DrDog’s 2nd Rule of Politics
Remember Rule #1 –
No politician gets a ‘Pass’ for another term.
The outcome of the principle is that during a primary there shall be a faux candidate No Confidence. Any candidate for office must exceed the vote tally of No Confidence. Any or all below that tally are eliminated. The practical outcome in most cases will be that the entire slate would be wiped clean as any reasonable applicant would have risen above the bar. Such a rule would likely have prevented a David Duke win for example.
Well here is Rule #2 –
A politician is responsible for all actions in a campaign whether his or others.
This seemingly goes against the ‘innocent till proven guilty’ that is the basis of the US judicial system. But here is a case that I believe a much older proclamation applies –

For the voting public the retort is YES YOU ARE. The politician is responsible for himself, his campaign staff, and other third parties from whose actions they may benefit. And yes I am specifically targeting the McAulife campaign and the Lincoln Project as an example in action. Not that that pair is unique, the dirty tricks have been going on since the founding of The Republic. The problem for the voting public is that it is extremely hard to discern where a campaign is coordinating with a surrogate or not. The simplest solution is to assume in all cases that they are. But, but …
Well lets address the ‘innocent till proven guilty’ aspect. For a politician there would be a simple solution to this:
- Declare at the outset they will reject any third party assistance.
- Actively denounce any untoward actions in their behalf.
- Sue in open court such individuals or organizations that act in their behalf.
The McAulife campaign as of this posting has not made any positions on the whole tiki torch affair. Conveniently the Lincoln Project fell on the sword for him. But that is not the same thing is it? The harder case for rule #2 is it would be highly unlikely for a law to be written let alone enforced. Would probably as effective as the Logan Act. This is a case where one’s ethics as a candidate and those of the voting public come in.
Rule #2 will only come into play when two things occur. A) The public starts demanding candidates take a moral stand in campaigning. B) Candidates who do stand for character start winning wholesale at the voting booth. John Adams said it best –
