It’s Never Gonna Be Enough

For those of you not familiar with Evanston, IL (that would likely be everyone but JBoz and me) it is an inner-ring suburb that borders Chicago on the north. It is a city of about 80,000, is home to Northwestern University and it is woke … very, very woke.

Evanston made news a few weeks ago when it became the first city in the US to announce reparations. Now, Evanston is coming under attack from black activists. The $25,000 amount is too small, there are too many restrictions, etc. Some are even labeling the reparations as – you guessed it – racissst.

How much will be satisfactory? To put things in perspective, Robert Johnson, the founder of Black Television Network is seeking $14-trillion. There are approximately 48-million blacks in the US. That works out to $291,666 for every black man, woman and child in the US (or over $1.1-million for a family of four). Thank God for Excel.

It looks like 625,000 lives weren’t reparations enough.

What could go wrong?

Evanston, Illinois, could be the first city in the United States to give reparations to its black residents. The reasoning behind it, according to Newsweek, is that it’s a way to make amends for the city’s past redlining policies, along with other housing discrimination initiatives that existed until about a half-century ago. According to NBC News, Evanston passed a fair housing ordinance in 1969.

The plan is this: If you were a black resident of Evanston between 1919 and 1969, or can claim your parents or grandparents were, you could be eligible to receive a $25,000 grant toward an element of home ownership — either receiving money to purchase a house, pay your mortgage or make home improvements.

This is the first phase of a $10 million reparations plan put in place by the Chicago suburb to be paid for with a 3 percent tax on marijuana sales. The initial grants will come from a $400,000 pool.

“I thought that we, as a city, might localize a reparative policy to empower the black community and help rebuild wealth that had been stripped away due to predatory practices and other anti-black practices,” Robin Rue Simmons, the Evanston alderwoman behind the initiative, told Newsweek.

(snip)

Already, however, the proposal is experiencing headwinds from an activist group that says the reparations, in their current form, are themselves “racist.”

It’s unclear how much pull Evanston Rejects Racist Reparations will end up having in the eventual discussion over the reparations program, but the community group has a sizable enough following on Facebook  — 500 followers in less than a month — and, according to the Daily Northwestern, the group is organized Sebastian Nalls, a 2020 Evanston mayoral candidate.

“Black voices are not being heard, and they believe that what is on the table are not real reparations,” Nalls said in an interview with the newspaper of Northwestern University, published March 3.

In a March 2 Facebook statement, the group said the scope of the reparations is inadequate and it would enrich banks, which the group blamed for the housing inequities in the first place.

“To qualify for the reparations program, an individual must be the descendants of residents that lived in Evanston between 1919-1969 and/or evidence that they had faced racial disparities. Racial harm deserving of repair did not begin or end in those windows of time,” the statement read.

Even with the $25,000, it noted, “residents would still need a large influx of cash for any down payment and have good credit to secure any mortgage from banks. The forces that had been historically benefiting from the racist policies of redlining and housing discrimination are now benefiting from a program aimed at undoing their harm.”

“ALL Black residents of Evanston have been exposed to racism and are owed repair, but creators of the program say the limited impact of the current proposal is because of the size of the fund,” the statement continued.

“However, this only reinforces our claim that the proposed program is incomplete and deserves more community involvement. The lack of community input has resulted in a reparations plan that would be detrimental to Black people and the larger movement.

“We have come together as residents to fight against fake reparations. We reject racist reparations and demand a better, more responsive, more complete program that provides access to reparations acts of actual repair to Black folks. “

So, then, what will proper reparations look like?

“This is not fully in scope and fully beneficial to the black community,” Nalls, 20, told NBC News.

“Reparations is not just payment towards individuals that have been targeted by inequalities, but it’s also proving the harm that took place will not take place again and ensuring that more harm will not be caused.”

Based on just that quote alone, the idea of “reparations” sounds an awful lot like a blank check.

The City Council’s vote on the $25,000 plan is expected to take place March 22, but the opposition highlights two invariable issues we’ll see with any attempt at reparations, local or national.

bc3b – Northwestern (Evanston) is a great road game if you are a Big Ten football fan. Problem is that there is no where to eat. Got to go to Skokie to get something to eat.

As far as liberal crap holes paying for reparations – go for it. All of us conservatives will opt out by not being in those crap holes.

NY will have a hard time paying for reparations if it’s paying 2 grand a month ubi to everyone so they don’t have to work, but maybe it can rely on stimmy bailouts.

Actually as we’re already seeing eventually there is no income left to tax so they know they have to go after property you already own even though you already paid taxes on all of it previously.

Even more incentive to avoid some of these powder keg states.

Was listening to tales of Weimar in that Preston interview from last thread. The one they were talking about is a man who wanted to get his life savings out of bank. I think he wanted to emigrate or something.

He had 50 grand in Marx, which was about 150 grand in US dollars today money.

