Somehow BC I think the Colo bill would be over turned on appeal in fed district. Its a total ban on a firearm that Heller pretty much makes impossible. We shall see.

The heller decision left the door wide open for outlawing

#1 There are cities there that have a pit bull ban as well. They destroy perfectly harmless animals because of breed discrimination. That was, believe it or not, one of the reasons we scratched Co off our list. The cities we were considering were doing this. Not shocked to hear that they are discriminating against something else that they have no clue about.

I love dogs, but I am not sure I have a problem with a pit bull ban. People have far more control over guns they own than pit bulls they own. Guns don’t indiscriminately run down the street attacking children, the elderly, men women, other animals, etc.

I have read dozens (hundreds) of stories about “harmless” pitt bulls that suddenly have gone beserk and killed a child (often in the owner’s family).

Google “pit bull kills ….” Then Google “collie kills ….” You’ll see what I mean.

That is because the story gets more attention with pit than other breeds- it is kind of like when you read this awful story about a politician and have to scroll alllllllllll the way down to the bottom in order to find out it is a democrat- those are the ‘collie bites’.

Its the combination of temperament and capability that places a breed in a certain position. Breeds like Pit Bulls, Boxers, Wolf Hounds, Bernards, Blood Hounds have the equipment to maul quite easily. Size, bite force say so. Now given a particular owner any of these breeds can be made man killers. I would also observe that Cocker Spaniels have a higher temperament disorder rate that any other breed but you don’t hear them in the press as man killers. Cockers just don’t have the physical equipment.

Now teacup chihuahuas I keep my eyes open for those suckers.

I would agree with you on Cocker Spaniels; had one once and would never have one again. Plus they require a lot of handling.

Best dog I ever had was a beagle mix that I got from the Animal Shelter. Great with adults and children, very smart and very low maintenance.

Bad owners are the problem more than the dogs. You can breed ANY dog to be aggressive, but you have to try really hard to get a pit to be agressive towards people, because it goes against their nature. They can be aggressive towards other dogs, but believe it or not- are not the best guard dogs, because they don’t want to hurt people. Often times, the stories that come out with a pit attack, are ones where the dog has been subjected to abuse or neglect. Bad owners.

Bad people own guns too, but it isn’t the guns that are bad.

Well, you also get the jackwagons that want a badass dog and hear of the pit bull, get one and train it to be vicious. Michael Vick? I remember back in the 70s the scary dog was the doberman, but I’ve faced those down. Ten more years, we’ll probably have something else to fear. I’ve heard of plenty of pit bulls that were perfectly gentle and stayed that way. Those just don’t make the news.

JM – When you get in a hole, stop digging. As drdog09 stated, some breeds have a tendency toward visciousness and pit bulls have the strength to carry it off.

The only dog that ever came after me was a mastiff. That will wake you up. I was walking my golden in an unfamiliar neighborhood. Fortunately, the owner got to him in time.

JM has a good point. Dogs respond to the way they are treated or to pack behavior. Many pit bulls are owned by people who could care less about them. They pick up on that.

That being said, I don’t trust them for the most part.

My family are Dachshund owners. Have had 7 since I was a kid. Now if you don’t set the expectation of who is `alpha` (you) in the group you might as well put them down. They have a temperament that can be as bad as a mean treated pit bull and can tear you up pretty bad as well. That and they are extremely hard to retrain. Great with kids and we never had to worry about strangers if the kids were with the dogs. They would just latch onto some body part and won’t let go. 🙂

Well JM, I don’t have any experience with MS-13, the Diciples or the Bloods, either. But, common sense tells me that a kid that is a member of MS-13 isn’t more likely to get in trouble than a kid who doesn’t belong to a gang. Ona breed that isn’t even in the top 10 most populat breeds in the country is responsible for 50% – 70% of all deaths due to dog attacks every year for the the past eight years.

I love dogs and have had many throughout my life, but there are some breeds we would be better off without.

Gun vs Pitbull = pretty clear outcome, no need to ban either.

I’m against any city\town wide ban on typical types of pets, or even not so typical.
For the record I’ve never owned a pet myself. I did kill a neighbors dog once that was attacking\biting me when I was like 10 or 11, I just fixed the glitch after getting him off of me (self defense *cough*), I don’t think it was a pitbull though it was smaller.

#54 This is true, but when it comes to a ban, the argument used is ‘something bad might happen, therefore we should ban it’ and it is completely unfair. This is how the topic got raised. CO towns were knocking on doors and taking dogs from homes. These dogs had done nothing wrong, they were slaughtered based on their breed and worse- they were killed based on characteristics, meaning that you could have a dog who slightly resembled a pit and it was still killed. They killed family pets because ‘maybe’, just like they want to ban guns because ‘maybe’.

Little secret about Mr. Morgan and his little gun crusade. The Dunblane School shooting occurred in 1996. Morgan was editor of the Daily Mirror at the time. He made it a crusade to ban hand guns subsequently. Not because it was good politics but because the readership rate at the Mirror rose significantly. He was in it for the money. He is doing the same thing here. Why does he single out AR-15s? Its not because they are statistically that dangerous. Of all shootings they are very low according to FBI stats. Its because they are low statistically that he does so. By getting them banned he achieves getting all those other weapons banned that are higher up on the list. Another words Morgan is replaying a publishing formula that worked for him in the past.

The man is money monger with no principles.

#68 It is an issue of personal responsibility, that is all. I am just as pissed about people using Adam Lanza as an excuse to ban all “assault style” guns, because, really, anything can be used to assault someone, which is a backdoor to a complete ban. This original conversation came about because of CO wanting to ban the pump shotgun. Why? Why ban it and not swimming pools? Your child is more likely to drown in the family pool than die by the family gun, and yet, folks seek after pool homes. I didn’t bring it up about the pools, because they didn’t ban pools, they banned and subsequently slaughtered pits. Harmless family pets were taken from their homes because of a breed ban. Similarly, Joe Schmoe just trying to protect his home is now being threatened with the loss of his shotgun through no fault of his own. Liberty means nothing to people anymore. New Yorkers are complaining about the soda ban…really? You’ll complain about a soda and not the countless other rights you don’t have? Folks complaining about Obama’s Star Trek mix-up that said nothing about Benghazi…I’m just saying. I do happen to love pits, but it isn’t clouding my judgement on liberty.
