now and down the line but in late 2016 some even detailed exactly how they would do it. Then they did just that, at increasing frequency. The preceding years was just spent buying up more pols to ensure none of it would be touched with anything more than lip service, that of course was the cheapest and easiest part of it all.

Yeah…never cared for his personal politics but have mostly respected the fact Greenwald has been largely non-hypocritically calling this shit out for the last decade no matter who was the topic of the day (left or right). Reading some of the ace comments I find it strange people seem surprised in Glen’s comments, I’m not at all. Maybe they haven’t followed Glens writing over the years, especially in recent years, plenty of which I don’t necessarily agree with but when it comes to big-tech and big-gov secrecy and censorship\control he’s one of the few that has been consistent in warnings no matter the year or target.

Update: apparently the 70tb wasn’t leaked from aws but some project to scrape every page or whatever on the service. So nothing of value really. Also Judge *what a surprise* denies application for TRO on aws.

The Dog and I have already set up protonmail.com email accounts. It’s Swiss-based and (unlike Gmail and Yahoo mail) is very unobtrusive. Only takes about two minutes to sign up.

I plan to limit my Outlook account to business only and stop using Gmail completely. I am going to keep bjgsports@gmx.com for sports and as a central contact hub. gmx.com is based in Germany.

    50,

I don’t think AWS has calculated yet how much it is going to cost them in business. Regardless of one’s political bent, as a manager one has to wonder — “Am I next?”. With that kind of uncertainty many will migrate to other platforms or bring it in-house to avoid the risk. The other thing I will opine is — being pissed at a vendor usually has very long tails. I remember a contract dispute we had with a vendor when I started with GTE and before I left we still had not entertained doing business with them — 23yrs later.

PRP, I can’t imagine Mitch ever doing anything that didn’t serve MITCH. Thus I can’t see him tanking the GOP by doing “Impeachment”…unless there is some other angle in play.

IF the Senate did go along with this, then the GOP is truly finished.

    58 – But Lamb was re-hired\unsuspended lol.

59 – What’s the point with a week to go really though? What’s the value in it…really vs cost, whole idea is just beyond dumb, but then again really-dumb-shit seems to be the rule in the last year.

60 – True organizations tend not to forget, particularly if they don’t have high turn over, so same people around someone is always going to remember. Also when it comes to memories there is the fact most time someone get’s\feels wronged they’re gonna share that with about ~25 avg people over time. When you do them well the avg is 5, so the key is usually avoiding the first. As for AWS… I mean really does anyone there care even if it does cost them? Or anyone else that has cut off services to various parties over the last year? They just don’t care, to big to have to care they think – and in the short term they’re right they are and they don’t because they’ve seen zero $$ repercussions yet.

    67 – 🙂 🙂

I posted this last thread, and you’ll always be able to find disagreement among lawyers but:

    https://pjmedia.com/instapundit/425229/
Alan Dershowitz: Democrats Cannot Impeach Trump, and You Can’t Impeach Him After Leaving Office. “Congress has no power to impeach or try a private citizen, whether it be a private citizen named Donald Trump or named Barack Obama or anyone else.”
(Harvard grad, law prof Glenn Reynolds says) they can’t disqualify him from running again. The penalty for impeachment only includes disqualification from offices of “trust or profit,” and as Josh Blackman and Seth Barrett Tillman demonstrated some time ago, those offices are appointed, not elected offices.

If Trump started a MAGA Party he would instantly have at least 30 to 40 MILLION people register under it. It would be like no other 3rd Party in history…except maybe when the GOP itself was founded.

Yes, it would destroy the GOP, and hand the Democrats even more power, but so what? They’re gonna have it anyway.

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-corporate-visa/visa-temporarily-suspends-all-political-donations-idUSKBN29H2D4

(Reuters) – Visa Inc said on Tuesday its political action committee had temporarily suspended all donations last week as it reviews its candidate contribution guidelines.

A host of businesses have said they would cut off campaign contributions to those who voted last week to challenge President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.

“Visa does not tolerate the use of our network and products for illegal activity. We are vigilant in our efforts to deter illegal activity on our network, and we require our affiliate banks to review their merchants’ compliance with our standards,” Visa said in an email.