He couldn’t get the money out of the bank because of capital controls and regulations that went into effect during the “crisis.” He petitioned and asked to be sent his money.

The bank finally complied 6 months later sending him 50000 Marx, and at that point, they were even generous enough to pay the stamp fee that has risen to 75000 Marx per stamp on the enveloped. Which begs the question do you trust the government?

You may be right. Civil War casualties are estimated. 625,000 is on the low end. If there are more killed in all other wars combined, it would haven’t equaled the Civil War until Vietnam.

Jim, et al, the Civil War had more TOTAL deaths that WWII (~655,000 vs 405,399), but slightly fewer COMBAT deaths (~215,000 vs 291,557)

In both wars death by “other causes” (disease, infection, etc) was as much or more than combat deaths

But by all accounts, the country already PAID “reparations”. Still, anybody who was an ACTUAL slave in the United States is entitled to reparations from anybody who ACTUALLY owned slaves. 🙂
Individuals falling into those two categories would be approximately 155 years old…give or take.

My ancestor died in Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg. He fell to mini balls in the shoulder and abdomen, died 24 days later in a Union field hospital. He was 27. Townspeople of Gettysburg buried him a marked grave. After the war, the Daughters of the Confederacy brought him back for burial in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.

He never owned a slave. Had a peanut farm where he and his seven year old son were the only labor.

This past weekend, Hollywood Cemetery was vandalized, many markers damaged or destroyed, among them Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler.

My wife’s company is going crazy over diversity and inclusion. Senior managers bonus 50% judged on hiring minorities. A minority has to be part of each interview team.
Customers? Product quality? Making a profit? Distant priorities.

I wonder if this is a factor–
I used to own shares of stock and I could vote them when various elections occurred.
Now I own mutual funds, ETFs, indexes, etc. I bet the shares are voted by Schwab or Fidelity or Vanguard. If the fund manager is a progressive Dem, maybe he votes them according to his personal beliefs? Or maybe they all just get proxied to back up management? Certainly they are not consulting me to get my opinion.
Also, each firm has an ESG rating that judges them for social justice, sustainability and morality. If a fund refuses to buy companies that make a lot of money but have low ESG, that could be a lever to force firms to submit to political correctness.

my GG-grandfather, John Jackson Collins, was in Company “C” of the 18th Texas Infantry. He fought honorably, including in the battle described below in an 1875 newspaper article. He later applied for a U.S. War Department pension when the government allowed Confederate soldiers to do so. It was granted in 1900…he died 5 years later at the age of 89 (though he might have been 92 🙂 ) He never owned a slave…barely owned a mule.

June 15, 1863 – Battle – Roundaway Bayou, north of Richmond, Louisiana, (20 miles west of Vicksburg) –The 18th Texas Infantry crossed the bayou and charged the much superior enemy force at the point of the bayonet. One account summed up this engagement this way:

The ground was covered with their dead and wounded…The 18th Texas Infantry…crossed the bayou and charged the enemy at the point of the bayonet, driving them pell-mell into the timber. They were panic-stricken, as they never stopped to resist the charge of the brave 500. Although their numbers exceeded 18,000, under command of one of their ablest generals, General Davis, they anticipated that they were ambushed…. This charge made by the 18th will compare favorably with any regimental charge that has ever been recorded.” Blessington, Joseph P. It is estimated that between 20-25% of the population is on some psychomatic maintenance regimen. When the PoPo come for the guns, be calm, the people off the meds will provide plenty of action and counter action that will whittle down the forces of the State.

I find Dalio’s ongoing discussion of a 100 year debt cycle that is towards the end of the cycle to be increasing interesting.

The money is always worthless at the end.

We are definitely seeing asset inflation and it’s a question of when we see eventually see cpi inflation

100% accurate…and 100% frightening. Our military is being used as a Social-Justice petri dish…and nothing more.

or load up the bass boat with all your guns, and plenty of beer…and go night-fishing! Who knows, you too could have a “tragic boating accident”. 🙂

JR – think positive about our military being used as a Social-Justice petri dish…and nothing more.

If we have to go to war against our military, this Social-Justice petri dish may play to our advantage.

gnqanq, agree…except the Chinese (et al) are watching our military be dismantled. How long will they wait until they attack?? Not long, I fear.

With all the spies they are finding attached to CongressCritters it is probably a good thing we have a fence around the capitol building. Keep them in, rather than us out.

Karma Wheel about to turn again. AmAir in the SJW cross-hairs because they let John Kerry fly without a mask. The mob wants him barred from flights.

I am surprised to learn that Kerry even flies commercial….

57, do you know the origination of the vid?
There are identifiable silhouettes and voices in the reporter’s scrum. Seems like one of them could speak up if it was a fake. I’m wondering if it could be a false flag to prove we are easily fooled thus we’re wrong about everything.
