McCain 2008 Opposition File on Romney

2012 January 18

Via Andy Kaczynski—below the fold.

I’ve read some conjecture that it’s not authentic, however, at BuzzFeed Kaczynski writes that some of it had already been posted at RedState, and he links to a RedState pdf. In Erick Erickson’s Mitt Romney: The Magically Malleable Man of Mystery of October 31, 2011, he stated the McCain opposition book was given to him twice, and he quotes from it—enough, in my opinion, to corroborate the authenticity of the document from Kaczynski.

Some of it’s well-known, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t news especially because of its concentrated form and the juxtaposition of dates and quotes. While I knew of Romney’s various views on abortion, I didn’t know he’d varied his opinion/label within a ten day span. From pages 20–21:

In Early 2007, Romney Gave South Carolina Audiences Conflicting Answers On His Abortion Position

Romney In South Carolina, January 29:

“Over the last multiple years, as you know, I have been effectively pro-choice … I never called myself that as a label but I was effectively pro-choice and that followed a personal experience in my extended family that led to that conclusion.”
(Bruce Smith, “Romney Campaigns In SC With Sen. DeMint,” The Associated Press, 1/30/07)

Romney In South Carolina, February 8:

“I am firmly pro-life … I was always for life.”
(Jim Davenport, “Romney Affirms Abortion Opposition During Stop In SC,” The Associated Press, 2/8/07)

Seriously…with one BILLION bucks (and at least that much more in PAC and Union money)…Obama is going to use ALL this to filet Romney!

And Romney is CRAP at fighting back.

Newt is flawed as hell, folks. BUT, he is a UFC champ at fighting back!!!

Today Bill Clinton took swipes at…GINGRICH! Why? Because Bill and the rest of the Dems WANT and NEED Romney.

Tomorrow night’s debate should be “interesting! 🙂

btw…how DARE the Republicans have a debate on Thursday!!!

Thursday is named after the Norse god Thor. In the Norse languages this day is called Torsdag.

Hence the Republicans are (a) pagans, (b) WARLIKE and (c) having this debate on a VERY Anglo-Saxon day (I mean, NORSE…come on!!)

(just in case ya’ll missed the Democrats having a snit fit over the Republicans DARING to have a debate on MLK Day…even though the Democrats had THEIR debate on MLK Day in 2008).

I wonder if Reagan – who supposedly was campaigning as a “moderate”, would have the same record on same-sex issues that Romney does.

    I think not.

Oh – and I wonder how his stances on same-sex issues fit in with his Mormon faith . . . . seems to me he would be against Prop 8 out here in California, even though the various LDS organizations did try to garner support to get it passed. Seems like he would be in defiance of his own faith . . .

The U. S. S.. Constitution (Old Ironsides), as a combat vessel, carried 48,600 gallons of fresh water for her crew of 475 officers and men. This was sufficient to last six months of sustained operations at sea. She carried no evaporators (i.e. fresh water distillers).

However, let it be noted that according to her ship’s log, “On July 27, 1798, the U.S.S. Constitution sailed from Boston with a full complement of 475 officers and men, 48,600 gallons of fresh water, 7,400 cannon shot, 11,600 pounds of black powder and 79,400 gallons of rum.”

Her mission: “To destroy and harass English shipping.”

Making Jamaica on 6 October, she took on 826 pounds of flour and 68,300 gallons of rum.
Then she headed for the Azores , arriving there 12 November.. She provisioned with 550 pounds of beef and 64,300 gallons of Portuguese wine.

On 18 November, she set sail for England . In the ensuing days she defeated five British men-of-war and captured and scuttled 12 English merchant ships, salvaging only the rum aboard each.

By 26 January, her powder and shot were exhausted. Nevertheless, although unarmed she made a night raid up the Firth of Clyde in Scotland . Her landing party captured a whisky distillery and transferred 40,000 gallons of single malt Scotch aboard by dawn. Then she headed home.
The U. S. S. Constitution arrived in Boston on 20 February 1799, with no cannon shot, no food, no powder, no rum, no wine, no whisky, and 38,600 gallons of water.

Maybe we should reinstitute the rum ration….

JM, you’re welcome. I like the Scribd docs because you can scroll up and down and read whatever you like without reloading, uploading or downloading anything.

Many of the references are things we’ve read or heard about, but there are some things that were new to me. As I said, the concentration and juxtaposition make it tough to defend that Romney has settled into consistent policy.

From the contents, there’s an issue there for everyone! 🙂 Don’t miss health care starting on page 100!

