Should I Apply??

Imagine if a major foreign newspaper – let’s say based in Germany or Russia or somewhere in Europe – hired journalists to cover United States politics, culture, and the economy, and sent them to its bureau in Washington D.C., but they couldn’t speak English and perhaps had never visited America even once in their lives.

Thankfully we’ve never heard of such a case, however, the reverse scenario has become all too common: one can walk into the foreign bureaus of the Washington Post or New York Times or Wall Street Journal in places ranging from Beirut to Jerusalem to Moscow and encounter American journalists who claim to cover the intricacies of local politics and events but who can’t speak the language or have little to no experience of the country they’re supposed to cover.

But it’s no secret that mainstream media has long valued ideology over expertise – so foreign language proficiency or any level of local expertise for that matter need not apply. And this is literally the case, proudly advertised for the world to see, as the Wall Street Journal is seeking to fill its vacant Moscow Bureau Chief position.

Want to head up the WSJ’s Moscow bureau?

Wifey knows the perfect apartment block just 4 blocks from the ‘office’. Just about right for those Russian winters. (By the way Moscow has had no snow on the ground this season.) To bad I don’t believe in Russiagate.

But this piece is just indicative of the problem with American networks — too few boots on the ground. Moscow is Russia’s political center but St. Petersburg is its soul. Volgograd, Kazan, Vladivostok are critical regional centers if you want to get a pulse of the country. A news organization needs a presence in all these cities but it won’t happen with an American network.

This is nothing new. Going back to the 1920s and 1930s the New York Times had Walter Duranty covering Russia. Duranty wrote glowingly of the Soviet Union and stated that stories about people dying of starvation in the Ukraine and other parts of the Soviet Union were lies. Duranty was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting, which was later proven to be lies.

Duranty’s Pulitzer was never recinded and the Times still proudly displays it.

bc3b – ever see the irony of the Pulitzer Prize?

    From Wikipedia. “Yellow Journalism”

The term was coined in the mid-1890s to characterize the sensational journalism that used some yellow ink in the circulation war between Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World and William Randolph Hearst’s New York Journal.
    .
    .
A journalistic prize for excellence in journalism named for an Editor/Owner who “LIED” and sensationalist events to start a war, as well as lie about other events. Seems appropriate to give this prize out to liars for more lies.

    Eph,

Please let them! The IQ of the country will rise 10pts. But they are in for a surprise. What is left of CA will physically look like Israel, a little blue strip with a fat bottom end. The balance of the counties will have joined Jefferson. Moonbeam probably won’t be able to object because the same logic they used on the Feds the Jeffersonions will use on him.

There are bonus points too. When their economy craters we can sweep in buy the place back for 1 BTC, run in like a combination of Territory and theme park. Call it Fantasy Land, charge admission, etc.

Only took 48 hours for Wolff to be completely discredited. That’s impressive.

No one has told CNN. That’s almost all they have been covering this weekend. I don’t watch CNN, but check on what they are covering during commercials.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve wondered why NYC is still above water, what with all the melting glaciers and such.
NewsWeak explains! Waters are not rising, instead the oceans are sinking! Well. OK, then.

Newsweek on Twitter: “All that extra water from melting glaciers has caused the ocean to sink https://t.co/r4ZvE9DAfl https://t.co/hqnuJoyD82

    14,

Geez….. Who is the name of the author, I have some deals on the Golden Gate.

Lets conduct a test…. Why do ice cubes and icebergs float??? They are less dense of course. Water is one of those few substances that expand their volume in the frozen state than in the liquid state. So even if glaciers add more water to the oceans one has to account for the density adjustment. I would be more concerned for the Gulf Stream collapsing than the seas rising.

Good point, DrDog. It’s true that the North Pole is open water so ice/liquid is immaterial. Antarctic ice is on top of land, right? But South Pole ice is expanding not contracting so that’s not gonna advance the theory.
Best to avert eyes and not think about “science as explained by Newsweek”, imo.
