    2010…

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way – in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

What I think the year will bring:

Ruth Bader Ginsburg will retire from the Supreme Court, and is replaced by either Elena Kagan or Diane Wood.

Various events will vindicate yet again my decision last year to change my party registration from Republican to independent: John McCain will survive his primary challenge, Mitch McConnell will remain leader of the Senate Republicans, and

David Cameron will become prime minister of the U.K., thereby giving false hope to what little of the right remains in that country.

The cause of so-called campaign-finance reform will suffer a significant, but not fatal, defeat in the United States Supreme Court. A victory for liberty, but not of the dance-in-the-streets kind.

Illegal immigrants will continue to flood the country, thereby pulling us ever closer to the inevitable day that the GOP becomes a national political irrelevancy.

Liberal Republicans will continue to insist that turning left on amnesty for illegal immigrants will draw Hispanics to become Republican, ignoring (as they always ignore) two inconvenient facts: (1) that didn’t work when we tried it in 1986, leaving no reason to think it’ll work in the future; and (2) Hispanics, like blacks, have for generations been casting votes based on economic issues (where they’re very liberal) and not based on social issues (where they’re conservative).

Stupidity will still be the ultimate power in our politics.

so for 2010 I predict that on 9/12 about 3 million people will decent upon DC to protest the government… and the MSM will ignore the story except to saw tourism is up in DC for the the summer…

I predict that Fox News viewership will increase by another 15% — Glenn Beck will surpass BOR in ratings, and the Congress will begin working on the silencing talk radio with re-introduction of the (un)Fairness Doctrine.

More newspapers will cease printing a paper copy and ZERO will try to bail out the newspapers including the NYT.

I predict that the media will continue to be bias and parrot the WH line that Bush is to blame.

justrand – Thanks for the welcome, but I must confess that I lurk here often and have posted from time to time. It’s encouraging that there are so many sites full of similar sentiment!

Bumr50, I don’t embrace all of Ayn Rand’s philosophies…but in ‘Atlas Shrugged’ she so presaged our current situation that it was a natural basis for this and other sites. As I wrote in my original essay (still linked at the top of the site if you click “About”) we need each of us to Be John Galt in our own way in order to retain the liberties we still have, and regain those we’ve lost. The creeping intrusion by the government into every area of our lives has become a tidal wave, and one that Barack Obama seems intent on surfing!

    Amen.

My father gave me my first copy of ‘Atlas Shrugged’ almost five full years before I read it (app. three years ago.)

The similarities to our current situation are positively uncanny.

I’ve since passed my copy on to someone who’s struggling with addiction, but a reader clearly bothered by what’s going on to our nation. I’m hoping that it enlightens them in the same way that it enlightened me.

I received a new copy for Christmas, but will continue to pass them along if I keep encountering young people confused about how statist solutions affect our way of life, the best and most fair in recorded history.

I’ve seen many a young person suckered by the false ‘intellect’ of Bill Maher types who are clever enough to disguise their disgust for capitalism with seemingly witty banter.

The culture war needs to be addressed by more than the moralizing Pat Buchanans of the world. Glenn Beck is a good start, but just the tip of a much needed iceberg to sink HMS Socialistic.

    Predictions for 2010 on 1/1/2010:

HC has an 80/20 percentage of passing. I’m giving the 20% because of the house, in that they might not be able to reconcile the Senate Bill with their members.

Amnesty and cap & trade are dead for 2010.

Commercial real estate falls off the edge, and there is another round of home foreclosures by April.

    The unemployment rate hits 11%

Obama’s numbers tank even more, into the low 40’s. And, like JM said it only makes him testier —> aka more defensive and thin-skinned.

    Janet N. resigns.

Israel does a strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The current Iranian govt. is overthrown.

We have a terrorist attack that does not fail, which makes people even more insecure about the Obama Administration.

There is a GOP/tea party landslide in November, resulting in at least the House changing hands…perhaps even the Senate.

More newspapers will fail as the internet thrives.

Finally I think the uneasiness and lack of prosperity will pull the family unit and friends closer. People will also turn more to religion or some higher power, as events outside of themselves are more out of their control.

Here in California there will be a 7. or higher earthquake on the west coast. Somewhere along the San Andreas Fault is where I’m predicting the epicenter will be.

I don’t think 2010 will fun. However, it feels like a corrective year where mindsets and changes in the culture will start to take place.

    We’ll see…….
