Marine Fired for Lowering Flag on Memorial Day

by drdog09

A former U.S. Marine said Friday he was fired from his contract job with Time Warner Cable in Charlotte after he lowered the American flag to half-staff on Memorial Day.

Allen Thornwell, 29, was thinking about his best friend, a former Marine who he said killed himself two years ago when he returned to the U.S., the Charlotte Observer reported.

The paper reported that Thornwell was fired Tuesday. The service that arranged the job for Thornwell said Time Warner told them they were disturbed by what was termed as “passion for the flag and (his) political affiliation.”

Thornwell said he remains in shock over his firing. Murphy Archibald, Thornwell’s attorney, said his client should have never lost his job.

“It’s disgraceful,” Archibald, who is a Vietnam vet, told the Observer. “He didn’t do anything wrong. He’s a veteran working on Memorial Day who corrected what he thought was a disrespectful flying of the American flag … I would have taken it down myself.”

I would fire TWC but its the only game in town in our locale. TWC do the right thing and hire this Marine back if he wants it. There are principles higher than your stupid corporate rules.

It used to be that there were things in life that required no answers, no explanations, it was just DONE. This was one. Not anymore.

Too funny:Thinking they were assaulting Trump supporters, a rowdy group of Bernie Sanders fans accidentally beat up another group of Bernie supporters.

    Insane in the membrane:

Luxembourg (AFP) – EU countries cannot imprison illegal migrants just for crossing borders inside the passport-free Schengen area, the bloc’s top court ruled Tuesday, in a new blow to efforts to crack down on the migration crisis.

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) in Luxembourg said that European Union rules prevent the jailing of non-EU migrants who have illegally crossed a frontier if they have not already been subject to deportation procedures.

drdog, TWC, et al, are not the only game in town in many locales…so hopefully this gets some wide dissemination. It IS disgraceful…but par for the PC mentality that infests our society.

p.s. I saw the comment on the previous thread regarding the soon-to-be official status of the MoT !!! Forward to 1984, Comrades!!

So it’s ok to fire someone in the private sector for their passion for a flag and their political affiliation but it’s not ok to suggest there might be some bias from a public position like say..oh a judge , based on their own passion for a flag and political affiliation…even when that affiliation is one that advocates breaking us law.

My wife’s father was aboard the USS Pasadena at that point. They supported the invasion, but didn’t get hit by any kamikazes.

Had we needed to invade Japan, imagine that kamikaze raid times 1000…for that is what it would have been! The a-bombs most likely saved my wife’s father’s life…and thus hers and my sons!

#22 just got back from voting. Polls were pretty quiet here as well. 4 people inside, me and one other dropping off absentee ballots. (I live in a rural area and only absentee, but I always drop it off at a poll to make sure it doesn’t get lost!!) One person coming in as I left. Of course, we are always pretty slow for a primary since our vote usually doesn’t matter. Will be interesting to see what happens in Nov though because there are usually lines for the general election. Not a lot of them speak English, but they stand in line. We are in a very conservative rural small town, but there are a lot of grove workers in the surrounding area.

  26. 2016 June 7 7:45 pm

Renee gone… good.. maybe eph will calm down now, probably not -lol.

  27. 2016 June 7 7:57 pm

fyi – NJ Trump smashed it turn-out wise.
    2012 – total votes 226, Romney -184k (81%)
    2016 – total votes 392 (only 78% in) Trump 317k+ (81%)

    SD –
    2012 51k – Romney 33k (66%)
    2016 – 51k (80% reporting) – Trump 34k (67%)

    NM –
    2012 ~91k – Romney 67k (73%)
    2016 ~55k (47% reporting) ; Trump (73%)

    MT –
    2012- 139k – Romney 96k (69%)
    2016 – 42k (26% reporting) Trump 34k (72%)

So if you hear a talking head talking about %’s keep in mind what romney got at the same time of the year last round in a no where near as contested race.

It is kind of amazing to me that Clinton has the margin she does in CA. I have literally seen 1 Hillary bumper sticker. Bernie is every where. I see his stickers, people posting on FB, and even yard signs. Mostly young people. I wonder if they lost motivation to go to the polls since it has been declared over. Good thing though, because all the mini-socialists were starting to scare me.

MPT – ” Against this backdrop, the only real thing that Hillary has going for her is that she continues to out poll Trump by low to high single digit numbers”

That’s all it takes in about 10 states that in theory matter, hillary as far more options to getting to 270 than does trump.
NV\NM\CO\IA\OH\VA\NH\PA\NC\MI (at this point nothing else
She starts with around 18 states locked hard 3 soft (mi\co\pa) and 251 votes… she only needs on average three of those 10 or so competitive states (in some cases 4). FL and PA and she wins, OH an PA.. and NM she wins; VA,OH,CO she wins; PA\VA and nm\co it goes to the house; VA\PA\CO\NV she wins; PA\OH\NV\NM she wins; PA\VA\IA\CO she wins, FL\CO\NV\NM she wins..etc..etc..
GOP starts with 22 states locked and 2 soft favorite (az and nc) and 206. (play around) You’d rather be her than him, at least right now.

    Speaking of numbers

    NJ – effectively done.
    2012 – total votes 226k, Romney -184k (~81%)
    2016 – total votes 444k ( 92% in) Trump 350k (~81%)

    SD – effectively done
    2012 – total 51k – Romney 33k (~66%)
    2016 – total 67k (99% reporting) – Trump 45k (~67%)

    NM – nearly done.
    2012 – total ~91k – Romney 67k (~73%)
    2016 – total ~104k (*95% reporting) – 74k Trump (~71%)

    MT – pending
    2012 – total 139k – Romney 96k (~69%)
    2016 – total 147k (*85% reporting) – Trump 108k (74%)

    CA – pending
    2012 – total 1,666k – Romney 1,328k (~80%)
    2016 – total 1,151k (*45% reporting) – Trump 883k (~77%)

Side note: In CA – Ben Carson got 3.2% and Gilmore got 0.7% , combined they received 44k votes so far.