    We have the following choices:
    * Two totally unprincipled candidates – neither of whom is a true conservative and both of whom would sell us out in a heartbeat
    * A more principled conservative who could put a kindergarten class back to sleep again right after they arose from nap time.
    * A man who can’t remember three things from his campaign plan on national TV

JR #24 – according to allahpundit over at HA yesterday, Perry was ranked 3rd – IN TEXAS.

Meanwhile, Sheila Jackson-Lee is off her meds again:

Let’s do a little math Sheila: blacks make up how much of the population? According to the 2010 U.S. census, it’s 12.6%. Latinos make up how much of the population? 16.3%.

    Non-Hispanic whites? 63.7%

Persons below poverty level in 2009? 14.3%

Using statistics alone makes her argument null and void.

Darlin’ that race card has been pulled way too much – and is now worth about as much as the proverbial paper it is printed upon.

One of my favorite quotes about Sheila:

“Rumor has it that Sheila Jackson Lee is actually Cynthia McKinney on meds. This is as well as she gets.

You should have seen her when she was Maxine Waters!”

Trust me, they and the DNC watched the debate the other night too…and they are deathly afraid of having Newt rip Obama and the media apart on National TV during the Prensidential debates.

They KNOW, as we do, that Obama can dance all around Romney and not break a sweat.

ABC went to Newt’s ex-wife to try and get some Newt STOPPERS…and they appear to think they have them. We’ll see.

Oh, and don’t forget…in October there will all of a sudden surface “something about Romney”. If it’s true it will happen early in October…if it’s false it will happen late…too late to be refuted. But it WILL happen!

27 – To be honest if I was abc I would hold the piece with a person with a known agenda till sunday morning, then run it. I get all the ratings associated with the primary that may be getting closer, and then I air this after to crush any potential upset that happen in SC or if no upset happened create a new firestorm heading into FL all the while being able to say I rightfully held it for a few days so close to the primary. Course the leaking to drudge part is brilliant cause it’s like airing it early and still getting to claim otherwise.

Look at the attack on Palin in 2008. Meanwhile, MSM failed to provide coverage on Barack Obama, Sr., Frank Marshall, Little Barack’s time in Indeonesia, at Pepperdine, at Columbia (when he was supposedly involved with socialist groups), as a community organizer, as a member of the Illinois State Senate, Tony Rezko, Moo-Chelle’s $319k a year job, his association with Rev. My guess is that she would have done it without any compensation. I have read her statement “I could end his career with a single interview” long before anyone took Newt’s candidacy seriously.

There are a lot of rumors about Newt having affairs or one-nighters with a number of women during his marriages (and dating back to the 1970s). We will see what comes out when the interview is airred.

Of the Seven Deadly sins, Mitt majored in Avarice & Greed while Newt dabbled in a number of them.

The most damning thing Maryanne could do is to drop a bombshell on Newt that wasn’t sexual, perhaps something related to ethics that wasn’t sexual. Wives know a great deal about men’s lives – including a lot of things we think they don’t know.

As vindictive as Maryanne seems, she probably started building a diary the moment she suspected Newt of infidility, perhaps even before Callista.

That one hurt. About her though? I hope she is happy with herself. Same with Newt’s ex. If an ex of mine were running in an election against someone as horrid as Obama- I would consider myself to be a traitor to my country for putting myself and my drama over the needs of the American people. Their need for attention had better pay off for Romney (don’t read into that because I think you know what I mean), but I still don’t think it will.

You may laugh at this, but in the month before the election, all that needs to be trumpeted by the media is that Romney is a Mormon. Nothing good/bad about Mormonism needs to be said, either. Just that he is one. The Evangelical community wouldn’t vote for him last time around because of that, and that was without the reminder. If they did tear apart the religion though? It would be line by line, lmao because these same folks in the media dismiss muslims entirely as peaceful without even making a peep as to what they really believe. Do Evangelicals want Obama out? Yes, but do not underestimate the giant negative that his Mormonism actually is. FWIW Obama calls himself a Christian. Actions, schmactions, I know. Just sayin.

I have known a number of Mormons in my life. Most have been good people. I remember in the Chicago suburbs 25 years ago when my wife had a baby and a neighbor that we didn’t know all that well brought over a dinner she had cooked. She was Mormon; we are not. When I has head of the homeowners association, the Mormons just completed a temple on the edge of our subdivision and invited us to use their facilities for our meetings.

Mormons stick together and help one another succeed, which is probably why they are so successful. The Marriotts helped George Romney, which is why Mitt’s real name is Willard. I worked with a Mormom woman who was sick over the fact her daughter was attending a local public university when “Mormons can go to Brigham Young practically for no cost.”

My experiences with Mormons have been positive, but I am sure MSM will be emphasizing polygamy, etc.

Romney is the best of the bad lot. Newt is no better on the issues. The cranky old white guy routine would wear thin after awhile. Romney brings the money, the sharp mind (sharp at Newt), the clean moral history, and the history of turning things around.

He comes with liablities: rich, gov in MA, and his faith may be an issue with some.

But his positive are better than the other candidates positives and his negatives are fewer than other candidates negatives. He will do. A strong GOP congress will keep him straight.

I am opposed to people coming here but not for the reason’s you might expect. There is the issue called carrying capacity of any given country. At the present time we would be incapable of having 700m people in this country, double the present population. So regardless of the timeline or lack of goddies Paul might envision doubling of the population in less than decade is not only possible but likely. Think most of the Carribean basin emptying out and coming here. It would be an economic disaster.

Not only that, but I could envision a planned population assault being organized by a foreign power to make something like that happen. A WMD of unskilled people.

Good point ip. I have often wondered what would have happened had the South won the Civil War or at least fought to a draw. The Confederacy didn’t want to control the North; it simply wanted independence. There likely result would have been two countries – the Union and the Confederacy. Slavery probably would not have lasted past 1900 as it would have been economically infeasible.

I cannot believe the Confederacy could possible be as screwed up as the United States is today.

  177. 2012 January 18 8:10 pm

The industrialization/mechanization of farming would have made slavery obsolete.
The north and the south would have come to terms as allies when foreign powers

The weird thing is that I can remember all three of his children from the second wife. That’s always been mind-boggling to me–to think that I spoke with those who spoke with him.

O/T Biden Tells SF Crowd “Giants are going to the Super Bowl”

Vice President Joe Biden had his “oops” moment Wednesday speaking in a 49er-crazed San Francisco when he told a crowd at a city political fundraiser that “the Giants are on their way to the Super Bowl.”

Biden spoke at a closed event in the city’s financial District at the Bently Reserve when he made the gaffe, according to a White House pool report released today.
The comment by Biden drew immediate “good-natured” boos from the crowd, according to the report by Josh Richman of the Oakland Tribune, who was the only local print reporter allowed to cover the event.
After suggesting that the Giants were heading to the Super Bowl, Biden quickly recognized the gaffe and and explained he was accustomed to thinking in terms of the San Francisco Giants and their baseball wins. His next reference was to the “49ers on their way” to the Big Game.

For those of you that are not familiar with sports: this Sunday, the New York Giants play the San Francisco 49ers and the winner will go to the Super Bowl. San Francisco’s baseball team is also called the Giants, who moved from New York to San Francisco in 1956.

“Now the non-profit political watchdog web site has revealed that Senator Reid has received the most money in campaign donations from the various special interest groups that are supporting SOPA and PIPA. The site claims that Reid has received a total of $3,502,624 from those groups. That number is well ahead of the number two and number three Senators on the list, Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand. Schumer and Gillibrand are two of the official sponsors of PIPA.

By contrast, Senator Reid only received $339,226 from special interest groups that publicly oppose PIPA and SOPA, according to the web site.

Special interest groups throwing money at politicians for campaign donations is nothing new, of course. However, Senator Reid’s massive campaign donations from these pro-PIPA groups may be part of the reason why he still wants the bill to be voted on next week, even as other Senators are trying to distance themselves from PIPA.”

    Romney Job Claims Questioned

Now Romney claimed he created 100,000 or at least helped. Who helped Romney? The countless other investors in Staples (hint: US taxpayers) and other organizations, okay we could count them but my rough guess is at least 100,000 or so other direct investors and probably at least 100 other equity investment firms. Yes, Romney sat on the Boards of Directors, along with many others and this was before Sarbanes-Oxley when heightened liability attached.

The impression he is giving voters is that he alone created these jobs.

Now Newt has claimed that he

When I was speaker, we added 11 million jobs, in a bipartisan effort, including welfare reform, the largest capital gains tax cut in history. We balanced the budget for four straight years..

Newt is the only candidate in the race for the Republican nomination who has led a national movement to elect a Republican majority and then actually achieved substantial conservative reforms of the federal government, including welfare reform, balanced budgets, and tax cuts. These historic reforms liberated the American people to create 11 million new jobs in just four years.

    Romney critizes Newt’s job claims

Okay so Newt as the leader of 435 member house, working with the 100 member Senate, 1 President and his administration created the regulatory and tax environment where 26 million jobs were added (11 under Clinton and 15 under Reagan)

So how is it that Romney can claim he “helped” create 100k jobs (which some say is an untenable claim) and yet Newt can’t say he “helped” create 26 million jobs.

Like it or not political administrations always claim credit for job creation. Clinton claims he created 11 million jobs, Obama keeps claiming any number of jobs, and Bush created jobs…we all claim.
